Lets Talk About Using "Different" Pedal Arrangemen

I think its high time. I think its good to share. I think people could benefit. I think its going to be a cool thread!

Okay... here's the beef. Or cheese.

We all know the "standard" pedal arrangments:

Guitar --> Wah --> Distortion --> Delay --> amp

Stuff like that... pretty straight forward.

But what this thread deals with is... running things "different"!

"Different" because its not really different, just seldom done.

Sometimes, we just want that different sound to inspire us, to make us move our butts & hands, to play that magic solo or compose that magical piece.

So.

I'll go first....

1) Dirt pedal --> Envelope Filters / Auto Wahs
You can get pseudo duck-quacks with ease but the magic comes when using dirt pedals that are octavers, ring modulators, starved fuzz, etc etc...

E.g. Octave Down Synths / Octavia / Fuzz Factory / etc etc

You get WEIRD... and its very cool...

Usable?
Definately.

Useable thru-out a song?
I think the audience will kill you.

2) Envelope Filters / Auto Wah / clean-ish Wah --> medium-heavy Chorus
The effect is like a volume swell that has a dreamy sweep - just moving like a wave... The effect is more apparent with the 1st 2 pedals... with wah, not so.

But... using a wah before an envelope filter will allow you to control when the envelope closes/clamps down, so you can control the sweep...

Usable?
MOST DEFINATELY

Useable thru-out a song?
Sure, but its difficult to be consistent with the sweep of the envelope filter.

3) Octave down --> Octave up
Hahaha... yes.. you will get an octave down, original signal and octave up. Hehehe... this one is very cool.

Usable?
MOST DEFINATELY

Useable thru-out a song?
No lah... the octave up kills little animals slowly but surely.

4) Delay --> Delay --> Delay --> Delay --> Delay
This one is actually common but yet not so common... People usually only have 1 delay pedal in their rig... but really, this one MUST TRY!!!

Its beautiful. I shall say no further.

Usable?
MOST DEFINATELY (a Brian May clinic vid on youtube shows it in use, and U2's Edge does it all the time, and many more)

Useable thru-out a song?
YES!

Okay, ur turn... contribute... give some wild ideas... my ideas are very docile.

Do state it clearly ah... and describe ur sound a little. Oh, and report back, those of you who found something useful!!!!

Aiyah... its not chim lah... some of these things I only found out when reading... its as simple as shifting pedals around but well, never got to it... :P

Amp -> Effects -> Guitar

LET YOUR GUITAR SINGS!!!!

Usable?
ABSOLUTELY STUPID!

Erm sorry...

I can only +1 with those Delay chains. Stacking Delays is FUN!!!!!!

I just tried this today...

Guitar -> Delay -> Talkbox
Guitar -> PS5 -> Talkbox

I actually messed up the connection, forgot that I need to connect the talkbox right after my guitar, without going through anything first. But I liked the how the delay went into the talkbox.

I later switched the delay with a PS5 8)

Didn't really think it's "uncommon" la, but just sounded really new to me.

Boss CH1 -> Gain pedal -> Delay -> Same Boss CH1 -> Amp.

Yes, CH1 twice. plug the input jack that's supposed to be for your guitar into the 2nd output jack of the same CH1.

Then bend down, turn all the pedals on, have fun turning knobs on the CH1/Delay to create weird sounds. You might have to turn up/down the volume (be careful when turning up).

heh, this one nice thread. The below are some of the thing i like to do and mainly with just guitar and effect.

1) weird sound: Feedback looper

put any modulation pedal within, delay, phaser, flanger, reverb etc, put wah and volume pedal in last chain. Wah to provide filtering, adding texture and frequency sweep(no "shaft" wahing or blues wahing allow). Volume pedal last in chain to control the sudden loud burst which often can scare your cat, blow your amp or disturb neighbour making out.

The last volume pedal can sometime be substitube with compressor, if knowing how the various pedal will interact within feedback looper plus all the manual tweaking of knobs.

to blend the above noise into normal playing, insert the feedback looper into the loop of a blend pedal(goosonique one is da ONE for me), anytime when needed, blend in the noise as background sound.

this clip is just pure feedback looping making sound using line6 fm4, dl4 and some other stuff which i cant remember now..

2) Usage of goosonique blend pedal with a looper(looping devices, eg DL4, boss rc series etc) n the loop of the blend pedal.
Any other pedals be outside the loop as and when need, can be activated and looped into the looper.

Usage for me usually for looping some ambient droning sound as back ground, once ready, with the blend pedal, will have instant overdub sound over the droning.

3) reverb-->delay-->reverb-->delay

First reverb in line is set to 100% wet, killing all attack and allow the note to come out slowly, follow by going into the delay for extension of the sound thru repeats, afterwish, going into another reverb set to 50% wet, this one is to lengthen the whole sound. Last going into delay, it will be for even longer sustain, ala ebow. In all, its my way of getting an old synth kinda attack decay sustain release(adsr) envelope function..

As for setting, heh, that one you gotta figure out your self. What i can say is that i uses digitech as the first reverb(100% wet), 1st delay is DL4, 2nd reverb is line6 verbzilla, 2nd delay is akai headrush.

To provide more texture to the above sound, add any chorus, flanger, phaser, sample and hold effect/seeker effect or any arpeggiator effect after or before it To tame it from getting loud, a compressor at the end is what i used some time.

Eg of the sound can be heard here. Main instrument is guitar and effect pedals. No synth or keyboard was used.

4) Using delay oscillation as background and tune close to normal guitar sound or as wind effect..

Clip was done with mood delay, catalinbread semaphore, line 6 verbzilla on octoverb setting. Overdub and into this

5) This one just gotten back into doing it more indepth. Its mainly with moog pedals, voltage controlled and modular patching kind and stuff. It has lotsa sound, but i am just barely scratching the surface. Clip was done with the pedals below and guitar, some oscillation, manual tweaking and good ole anarog sample and hold sound for guitar..

if the clip sucks, its because of me doing a bad job, nothing to do with the pedals. Dont chop me :lol:

wah(left on) -> ds1 turned full (tone and gain) -> delay-> delay-> chorus->chorus -> phaser----

pretty interesting sound.

haha.

Gossey always makes me smile if not luff my head off falling off my seat...

Ah! Nice one MOo! B4 anything else, try plugging in the pedals the reverse way. For starters try that with a wah pedal..... shhhh now u noe!
:lol:
