J_m_S' New OD and Dirt pedal talk!

so jms.

go to your guitar now. and start playing and playing.
practice on things you cant do, example tapping, sweeping.

personal story,
when i 1st started playing few years back, i had no rig at all..
all i had was my 2cents SX guitar and a SX amp. i only had the drive on the sx amp to give me dirt sounds.
at that time it seemed godlike for me. and all i did was practice and practice for hours each day.

so james its not about the pedal nor the sound. its about the quality of the player.

trust me if lets say a guitarist comes up on stage with the most shitiest tone ever but he plays like vai people wont label him as lousy but rather unique.

do yourself justice jms.

Yeah. gibbytones has a real good point.

Practise and become Singapore's Very Own Steve Vai!

then launch your own signature series and remember to give one to me!

I wanted to post this afternoon, but seems like many people have responded what I thought.

In any case, I'll put it this way - it's simply useless to get a gain pedal that works with every single amp, player and style - because it doesn't exist. You might find a certain pedal to sound superb on a small practice amp, only to find that it farts out on bigger amps.

That's the reason, if you really want to spend money, get the basics right first. The technique, then the guitar, then the amp.

And then, the effects. :D

seriously, you sound like you're stabbing in the dark repeatedly. suggest that you get a podxt, not the live one, cos u wont wanna be always bending over to tweak then bending back up, and then going down again once u figure that the current setting is not for you. get the podxt, spend a year on it going through all the cabs, heads, effects until you know them inside out. after that, then you may want to ask for people for opinions on *LESSER* pedals. the list u gave on pg1 is like.. crazy.

That's right. Personally I think there's no such thing as best overdrive/distortion pedal that suits every guitarist in the world. The most u can say is, the pedal is more versatile, or better at clear chord tones, or higher gain, more unique etc etc.

Everybody has a different preference. That's why the forum in harmony central is full of different opinions, and different pedal makers are still surviving despite the tough competition.

Maybe u can try to test it out, or listen to the demo clips. And decide which is closer to what u want. Sometimes, u may want more than one sound, and thus more than one pedal may appeal to u. And preferences can change over time as well

Have fun!

hehe, dear j_m_s, havent kena scared away i hope. Other than what the rest have said, thought i just add in some, in my most humblest opinion :D

if you got the money to get all the gear, by all means to go get it. And once you got the gear, play the hell of out it, making music, making noise or simply use the pedal as a paper weight is fine also. Let yourself define what the pedal/equipment can do for you, make it your tool and let it work for you in whichever way your want it, no how toher people use it or how the advertisement want the consumer to use it.

No comparison with other pedal, no asking of views from others how it work or how to make it sound good. Let yourself take over and find your own definition. It doesnt matter whether the playing skill is good or proficient enough to own it. As long you have the mean to get it, thats what it matters.

Another thing is checking out of the various effect forums, harmony central, gear page forum. There are too many things to read and learn in there. After the read and learn, its not about believing what others have said, but to get the gear and confirmed/over rule what you have read and come up with your own idea of how the equipment is.

heh, practise can come later, tweaking of gear come first and see how it can give you your own sound to practise and write your own music.

imho

Well i read dat Miaudio TZ turn u off coz of da chrome finish. well dat shud not be ur concern at all. I juz got da last piece of TZ frm G77 n its rockin my socks. Its is truely versatile as how it was intended. Read Subby review n go try it but u hav 2 wait 4 G77 2 restock it. It may have 6 knobs but all u have 2 do is juz turn da knobs n experiment n mostly it sound great at any setting. but it gets pretty loud n also noisy. but heck i love it. Get wat dat will make u wanna pick up da guitar n rock on (within ur budget dat is). Im like more eager 2 get hm n start rockin now more den eva.. 8)

fwa.. this is gonna turn out like the jrak vs robopimp thread down at hcfx that has reached like what? 61 pages last count? OMGWTFBBQ? (i just had to do that).. my name was mentioned so its time to respond likewise! lol.

