heres the original 1 from the book by Rick Considine/groove by steve gadd.

Variation.jpg

heres the variation i did...didnt change much...sticking is the same...added accents to emphasise back beats...moved a snare beat up to the hihat to make it into a groove...

right now the bass drum is pretty simple...once you get the hang of it...i guess the bass drum part would be free for improvisation.

cheers! :D

Yup. You got mine right plainsman bro. But I don't know what to use to do drum notations on the computer though

What did you use to write the notations Frummer? Share share ley :D

I did paradiddle and double paradiddle applications and orchestrations. Moving around the kit for solo ideas and also grooves applications strictly based on paradiddle and double paradiddle. An example of the double-paradiddle move will be sumtin like tis: RLRLRR LRLRLL where ur playing all the R moves on the ride, preferably the bell and ur L on the hats, wif the exception of the third L note, which is played on the snare, also, add a kick on the first R note. The feel of tis groove should be of a triplet orientation. Oh ya, did show a demo of the above Gadd's linear 32nd too.

mel bro, try this:

http://2112design.com/

the shareware have some limitations, but shld be no problem to screen cap the towgay and then crop it in photoshop (or
"paint" in accessories) check it out, play around with the software abit... (u can find stuff like ruff/accents/flams in a menu item called 'Special')

there are similar freeware/shareware drum notation software too.... (there's also one http://www.berkleeshares.com/ recommends)

thanks all bros and keep it coming!!!!!!

i did it on Guitar Pro 5 heheh

but i still had to do some photoshopping and stuff.abit ma fan but its alright if its for my fellow drummers!

cool stuff grooves are just so hard to play!!
check out david garibaldi, steve jordan and mike clarke. alot fo linear type paradiddle-esque grooves.

haha... frummer.. nice groove .. thanks for sharing also..

i am at work trying to work out the pattern.. hehe... boss not around

Samba Ostinato - Accenting/Ghosting Single, Reverse, Inward & Delayed Paradiddle Exercises.

Aiyah I just write here ok (the Samba Ostinato using Pariddidle eg Inward reverse etc) for Practice purposes.

(1) Left & Right Foot - Samba Beat (Bass Drum = 1 , +3, +1, +3, +) (Hi-hat = 2 & 4 only)

(2) For the R & L Hands - do this alternating the Accent On The Rims for each Bar - continue till finish all a b c d - then repeat a b c d (notice end of d and beginning of a - is 2 accent on rim shot).

Note Capital Letter is a Rim-Shot-Accent (moving from 1 to e to + and to a)

(a) Rlrr, Lrll, Rlrr, Lrll

(b) rLrr, lRll, rLrr, lRll

(c) rrLr, llRl, rrLr, llRl

(d) rllR, lrrL, rllR, lrrL

Note: - Only the (Bold/Capital Letters) are Accent On Rim - The remaining have to be Ghost (as soft as possible) - Do it slowly first to get the feel, then gain speed as you becomes better.

Point To Note: - If a new drummer cannot do the above perfectly all at the same time (even at a slow rate) - - do this

(1) = Do one thing at a time - The Samba Legs Ostinato - have to be play in the Pocket - meaning you don't think about it - it's been done naturally by your legs - this need practice...remember one thing at a time.

(2) Then when the Samba Ostinato is fluent (or is in your pocket by then) - Do the Paraddidles. Same thing Practice and do (a) first, then (b), then (c) then (d) - you have all the time in this world - then finally mix them up playing all (a to d) -

If you entirely do not know accenting rim/ghosting Techniques: -

Don't accent on rims for this exercises (if you are not used to it) - then do the pariddile using accent on rims later (bros here can teach) - This is not as easy as it seems - Rim Shot/Accenting & ghosting need proper control to make it sound good - so if you are starting out to learn Rim shor accenting and Ghosting you will have to always look at Stick-Height between your snare & sticks - A tighter grip is necessary in doing this - last 3 fingers must control the rebound - if accent were to sound good and even - - - - Speed is the last thing to acquire - Getting the sound right is 1st Priority here....and I am still learning this lar ?......

bro,

just adding on to the already enriching stuff you have described above, i noticed similar sticking patterns for (a), (c) and (d) but not (b)

see below.. i've highlighted RLRR in yellow , and LRLL in red

sticking_similarities.gif

i don't have time now to look at it longer (taking 5 from work) but it does seem we have not exhausted all possible permutations.

as such, it also depends on what the exercise is used for, we may not necessary need to discover all possibilities in order to reap the benefits (what do we want to achieve from above exercise? independence? stick control?)

.... u know me la... i always 'break down' one....

cheers

Hahahah good question Bro - My Sifu got tbis from some Berklee Drum Books - He ask me to practice like that - This is one out of 20 to 30 over patterns for these Brazilian Samba Patterns Morph from don't know what pattern.....

I think it's just a practice to develop some control for Paraddidle patterns & accenting techniques....Useful or not har this kind of practice - Aiyah it's just some Basic Drumming Stuffs I guess lah..Kekekeke .

don't know what you are saying (too chim for me lah - permutations )- I only know - the accenting move from 1 to e to + to a - but instead of using ...Single 16th Note Stroke for accenting the 1eta alternating it (he taught me before last time) - he now ask me to practice accenting this way using paraddidles.

Accenting/Ghosting is damn tough the way I see it - The 16th Note Single(RLRL) Accenting Type - I already find it tough -somemore he taught me also that I can sometimes - double up all the un-accented or ghost notes and only play single for/on the accented notes - Wah low Basic already so blady chai-lat for me....Drumming is tough man.

