Live 'n Loaded - upcoming Ch 5 programme showcasing local music LIVE!

Asphalt, excellent point. I think the reason why the Arctic Monkeys managed to garner a huge fanbase before being signed, is (1) huge number of UK live music venues - you can tour endlessly within the UK, Scotland and Ireland alone. In London itself there are probably over 30 prominent original live music venues with a roster of touring bands playing each night; and (2) crazy music press where MM and NME et al are basically the bibles of indie cool and trendspotting. they will be lightning fast to pick and champion a young band, or crush them the very next instant. The monkeys happened to strike the right note with the critics.

Also there's an actual carrot - every band knows they have a realistic shot at a prize which is fame, or at the very least making a living out of music.

More opportunities = more bands = more competition = when the cream rises, you really might get some amazing stuff. Not that I think the Monkeys were one of them though :-P

Yup - here and anywhere - it's all profit driven by the industry. It's just that here, as you rightly said, it's perceived that there's no truck here from which to drive it.

Anyway, I hope this program pushes the envelope, gets more people into local music and inspires the kids. Television is a really important artery in the body of the media - if i can make a suggestion i really hope the powers that be there will be less traditional and conservative where filming and mixing techniques are concerned, and let a rock band sound like a rock band!! Good luck and fingers crossed!

i'm sure Shyathian wld make a great interviewee too

So who are the CURRENT local acts (be it a solo singer or band) that is a good representation of today's music in Singapore?

Why not we make the recommendations to mediacorp before they decide to line up hady, taufik, fendi, by def and dick lee for the show???

i found their email:
promo5@mediacorp.com.sg

Let's send the list to them and get the bands who deserve this exposure on TV.

nothing wrong with them, but they're not exactly the kind of people who need more local airtime

That's probably true, but you and I both know that Channel 5 will most likely have them on the show anyway. Lol. Hopefully, this doesn't turn into yet another S-Pop Hurray.

Ok, for hady taufik etc etc (the outcome of many a tv reality competitions), i recognize and acknowledge that they are performers, talents and recording artistes, no doubt, and they make up this local music scene, one way or another.

But like what has been mentioned earlier by another fellow Softie, they already have so much tv exposure, so why let them take that opportunity away from someone else to showcase their talents?

If this tv show is about showcasing local talents, there are SO MANY out there, seriously. Give them a chance, and then let the tv viewers realize what they have not been exposed to beyond that 4 walls of mediacorp-produced talent competitions.

Impiety is established and local...so can ah...we see them on tv soon?

prom night again

What a shame that it looks like it's got a sort-of-talent show format... complete with a popularity contest element (the bit where people vote). This format is a godsend for TV producers as it requires minimnal research, is a tried-and-tested format, and if there's phone voting: phew some revenue is there.

It looks like we have another Prom night scenario.
But that's not a problem since most people seem to get very excited about their Proms. American Idol proves that.
But I missed my Prom night to make music with friends. Never regretted it.

Maybe the Talent Show element is only one portion of the show. It would be nice to have a show where producers find and present the talent themselves. This would involve research and passion and actually attending shows. I am sure there are idealistic folk at TV stations who do have the enthusiasm, knowledge and nous required. They may even be on this thread. Power to them.

The "talent show/search" segment is only a part of the show.

I know that Episode 2 & 3 (end Jan, beginning Feb) will feature Wake Me Up Music artists
Episode 2 has A Vacant Affair and Vertical Rush
Episode 3 will have Plainsunset and March Twelve.

I'm expecting to see the other big names like Electrico, Jack and Rai, GSE etc. all putting in appearances at some point as well

To say that they have done minimal research would be to harsh on them. Like what Someone said, bands like Electrico, Plainsunset will be gracing the stage and as such, there must have been efforts to find out who are the influential bands locally, and who are the "in" bands nowadays and efforts to contact and liaise with these bands for the scheduling.

But I can also understand if you were to level this opinion towards the voting part of the show. I guess when you can sign up and vote for a band 10 times a day, there would be nothing to stop a person to vote 10 times every day and get 10 more friends to do so. Power to them if they can get friends to do so. At the end of the day, the program producers decide their objectives of the show, whether they want to put out a band, regardless what they play, their experience, their perceived quality of music etc, to give them a chance to fulfil their dreams and opporunities to play on TV and hopefully catch a eye of fancy here and there

or they would want to do some simple filtering of the quality of music before they put out the band so as to present the best of the local scene: established and those up and coming.

Nothing wrong with both, it just depends on the what they want to achieve with the show and maybe on that, LIVEANDLOADED could well be more clear on what they want to achieve. If they want to present the best of the local scenes, then they had to do some filtering other than depending on voting. If their objective is to give a chance for any band to fulfil their dreams, then the voting is fine.

