Is Theory important for a Kickass MetalGuitarist?

and now comes the question. which came first the music or the theory= x

But honestly theory is essential. feelings are even more important though. but sometimes having too much feelings but no theory is like having a car w/o patrol.

good to look at but cannot move..

well... i should say music come first before theory. theory are impremented so that musician can record or pend down those music and past it on to the next genertion...

Just like religion, Jesus come first then the Bible. Just like how our 1st human being learn to speak. they realize that in order to let the languages pass on forever it had to be written down, after that then many many years later grammer and vocab are imprementated by people who feels that the old outdated penned languages by their forefathers needs to be improvise.

same as money and accountant... basically anythin that need to be pen or recorded down and pass on will need a basic form of references so here comes the theory.

got it?

tab vs sheet music eh? depends on the person. For me i started out with tabs then learnt sheet music. so tabs would be easier. although sheet music does give you variety

i'm a "play by ear" guitarist with no music background
pros n cons if u ask me,

i managed to "tab" quite a few of my fav songs and play them by my own way (of cos, the bottomline is, i have to make sure it sounds like the original, nevermind the improvisation part yet, hehe)

by constantly listening and playing along, matching the speed as well as the notes , tryin to get the right chords and stuff and of cos the solo parts

started out "tabbing by listening" with really simple songs, like those from oasis, nirvana etc then to beyond
then to oldies like smoke on the water, hotel california, let it be, etc then to harder and faster
(think Xjapan songs, ozzy's crazy train, guns n roses songs..

but i stil do go look the tabs after i managed to get some direction from "playing by listening" just to make sure i m in the right direction.

but after years of "leisure paced" guitar playing, just for the fun of it
i've progressed to the next stage where i hit a stumbling block
yes i do need theory if i want to improve my playing...

besides theory, picking techniques, tapping(something new to me, my first ele guitar jus bought recently) learning all the terms n how to do stuff with the guitar. and of cos music theory...

after watching some vids of malmsteen's guitar playing, and understanding what goes on behind it, i realised theory really is important, but of course, i'll stil carry on playing by ear....cos tats where the fun is for me, the challenge of playing exactly the same ,without reading tabs hehehe

Dude i think you should learn and recognise the basic shredding patterns first, then you can modify and create your own solos. Hard though to figure out yourselves HAHA but can be done. Learn shredding first. You Tube has many shredding lesson videos about it. Cheers. Rock n Roll dude

i used to learn from tabs when i started and i found out that it's really useless.

tabs won't enhance your guitar skills or playing.

if you want to learn music, imo... either go to a guitar teacher or learn thru listening and theory.

just because you can play other people song doesn't mean you are a good guitarist. still it's my opinion,

but nowadays, i've been playing using chords and my own scales research and compose my own riffs. cause i realise one thing, in the end...it's how good your song is...it's not the technical.

Its no surprise, the best songs are usually made up with the simplest manner.

Look at the "House of the Rising Sun - The Animals". One of the most simplest and yet best songs i've heard and yet...the arpeggios are really damn nice.

Theory is important. Without theory, how can you be practical?

just my 2 cents.

forgot to add one more thing,

when i studied under my guitar teacher, he's an excellent guitarist...(which i stopped due to part time study and work)..

he said to me one thing.

"It doesn't matter how many chords you know, it's how you know to use it".
You may know a million chords but if you don know how to use it whats the use. The thing is you must only need to know a few and improvise it.

That sentence really made me realise and changed my playing. It seems music is NOT about TECHNICALITY. or how good/fast you can shred or whatever, it's about the tone and melody and even better singing the song together cause it does entices the soul.

Tabs won't lead you anywhere...have you seen guitar teachers/guitar gods using tabs ???

Music sheet is beneficial and good to use cause got timing and proper lyrics to follow with the song.

Theory is seriously important. I mean seriously.

i think ya missed out e most essential thing dude...

"Aural aka listening"... perfect pitch n relative pitch... n not to forget creativity or vision... i think wif all of em comes e ability to hear somethin in ur mind n straight-away play it on ur guitar wif watever f**kin insane creativity or techniques which may contribute to e 'feel' etc...

its kinda hardwerk to obtain n be able to apply em...unless ur a maybelline (already born wif it)...hehehe...damn lucky few...but i guess its possible to obtain a good pair of ears...if tone-deaf then i cant say a thing...hehhehe \m/

frodonet:i agree on "tabs won't lead you to anywhere".its only useful for covering eh?

but there's also people out there.no idea abou theory.but can compose good stuff.like kurt cobain and billy corgan

the first thing i don understand why we always assume that good composers/guitarist have no theoritical knowledge on music?

how do we know that? WE DON KNOW.

It's just that we are not that good ourself that when we self taught, we have the impression by cheating ourself, that good guitarists also have no good theory background.

the real thing is, all good musicians whether guitarist or not have good sense of theory.

I think that rock music is an intuitive style of music. Whatever that sounds good to your ears, you play it.

I think that there is more to music theory than just playing scales. Scales are more like the fundamental basics of guitar playing. Music theory would be something like rhythm, harmony, melody structure, etc. Correct me if I am wrong.

Why doesn't anyone get it?

Its always the beautiful balance of things that nabs the best of both worlds.

What's with the extremes?

well i guess theory is a stepping stone to understanding, especially if you arent a natural genius in music, ears and stuff. i think the main problem is that most pp get struck inside the theory box and unable to get out of it.
