madmonkeykungfu - good for the local scene or not?

the number of times i read your posts were just enough for me to dismiss the thought that u were just another attention seeking miscreant....

I definitely get what all u say but i dont think u get what u said urself....

Let me give u an analogy....u gave teh example of how even the movie goer is a critic...true...but he need not be a good one...ah there u go....
"oh no nudity in the movie..man this movie sucks"

"man i had no clue what was going on"

"oh man the hero died in the ending, what a crappy story"

heard those before??...need nto mean the movies are bad....

Imagine Steve Vai releases a song.....who do u think he gets feedback from??there are millions who talk about his songs on forums but do u think he hears all that...no tahts for our benefit...but im sure he does get feedback from the sound engineers, his band, his producers, his mentors...his g3 buddies..all amply qualified...whether they like his songs or not...

In our case the maximum level is the forum...or equivalent...we dont really have fancy producers to criticise....if there are any...amazing..please inform all of us of your views.....but if you dont know....keep quiet...sure u can comment on fi u liked the song in general....ya nice tune..blah blah...man the song got repetitive...but according to your guidelines...we should tell the noobs about how their solos suck...and how theri rhythms are off as compared to all the pros out there...nope...dun work that way....do u get what im saying?

honestly i didnt have an easy time understanding your posts until a few re-reads.

you keep mentioning Mr. Vai, and your previous posts mentioned "qualified" people like his sound engineers, bandmates, g3, etc... BUT who are the ones who BUY his albums? The fans who are the consumers.

feedback from the public is important to a musician who hopes to earn a living through his music.

It is the musician's own choice whether to take heed from the feedback or not.

If the solos do sucked in your opinion, what would be your intent if you tell the musician it is good? To slow down his growth?
Seriously if interpreting my signature as that way makes you more comfortable with yourself, by all means go ahead.

mmkf: sometimes when pple built a strong defence wall, no matter how well and clear u explain, they will nv understand.

B.p: You mention "How many times has a classical guitarist come and said oh that metal piece isjust noise or that jazz piece seems out of key!!"

Yes , no two doubt that sentence holds.

BUT, then again. It is up to the musician to decide whether this peice of comment is worth his time or not. If it is not, he will probably brush it aside n take it in his stride.

I have seen far too many musicians and their fans out there, who undoubtetly built strong defences and they cant take critics.

Seriously, IMO (eg)if i were to tell richard clayderman hey u sux at piano, i doubt he`ll even try defending himself.

i guess in my interpretation , mmkf is jus trying to say that pple should be open to opinions. Even if an unconstrutive remarks arises, it is still an opinion. Everyone have their rights to their opinions. The reflection of a person morals albeit his opinions, that is another story.

After reading the whole thread, i just feel what originally point being discuss is being so wrongly interpreted by many. Not taking sides with mmkf, but throughtout this whole thread, pple have misunderstood his point literally. or worse, misinterpret it and arrow it back.

This whole thing about, only pple with "standard" can judge n criticize is sooo elitist.

A slight Digression
Say iam a chicken rice seller, if i give up just because i keep hearing pple say my chicken rice sux then its no one else fault but my own. Passion is very important which i c a lot of musicians are lacking. If u got the passion in something u do, a few mere construtive/un-contr criticisims is nt going to bring u down.

hehe yea it kinda got repetitive but atleast i had somethign to do from work....both mmkf and lombardo....elate on my points with ease...but i still maintain....that those great players are different from a noob getting out his first own composition..u treat it with the same vigour and criticism...you risk killing a future musician....sometimes after long periods of playing we tend to forget how it was when westarted out.....U and I might be able to take criticism...but the next guy who signs on might not....secondly i doubt richard clayderman would be listening to you...but people here will be...and lastly.....mmkf thanks but no thanks.....I dont need your signature to do anythign for me...I am very comfortable in my own skin thank u very much...

VAIYEN: HELL YEA VAI OWNS......

Peacelove and good happiness and stuff

James obviously does not have as excellent a command of the English language as you guys.

I don't understand the pride and pseudo elitist style of posting such things.

so shall we go offtopic and discuss vai?? :D ..ps i think his nottingham cocnert vids are up on google...

