Is Theory important for a Kickass MetalGuitarist?

Interesting... do you know this for a fact?

Dude... don't start...

But then again, I've never met a theory-powered guitarist who was stuck in any box. If anything, they seem to be more liberated than most other musicians like me... :D and I did theory. Just returned everything to the teacher... :P

I think you need theory for writing tabs and riffs, especially solos and all... But maybe those 'tau gays' are not so necessary... I play mostly by ear!

nah. i wrote melodies/tabs/riffs/tunes without "learning" any "theory".

it's the same as math. i mean u can learn and study all u want..but there's a certain feel in math too, and sometimes it just works because you know how to work it. ok sorry it's a recursive thing

Actually its the same way with me. Guitar tablatures are quite different from those notes so yeah, we gotta learn tablature since its more important than those notes and taugays.

Actually it is theory - guitar theory!

Haha we can do anything we want, we can claim we can play without theory, yet when you learnt the fingering and played your very first C chord.....that was still theory.....Ironic isn't it?

That's the thing..theories can be acquired, can be embedded, can be gradually adapted to. It's not a necessity to study theory to work it, as long as the gist has been practically put into use.

Theory helps you express yourself at times. Like say if you're gonna write lead riffs and stuff, you might wanna use scales and you gotta know stuff like root notes and matching the notes with the rhythm guitar so that it sounds right. Knowing scales also gives you an advantage cos you can use notes from the scale and you can also add notes of your own to get the expression you want. . . Overall, i think your ears and your creativity is most important. If it sounds good and it's original, then yea. . . It's good. . .

popeye......... "..............and a leg to kick ass" baaaahaa

im a newbie but i think imho, basic theory is still needed. let say u compose something nice, how are you gonna record it? using tape recorder? what if not clear enough?
then when passing it to someone quite tone deaf, its gonna take long to figure what note it is. through experience, my exp may differ.

and oh i need a good place to learn my theory. anyone knows where? any music school recommended? baaaaaaaahaaaaaaaa