PS: - Next time you teach me slowly slowy the "ANGRY FUSION" stuffs hor?...thks

the alfie - the permutations are just an accent control for u to get ur dynamics in order.
can i suggest something?
just do 2 permutations, then move on to singles, dlbs and triplets, and reverse paradidles. ur main goal to to gain independence of ur hands from the samba feet pattern. the accent ex is great but u need to free up ur hands more. what u cld do is use those accent on ur permutations and play single, dlb etc etc......its alot of work i know.

after u are comfortable with there's alot more things to do to get the samba

yeah blurred bro, was throwing ideas at the same time asking qns about what the objective of the exercise was.

i was sharing with bros at the meet-up that at times we make an exercise too busy and lose track of what we want to achieve.

i'd prefer to simplify (not too simple of course *judgement call here*) many exercises and focus on one thing at a time first.

aside to RD bro,

i told u that day liao, that exercise not simple.... its advanced!!!

it also depends on the person of course.

i think its good if eventually you reach the point you are comfortable with the exercise, can play it out properly and use it to improve you drumming.

otherwise, keep isolating and try pinpoint the problem (ie. why cannot play it properly?). once you have exhausted all options, u might want to try another kind of exercise...

blurred bro made a good call.... try feet samba ostinato with just single strokes or double strokes on hands first. must stable ah, then move on.

cheers!!!

Blurr

You mean 1st I have to learn to these accent using only eg 2 of 16th note type Permutation(like 1st - accent on 1 then accent on the eg 2e (this means 2 permutation) - - Then I pracice these kind of Accenting/Ghosting exercises focusing on these 16th Note Singles.....Once I am affluent with this....then I practice adding in those Doubles to the ghost notes- ..Is that what you are suggesting here?

Plainsman: Single Stroke and double stroke on hands with Samba Beat I have no problem (without using accenting) - its my 1st exercise....but my legs on Bass Drum & Hats cannot do extremely fast fast lah...

Anyway thk u all so much - at least I know what to practice now liao...

PS; - Tell you all har - May we go Drum Clinic correct - June Drum Meetup - I show you "Angry Samba" then you know !

Need Advice Here also: Sorry to side track here -

Bros Now I a little bit lost here - you know..last time I've a lot of time to practice each night on my Strokes (I practice 3 hours each nights on Rudiments for 3 months or so liao)......besides Tuesday (where I go and jam with my Blue's Band - 6.30 to 10pm without fail each week for 3 months now)....

Lately I also jam with 2 group of Jazz Band - which need me to go and Jam with them 3 times a week and I've been doing this for 3 weeks liao.....This leave me with only 1 to 2 days to do practice on Rudiments.....

The blues Band is purely blues - they don't play anything else - so I do alot of Shuffles. The Jazz Band I do alot of Swing, Bossa, Ballads and some Funk - still training me to get the feel - but I cannot do Trade 8 (I can lah but - I am lousy on this) and I have to read their Music Notes (not my drum notes) to know which bar they are in - they insist I do that cause if they tell me "Now lets do Trade ??? - and if I don't know which bar they are in - we'll be out".

I really have less time now to do self practice eg Rudiments/Groove etc due to Jamming (which I am learning how to work with other Musician)...but will this affect my drumming or - it will actually make me a better drummer as I learn to drum, lock in with bassist and Rythmn section to make Music tight which also means keeping time is of crucial importance to me here ...not been Flashy?(anyway I can't be Flashy but I would love to if I could - I work closely with my Bassists, learn to fill-up empty space when they want me to most of the time....learn how to start and end a song, when got singer my playing style change play more softly, ride cymbals when lead play...aiyah learn all these but nothing relating to my drumming.

My Blues Band is not so tokerant on me - I must not make a single mistake (so I have little chance to explore and use many types of Rudiments) to apply and learn from mistakes but the Jazz Band is good - they allow me, encourage me to try, explore (make mistake nevermind) but try applying....overall 3 weeks in the Jazz Band ...both Jazz Band is much tighter than my blues band.....the blues band read Chords only...the Jazz Band reads Notes...blues band talk " Intro, Verse, Bridge/Chorus " Jazz Band use terms "A B C" but are all very Musically inclined.

Oh and yes - every Friday Night that is today - we must go to Jazz Club and listen, watch other people play....I really have less time for practice?

But the above JAMMING is what my Instructor wants me to do - he always encourage and push me to play with bands (even only after 3 months of lesson with him) - he say it's a must and keep on encouraging me...he says: - no point learning, learning learning at classroom - but at end of day cannot play with other Musician...true? - - - - but I am a beginner only - still many things I don't know in drumming.

A little stressful too - as I have to prepare the songs for each week where Band Leaders e-mail me songs in MP3 Format (many I've not heard before) each week prepare 7 to 8 songs....so I listen on my way to work, at my workplace (I have speakers), at home if I have the time...so I know what to do in the Jam.

No chance to learn to use and play double bassdrum - cause the songs not like that one.

hey RD, okie if u can do the singles and dlbs with the samba ostinato cool. the accent ex will definitely help. what i do when reading a chart is tht i listen for the changes, normally u can hear them. like on the score there will be like say a Gmi7 to a Ami7, u can hear it when it switches unless ur git player or worse bass misses it.
wat u can do is prac to a jazz tune, play 4 bars of time then 4 bars of solo, this will help u internalise the 4 bar phrase. alvin recommended tht i do this and screw me it helps sooo much.

bro blurred

I am starting my 1st lesson with Alvin next week (sign up 6 months lessons). - yeah I ask him to teach me Jazz & Rudiments...and thks  I am so happy