:) No... lets not stray... Vai isn't very appreciated here. ;)

Btw, this concert vid is up? :) Nice!

hehe I guess after a point we all just sheep following an example...so well...Stillwater and MMKF...sure u can go ahead and do what u do best....but if i ever decide that i can judge someones work I will answer it in my own way....whether i decide to be the carebear or play the devils advocate is after all a matter of personal choice.....but I would urge you to use your fervour in the the right way and not just follow your objectives faithfully.....

As for Vai,what the???how the??? ppl dun appreciate Vai here??what the?? how the??the man is god himself...but i did hear that yngwie is more popular....

Yeap, you guys can go ahead and work on what has to be done. No hard feelings I hope btw.

As for the Vai thing? Its true. :)

Vai's music is hard to get in to , in the first place, he composes for himself and he has been constantly pushing the limits. His releases have a varied theme through out.

Malmsteen is... well... simple stuff that is what the people want.

Its always the case here... you shred a thousand notes, its ... WOW. You be experimental, tweak the more subtle parts of music, nay, its noise. Its just like so. :D

hehe its a forum man...i dont judge people by their online identities...so no hard feelings at all ....

As for Vai,I do believe malmsteen was caught on record once saying that Vais playing is not melodic or something like that....well it doesnt really matter to me...I have loved hsi playing for the last 7 years....the first album i got of his was the Ultra Zone when i was but a wee kid...hehe i loved it..but then i got passion and warfare....and i really fell in love with his playing then..hehe am searching for his mystery archives vol.3...hmv has it for 45+...hehe cant afford that....

indeedly. No hard feelings.

Malmsteen was caught on record. :) But to each his own lah. Thats the thing about music.

The Jewel Set is what you are talking abt aye? The whole thing has been complied already... very collector's I would say. :)

Ooo..the ULTRA ZONE. Vai's "grown up" album to many. And many missed the wildness of P&W.

How's Reflections for you?

shredcow, thanks for helping me to re-iterate my point on ppl who has a poor sense of understanding... so i would make an exception and respond this time...

well, i dunno about you, but personally, I think James is fine. its YOU who got problem understanding simple things, jump into conclusions, put words into ppl's mouth, twist stories, and even facing identity crisis...

try learning from James, he's a rational person, not talking on behalf of him  cheers

Alrighty Stillwater. ;) I'll do as you say...

This has dragged over from the MDC thread. Don't understand your jumping to conclusions point, but I'll say that you don't word things properly.

Anyhow, in all seriousness, this is just a forum, so yeah. Chill.

yea it was originally in the jewel box set but then it was re released by producers as an actual record....and so was the elusive light and sound...both are 45+ at hmv man:(....I so want to get them:D....heehee

Ya man i love malmsteens original songs...rising force...the solo gets me mad.....he is legendarybut i think vais true class and even satrianis showed at the g3 in denver....similarly i think petrucci did a great job to keep up with them at tokyo.....

I definitely think ultrazone is the kind of album vai wont release again..he was just so in his own zone at that point....it was unbelievable what he did with simple melodies and ofcourse tht octave divider.....i do believe he used that new scale..for the first time in the ultrazone..xydian or summin..where he split the octave into 14 notes....but ofcourse in my country that was done ages ago....

As for reflections...i think that vai released this album for the fans....his work is exemplary but for the first time we get an inside view into his mind....which i have wanted for so long...the website just rocks....but i dont think lotus feet is the best song in the album i like km-pee-du-wee..and freak show excess...probably cos i have heard another version of lotus feet by another artist.....john mclaughlin with the greatest musicians of my country-zakir hussain and hariprasad chaurasia...their version of lotus feet makes me cry....but i loved reflections but i would not put it in his top 3 works.....my fav is passion and warfare followed by alive in an ultra world and then alien love secrets..i guess i am old school haha....

Hmmm... whats the damage if you order overseas?

Hehe... Frank on ULTRA ZONE is great stuff!

I just cannot grasp how Vai evokes so much passion and emotion in his playing when playing with hi gain (hi compression) and a ton of processing. Its stunning.

Freak Show Excess is killer on Reflections... :) Whats the time signature? 13/8? There's a vid on youtube about how Vai worked out Freak Show Excess.... sweet stuff!

Yeap, reflections is truely a peek into Vai's mind now...

Stillwater...I just think personal attacks are uncalled for :D after all we all belong to the same community of musicians...to argue about ideals is one thing...but personal vendettas are another....this is not in reference to shredcow but just a general statement... :D no harm intended....and i apologise in advance if i said somethign that bothered(s) you... :P cheers buddy
