Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay..

Metalhead1993

Based on your generally useless and unproductive posts on this forum in general, I have developed a hate for you. Does that mean you deserve to die? Think before you speak, kid.

It's hard to believe the band who wrote "Yellow" stealing a melody from someone else. The question is, is there a need to?

Well, i'm both a Coldplay fan, and a Satriani fellower (as in, i'm a guitarist).

I gotta say Satch is becoming more "pop" in his tunes. Take "Super Colossal" for example, the main melody is nothing more than a descending minor pentatonic scale, played over some simple rhythmn on timing. When I first heard "Super Colossal", it really sounded like a practice lick to me... There goes my hero...

For this case, imo, it's purely coincidence.

Well, if Satch kept his standard like "Satch Boogie", it will be very very difficult for someone deny copying and claiming coincidence...

Anyway, "Viva La Vida" really sounds like a typical Coldplay song.

Heh yeah, was making the point that just because you dislike something for ambiguous reasons they shouldn't deserve to die.

I really think the song was typically coldplay. I love the song 'If I Could Fly' by Joe Satriani too but it was only a common phrase between coldplay's vocals in the verse and a small part of the massive following guitar solo in Joe Sat's song.

The youtube mashup only shows the best part when combined. Listen to both songs and you might actually think Joe Satriani is exaggerating a little with this lawsuit.

hey mockingbird thanks for sharing the vid, it was an interesting watch.
even though i hardly understand what he aws saying (i suck at theory lol), it was enlightening (:

damn. after seeing this im really at a loss who copied who.

its like some "so and so copy who and who" copyright triangle. Lol!

Hey, no probs dude. Basically what he was trying to say was, the chord progression used in Coldplay's song was similar to Joe Satriani's, with the exception of just the first chord.

Either way, if one were to play both songs using their respective chord progressions, the melody will appear to sound the same.

:)

And oh wow, now another artist has a similar tune.

Sorry to Satch's fans, great guitarist he is, and loads of respect for his works, but i think what he did is totally stupid.

Picture this. I go and write a song with the chords: Am,Dm,G,C... And it gets popular. And then one day, i get a call saying Axl Rose want to sue me, cos i'm "plagiarising" his song, "Don't Cry." Get my drift?

What i'm trying to say is, there are millions of bands and/or musicians out there. And someone else having the same chord progression, melody or tune as yours is INEVITABLE. For sure, at least one more band in this world has the same chords, tunes or melody as Satriani's song.

well im not a guitar expert, especially in theory, but i don't think the "Don't Cry" analogy works very well in this case cose Am, Dm, G and C are simple open chords and anyone, (including me) could write a song like that.
unless i were to play the chords exactly like Slash did, (ie, the same picking, rhythm and tempo), then i can stand proud with those 4 chords because i didn't play it like slash.

The descendants of Johann Pachelbel could have made millions by suing hundreds of musicians around the world for ripping his canon in d progression.