Anyway, some useful advice has been dished out to you dear j_m_s.. so i suggest you re think your approach to guitar and the appropriate gear.. anyway.. since you're almost quite set where dirt is concerned, why not channel your finances into acquiring a pedal friendly amp? If you do a search down at the gear page, there were numerous threads(VERY helpful imho) that helped guitarist narrow down an amp that is really pedal friendly.. if you dun wanna go beyond that, you could speak to malcolm or daniel or any of the gurus like edder who loves dumble amps and klons, and im sure they'e share their views on narrowing down your choice where it comes to an amp.. hmm seriously? a fender frontman? dude.. just work at upgrading your amp, and you'd find that perhaps you will not need that many pedals.

Take me for an example. just a couple of months back, while practising with my band at TIET Studios down at Keong Saik, I happend to just bring along a my trusty ts9 thats all. no delay, no modulation, and plugged into the fender twin reverb blackface RI. All I can say is.. HOT DAMN. I trully found what I was looking for in terms of clean tone and low-mid gain when I kicked in my ts9. For me, that was trully a zen moment. Never did I expect just a single pedal to sound so good through a tube amp.. I tried ts9 into marshall triple lead with my tele down at Alvaron. gross.. not my piece of cake, YMMV.. Thus I've made it my big goal now to save up to get myself a Fender Twin Reverb prolly 2nd hand off evilbay and do the relevant maintenance..

Thus what Im suggesting to you is to really work on your chops in the mean time, even with your current amp, cos hey, you're not even near 18, you really have your whole life ahead of you! So chill.. but then again if you are a gear measurbator, then thats a whole different story all together.. Cos trends, with big regard as to FX pedals, are really really transient. If you back tracked on TGP, you saw the trend shift from the "Wow! OCD! I gotta have one!" to "Wow! Crunchbox! I gotta have one!" to "Wow! Timmy! I gotta have one!" to "Wow! Eternity! I gotta have one!" so on and so forth.. you really have to follow bro pathein bro's advice and go with your heart, and make the best of whatever purchase. Remember, no one can tell you what a pedal is supposed to sound like best like your own ears.

Many wishes to your future endeavours.

Funny how we would say, "Oh Satch can live with a DS1, so why can't you?" I find it odd that we have to follow other guitarists or use them as a "rule of thumb", though i suppose its cost efficient?
FYI, Satch did mention all he needed was his MODIFIED MIJ DS1, a DD3 and his JSX clean channel, and he can play. Its not just a ds1, Satch declined to talk abt what mods were performed on his MIJ DS1.

I subscribe to Pathein's philosopy of, get what you want after researching, and make it your own. But dude, you NEVER really know until you buy and try. You just got to get down to it, purchase, spend, try. Its just how it is...

If getting gear inspires you to play, go for it! When I got the Danelectro French Toast, it made me play in a different manner. When I got the Fuzz Factory, I composed something different. Etc etc. Gear CAN inspire. Gear CAN make you sound better. Its just how you handle it in your hands.

The over emphasis on techniques is simply put, YMMV. Nothing more. Its just as open ended as every damn guitar principle out there. Ugh.

Frankly, what ever anyone else uses should matter little to you, unless you intend to cover their tunes or sound like them - be a clone.

All this emo talk about gear and shit has gotten me all confused. The whole idea of training and playing better... I tot like what bro edder bro has said before:

A guitar is a signal generator...

But what do I know?

Bro nickyseow bro, how's the blackface RI? Can give FR? Up your points in advance.

Btw, what's ur band? We are starting our dodgy gyg organysyng shennygans again next year. You know my standard procedure: Demo, bio and tech rider. Just send to us. Then, it'd be details in PM!!!

Who did u buy it from?

haha. Agreed. the jnh is a fabulous pedal.. dunno why shredcow hates it.. lol

Give the kid a break man.. he's so young.. i mean.. he's so young, its very easy for him to buy stuff on impulse.. so..

Since now, we are on the topic on amps(partially at least) then recommend him amps that are pedal friendly!

And everyone is advising him to get an amp. me too.

Get a good amp.. tweak all ur effects on it and you will be able to get your fav sound..

use lousy amp.. the sound on the amp and other amps will differ greatly..

SO.. GET A GOOD AMP!!!!
