JBJ - True Singaporean & Statesman Passed Away

Seems like the part it mentioned that "he sought all means to demolish the PAP" and the system of government, and highlighting then PM Goh's help to the two sons to "establish" themselves is causing a real uproar among bloggers and netizens.

PM's Lee's language is rather disturbing. One would think that a man of his education and stature would show more sensitivity in the way he phrased his sentences.

growlingsoulpup, I think the PM is just being honest.

empihsrow, how is the letter stupid?

i wouldn't call it stupid. i just find it extremely, how should i put it... his family effectively ran Mr. JBJ down to the ground, down to the utter ground, by, hmmm, means which i cannot quite place here. and was that necessary?

bulk of the letter was then used to say how magnanimous they are. well, i would say that they were terribly magnanimous, how terribly magnanimous, how terribly, terribly, magnanimous.

Someone wrote an analysis on the 'condolence letter'. Follow Link from http://theonlinecitizen.com/

Personally, I feel that JBJ has successfully altered the course of Singapore's Political system quite a fair bit. The one thing that cannot be taken away from him is that he bit the bullet and stayed on fighting... unlike a few other wounded soldiers in this lopsided political battlefield such as Tang Liang Hong and Francis Seow (to name a few) who fled this island state (understandably due to compeling circumstances). JBJ stayed on, fought on and passed away determined and convinced that the political climate in Singapore will one day see enlightenment, despite knowing that he may not be around to witness the day. He has planted a seed of hope in the middle of a field so barren but continued to water it daily despite having to fetch water in canisters from a source many kilometers away. In my opinion, he lived by the call of a Singaporean Singapore where the spirit of "regardless of race, language or religion; to build a democratic society; based on justice and equality" was laid as his cornerstones.

Even if the contents of the letter were "true", though in my opinion they were just what he thought of him, you know, being the opposition and all.
Anyway, even if. What kind of person finds it necessary to point out all the flaws or mistakes someone made when they die? The fact that he passed it off as a "condolence" letter probably makes it even more ridiculous.

Let's be clear about how the government works.

There is a bus, a bus driver and some passengers.

The weather is bad and the road is kinda bumpy.

The bus driver struggles to drive safely.

After some time, one of the wheels starts behaving differently from the other 3 wheels for some reason nobody knows. It moves in the opposite direction and causes the bus to sway.

JBJ fought a long fight. Let's just give him the peace and remember him as a Singapore political figure.

Ok, I don't wish to see this thread become political sparring since we are here to pay our condolence.

Mr. Soft, yes, won't be political sparring here, at least not on my part.

the matter here is the PM's so called 'condolence' letter. have you read the 'analysis' linked from theonlinecitizen? what do you think?

daryl, I would rather everyone to remember the good things that JBJ has done. So, let use this thread to highlight his achievements.

interesting bus story ... err... who'se driving the bus by the way?

I'll refrain from my other posiblly endless wisecracks in this thread.

What the bus driver will try to do is 'fix' the wheel, as is their favourite term :)

God bless JBJ. Fought a good fight - didn't always agree with his approaches at times, but his heart and hard work was always in the right place :)

well one or two wheels ok lah but if all four wheels the bus driver mite have to spend too much time mah thinking how to fix them

Good try James... but I seriously disagree on the analogy used to clarify 'how the government works'. There are at least two levels of History to read. First - Rulings Class Narratives and Second - the People's Narrative. What use is a bus that has a driver with little concern of the destination desired by the passengers. To the point that when some passengers voice their concerns, they are dragged out from their seats and pushed to the door to be kicked out of the moving bus. Try reading Singapore's history from both perspectives beginning 1988 and work backwards to 1963. Perhaps, we can better appreciate what JBJ was fighting for.

In anycase, I agree that sincere condolences should remain priority at this stage. I feel, the best eulogy for him is one culled and inspired from JBJ's own dreams. JBJ has brought up two fine sons and I am sure PM's letter is most intelligible to JBJ's own prodigies. I am sure they have read the messages that are obvious as well as those embedded.

I don't see many people complaining about the government, or how great JBJ was.
I'm not, I don't know shit about politics.
I'm just a normal person who fails to see how that is a condolence letter.

And I really think you need to allow more discussion on these forums, since it's you know, a forum. I truly appreciate all the time and effort you put into this, but you need to allow people to express their views. I feel your approach is much like the governments, "You can say anything you want, absolutely anything! Except this that this that this that."
