i think the keyboard is a very versatile instrument, and whether or not it sounds cheesy really depends on the musician and the gear. unlike other instruments, IMHO the quality of the sound patch affects the overall feel to it. but i've always envisioned a bunch of keyboardists making up the different instruments in a band, perhaps with an extra keyboardist to fill in parts and do more complicated passages.

but you're right iansoh, it depends on ur influences.

i believe in emulating other instruments in a band, it makes us better keyboardists.

well. i think its possible to have an all keyboard band. my project band had SOMETHING like that in mind and it worked out quite well for us by getting into semi finals of asian beat. =D

basically my band (P.O.H) is made up of
me playing effects through reasons by using trigger finger, abit of decoration notes on my synth and playing turntables
1 keyboardist playing lead lines through reasons
1 keyboardist playing bass lines through ableton live
1 rapper
1 vocalist
and we decided to use a live drummer because there would be more impact

we play mainly hiphop so maybe thats why its easier to emulate certain sounds (and cause we all know hiphop is rather sequenced). other genres are definitely possible as long as the arrangement is planned properly. actually i dont really think its necessary to emulate certain sounds produced in certain songs. why not use your own sounds and add in your own feels? who knows it might just make the entire song sound much better.

just my 2 cents. =D