Cheers!

or can u guys have a special late nite or online section where all the experimental guys can hawk their wares hahaha

Nirvana... You're absolutely right when you say:
>To say that they have done minimal research would be to harsh on them.

I agree with you. It is harsh. And apparently true. And that's why I didn't say it.

I did day that the 'talent show format is a godsend for TV producers as it requires minimnal research...' and I was referring to that kind of television in general - be it idol shows, models, best pets... whatever. This was a run-up to my idealistic and tentative sigh of relief that maybe Live 'n Loaded won't get bogged down with this aspect.

I wasn't going to say anything regarding researchers for Live 'n Loaded in particular because someone let people on SOFT know about Live 'n Loaded first, so surely that suggests its intentions are good.

And time to buy 4D since that someone in TV not only knows who Humpback Oak and Oddfellows are - but have mooted having them on the show.

And let's not forget bands that don't need to reform because they're still going! OP were live and loud on SBC5 back in early '90s playing on a show with a quiz bit on it too. No reason why they can't be seen again I hope.

Power to Live n' Loaded.

PS. What *was* that show? Was it Pyramid Game (precursor to Live on Five?). One of the prizes was a hairdryer....

PPS. how did i stumble on this? i came here looking for something w/ a maple-neck and a whammy bar and a pick-up selector option i can get my head around haha

Some of the Live n' Loaded crew were at Rock The Sub (months and months ago) to meet the local bands playing there, way before any news of the show hit the air.

Have some faith, and don't be so quick to judge.

Alright, cheers for clarifying what you were trying to say. To be honest, I also feel that the voting part is back to the "who got more friends" win format which of course to a certain aspect disregards the music that is being played.

Hey, I am not that young too (in my early 30s) and I listen alot during the BIGO magazine time to people like Livonia, Sherene's Closet, Stompin Ground, Lilac Saints etc... getting these people back for the show would be such a great draw to show that local scene goes way back (esp if they can get bands like Tokyo Square etc back) and not just a scene that suddenly appeared from nowhere, that we have history and not just a fad.

Great to see there is some form of discussion going on about Live 'n' Loaded. I'm sure the majority of you went "Wtf, not another talent voting show", etc when the TV trailers went out.

It's not a talent competition like you would see in American Idol, or god knows the other kind of mutated reality competition shows there are on TV. The "online voting" element came about only because we wanted to let the viewers/netizens have the say in which NEW TALENT they would want to see perform on TV, alongside others like GSE, Electrico, Plain Sunset, AVA, Vertical Rush, MarchTwelve, Jack & Rai, Muon, Force Vomit, B-Quartet, I Am David Sparkle, etc etc etc (just to give you guys a lil' heads up on who is scheduled to appear in Series ONE. Yeah, I'm hoping for another season, hopefully). And there's strictly no $$$$ SMS revenue involved for this one.

And the "online voting" has its pros and cons of course, and that's why we set out to limit 10 votes per day on an IP address. That said, yes of course, you can manipulate your own band's chance of appearing on TV by getting 100 of your friends to go online and vote every day. So you can say, yeah, at the end of the day, the shittiest band might appear on TV. BUT i am sure that the majority of the music community here would have a better sense of judgement than 100 friends of Band XXXX. *fingers crossed*

So yes, in the midst of content creation, we needed to have a segment whereby we give YOU the choice & judgement on discovering new local talents, rather than a panel of 4 "musically inclined professionals" doing the talking and selection on TV while you sit on your couch flicking us the bird.

However, let's not forget that the above only makes up PART of the 1 hour show. The other segments of the show sets out to feature the already-known bands and music talents like those I've mentioned above. Of course, the "reunion idea" came about, but after we approached a few acts, found out that it's kinda hard to get things together. Amongst the groups we had in mind were Tokyo Square, Stray Dogs, Corporate Toil, Zircon Lounge. Of course, the greats like Stomping Ground, Etc, OP, Ossuary, Concave Scream, etc are still very much active in the scene. We're looking into them!

Don't worry about the programme "misrepresenting" the scene here, we are really out there, at the gigs, at the clubs, at the studios, talking to people, etc etc. The only thing we're concerned is that the first series of 10 episodes is definitely NOT enough to showcase all the fantastic music talents we have here.

So I thank all the talents who have signed up on the Live 'n' Loaded website, our intended target is to have at least 200 music talents upload their stuff on the website by mid Jan 2009.

Our programme goes live on 27th Jan 2009 (Tuesday) at 8.30pm, so I hope all of you would either come to the studio to watch it, or catch it at home.
