J_m_S' New OD and Dirt pedal talk!

hurhur pedal friendly amps that i tried.

spider II
the ss randall forgot the model.

Laney VC series.
actually most tube amps are pretty pedal friendly. But the more affordable ones would be those 2 imo.

so pathein how many points do i score?

darn, 50 marks = 50 points to hit at 'O' lvl standard and 100 at 'A' lvl standard!

anyway, i would like to see someone answer this question, keen to know the answer too.

Methinks pedal friendly amplifiers take boosties and overdrivies without farting, buzzing or dying but instead makes sweet sweet lov... i mean tones.

Take me for an example. just a couple of months back, while practising with my band at TIET Studios down at Keong Saik, I happend to just bring along a my trusty ts9 thats all. no delay, no modulation, and plugged into the fender twin reverb blackface RI.

Bro nickyseow bro, how's the blackface RI? Can give FR? Up your points in advance.

Btw, what's ur band? We are starting our dodgy gyg organysyng shennygans again next year. You know my standard procedure: Demo, bio and tech rider. Just send to us. Then, it'd be details in PM!!!

fwa! where to begin! I'd like to tell you to go google it yourself, but im not so bad eh.. gotta share the rove where the twin reverb is concerned! Anyway, down to the FR! I didnt experiment with the vibrato channel, cos I was rather blown away by the clean channel already.. As you know, its a 6L6s into 12ax7s 85 watt amp.. you'd expect some level of seriously warm tone.. ok. the amp is sort of elevated on this kind of rack if im not mistaken so what im hearing isnt really like directly in front of the speakers? but like at an inclined level?.. well, at a flat eq ( Treble 5, Mid 6 Bass 8), slightly bassier levels, my tone was very punchy, not compressor squishy-punchy, but the punchy where it the treble does not cut so sharp with the bridge pups on my tele. i switched to the middle position, and I could hear veins of franz ferdinand, new wave clean riffing kinda tone.

Then the ts9 was kicked in to goose the tone. whoa. my eyes literally lit up, as my bassist told me as he laughed at how ridiculous i looked. Hey, zen moment la deyy.. I set my ts9 at Gain at 10:30, Tone at 4 o clock, and level dimed, much like the way you'd use it at a low gain way, to achieve the tone say from a vox ac30 that kind of slightly overdriven tone, just a very slight grit added to your clean tone? Upon adding some more gain( 2:00), it was like hearing just the tone thru ts9 in a whole new way, a way that i'd been looking for, for a damn long time.. The OD sounded very smooth to my ears, lesser hair than thru my main amp at home (Fender Deluxe 900 with the "Dark" setting).. From then on, I was a happy man.

Thats my FR bro AgingYouth Bro. For the other question... Details in PM!!

Wah.. my exams over liao. then got structured questions..

Pedal friendly amps, this means they have to take pedas well.

For example, when a overdrive pedal is played through it, what you hear must be the sound of the overdrive and guitar.. Not altered by the amp(if this is possible).

Basically, it must be an amp that pedals can sound best through...

And gerald.. Dont you think what you said is a little harsh on him? I really tried to restrain myself but i have to type this..

How can you ask him to quit the instrument??
In other words, you are asking him to deprive himself of the joy of learning music.. I hope your remarks do not hurt him in anyway. But i seriously think you should rethink what you said and apologize to him. And another thing, haven't you wanted alot of pedals before?

Does it make him any different? Also, no offence here but i think most of us would have gone through a stage when we wanted alot of pedals..

Actually I don't think that's what most of us are looking for. The amp circuitry is actually very similar to a pedal one if you look at it. The preamp in the amp is sort of like an overdrive or boost pedal with much higher headroom. And the last circuit in the chain always imparts the most characteristics to the tone (try a fuzz into a ts, then a ts into a fuzz and you'll know what I mean).

What I usually look for is one with a preamp that can take the pedals without going bonkers. I've seen amps that fart, buzz, or plain cutoff the sound when certain pedals are put through them.

If you'd like to hear your pedals without any other tone alterations, you can put them through your flat eq hifi, or into a PA system. Most people will hate how they sound. (Of course not including the modelling effects)
