hey i'd like to buy an electric but prob is i duno which one to get, i play stuff from rock to metal like metallica a7x etc. i like the heavy distortion sounds on a7x songs, because they sound heavy & thick sounding, & they used duncan pickups. & i realized that metallica's emgs are heavy but on the thin side, if u know wad i mean.

i'd like to know wads e diff in distortion sounds btwn these 2 pickups, & which guitar would suit me? i'd prefer a 24fret w/ FR. thanks alot.

i've been playing guitar for about 3yrs plus, so any specific model in mind? also, wads e diff in sound btwn emgs & duncans?

thx alot Ariedartin, din know COB used EMGs too. so which sounds heavier under distortion? like more heavy chunky sound?

EMGs are active pickups which aren't exactly mainstream, so I expect better quality and less noise.

So whats not mainstream = better quality? For pups, less noise?

Active pups are usually quieter by virtue of their construction, compared to passive pickups,

Better quality? I believe you have read up many an agrument that active pickups have a sterile tone to them, compared to passives?

seymour duncan innovates on existing technology so what you get are basically similar yet very distinct pickups. .

What would you mean by "similiar yet very distinct"?

Children of Bodom?

Alex Laiho uses EMG HZ. A passive EMG pup.

haha, i duno if u'll be shocked if i say this. i just have a classical guitar at home, which i use to play metal/rock stuff for the past 3yrs? haha. so i long for an electric badly.

budget for amp+guitar+distortion pedal arnd slightly more than 1k? i want sth that has a really heavy think sound. thanks.

Get a Roland Cube 30. Bloodsolo selling his for a good price in the SOFT classifieds. You can read up the review on the Cube30 in the SOFT review database.

Get an Ibanez guitar. RG321 for fixed bridge. RG350 for floyd rose. If you are confident, have guitar friends, get 2nd guitars. Don't like the RG shape? Browse thru the SOFT Review database, pick another one.

Take the guitar and amp. Get cables, get strings, get picks.

Go home, play for a while.

You will probably realise you don't need a pedal with the Cube30. So.
Go swap the stock pickups for something else.

There, 300 (Amp) + 500 (RG321) + 200 (pups) = 1k. Misc expenses, cables, wiring pups in, etc etc, maybe another 100.

fyi the a7x guy uses a boss cs3 in conjunction with his bogner amps. no other pedals i think.

a good amp wouldn't fit into your budget so i guess you'll have to depend on a good distortion pedal for the bulk of your tone.

get emgs if you're only going for distorted sounds cause the cleans arent that good. if you intend on playing clean as well, get sds. or the bare knuckle warpig (haha okay kidding).

Roland Cube 30, there's a used on on the forum for $300. Someone mentioned you can buy it new for $315. But thats a good amp.

Guitar, stick to humbucker pickup electrics like Ibanez, SA series. Read the reviews written by subversion lah. $700 can get you a pretty nice guitar.

if you don't have so much budget now, you can stick with the built in distortion on the Roland Cube30.

If you've got a lil bit more, you can check out Boss Metalzone, EH Metal Muff, Line6 Uber Metal.

and i never used any pedal playing trhu my fren's cube 30 amp..

has a metal emulator..heh..crunchy.

Hey I didn't realise you've posted this... hahaha... we is thinkings alikes.

I wouldnt recommend the cube 30.. gain doesnt sounds rite to me...

If this is for training purposes i wonder if u actually need an amp that big.

Go for the pathfinder 15R, recomended by most softies. Then get a metal zone or somethign simmillar, you are then good to go.

with the remaining money, get a decent guitar.

Pathfinder 15R ($175) + Metal zone (around $150) = $325 (a flexible set up)

Remaining money for a guitar = $675 (u ll be able to get various guitar)

Start with a set up like this, and make changes as you see fit and when you know what you need during that time.

However if u are looking for an amp to jam with friends, go for something bigger, maybe a peavey 40watts and above. Look into luthers, shud have some good bargains. Then post it up here and ask for comments.

metallica sounds thin cos of their settings.. nth much wrong with their pickups.. since the whole world knows what emgs they are running... they have their famous scooped mids tone.. if u are thinking the same thing...

im using emgs now... nice on dist channel... cleans are not the chimey ones i feel.. even the emg-60 isnt very good.... but it works la... since u want sth heavy sounding....

I believe the recommendation of the Cube 30 is based on the quality of sound. If you're just after a practice amp and don't have much demands aside from it being able to function as an amp  then a small 15 watt amp would serve you well.

The Cube 30 comes with a 10" speaker, which is larger than the speakers in practice amps. This of course comes with better sound quality, bass, and if you require it for some reason, can be quite loud. For beginners, the onboard effects (chorus/flanger/phaser/tremolo and delay/reverb) are quite adequate if you need to use them, and would probably be a good introduction to the different types of effects.

Similar amps in around the same price range would be the VOX AVT series, or the Marshall Valvestate series. A lot of people don't like the Marshalls modelling amps though.

If you can, hunt around for secondhand items, especially effects. Luthermusic's classifieds, ebay.com.sg and yahoo auctions are all places where you can find a good deal. No point buying a first hand effect if you don't know what tone you're after and subsequently selling it off at a loss.

Guitar-wise, it really depends on your own preference, whether you want a hardtail unit, a vintage trem, a FR-type trem....... Browse around, take some time to read reviews, shortlist a few and go try them out at the music stores. Never buy a guitar until you have tried out all the other ones that you have identified as possible buys. That first guitar might sound good to you but unless you try others you won't be able to rank them in terms of sound and build quality.

hi, with regard to the amp, i'm more of using it as a practice amp at home, but i want a gd quality one, like better suited towards the heavier side.

as for the guitar, i'd like 24fret w/ FR, so any models u ppl recommend besides the rg350?

pedals wise, is metal master gd? or any other heavy distortion pedals?

thanks man. :D
