Introspective: How do you play your guitars?

Ok... I got bitten by the Pathein bug recently. Started thinking about how I approach my guitars. Lets discuss.

1. When you play your guitars, do you consciously play them in a certain way? Do you play a strat like a bluesman, an LP like a rocker and a shred machine like a shredder? or do you play all these guitars the same way?

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you?

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals?

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person?

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?

Just 5 to begin with. Will add more if any.

1. i play mostly the same songs, regardless of whichever guitar i pickup. So, i suppose my answer is NO.

2. Weight, Action, Fret size, and trem (floating vs fixed) does affect my playing. So some stuff I can do easier (not necessarily better) like on my Ibanez than my Fender..

3. I use (and own) only 1 set of gears. So No.

4. one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person.. whatever that means :D

5. I like the shape of superstrats. I love the sound of LPs. I enjoy the feeling of Fenders.. Can't decide :D

So I guess my answer to all this is, the guitar doesn't personify me.

Interesting questions! Let me get the ball rolling
1. I Play all at the same way. That's why end up I'm stuck with Les Paul and only les paul. It requires me a quite a bit of time everytime I changed guitar type. Normally if I changed, I will change my entire collections. I'm very much influenced by zakk wylde and slash although I'm a big fan of Paul Gilbert. So I'm constantly GASing for a PGM but I know i won't be able to play it well while keeping my les pauls at the same time. So decided not to buy :'(

2. Definitely differently. I tend to move more when I carry a strat, I guess because it's much lighter than LP. Superstrat makes me play faster and less melodic. To me strat is the most comfy but I love the tone of an LP. I guess PRS is the best solution for me but I haven't get the chance to own it at the moment.

3. I play whatever I think it's nice

4. I'm a one guitar for all kind of guy but when I realize that the guitar isn't suitable for certain songs that's when I got the GAS attack. Hahaha

4. Definitely a Gibson Les Paul. I believe it suit my style the most both musically and dressing

SG, SG and more SG!
Why only 3 options liao? Second fav after SG is tele..

1. When you play your guitars, do you consciously play them in a certain way? Do you play a strat like a bluesman, an LP like a rocker and a shred machine like a shredder? or do you play all these guitars the same way?
I play every instrument the same way.. I have a tendency to make a single coiled strat sound like my humbucking gibby simply because of the way I play..

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you?
Well.. See how lah.. I do intend to try out more metal riffs with an Ibanez or Jackson.. But more often than not I will go back to my endless bluesy doodling..

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals?
Certainly.. I sometimes get the conception that Fender amps simply suit single coil guitars more, and certain fuzzes and ODs are for single coils only.. Trying to break out of that mentality..

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person?
If I do, I'd be playing AC/DC, AC/DC and more AC/DC.. But like they say, master one AC/DC song and you've mastered all of em.. Lol.. So must expand lah..

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?
I'm a cross between a Strat and LP, hence the SG!

ahhh, whitey, you have been helpful! You scratch my back then, i scratch yours this time round

i play like wankers who havent been getting laid or even having own jerking off time in a piaking long while. In recent years, i play geetar only when i remeber so. Style of playing is of mimimal concern, my interest would be able to conceive a piece of random melody with at least 8 trks of overdubbed sounds/rhythm spanning 10mins and below, everytime, if i remember to play

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently

playing geetar is too limiting. When i have a nice melody, i think of what are the others sound/instrument that will fit in, to form a context, a composition, a music and a mood that make people wanna make out. Playing geetar, thinking about geetar, only geetar, is holding us back

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar?

to quote myself in the strings gauge thread,

i so rock that my gear will abide by how i want it to sound like. If it refused to sound like what i want. The gear is useless.

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person

My friend tell me less is more, i beat the crap outta him, coz he, is infidel! I believe in less is more(true), but for my piak sake, ninamah eh MORE, IS STILL MORE!!!
Yeah!!! More,is still more and anyone who has at least primary school education will tell you, less can never be more!!!

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?

seriously, i, defined the geetar. The geetar is useless, empty, hollow, souless, nameless, without me. If iam a slut on geetar, the geetar will be my b.i.t.c.h, if iam a unstoppable gangbanging machine, the geetar will be my anabel chong, if iam the mind that dictate direction, thent the geetar better jolly well follow.

In order to break thru the boundary of geetaring, demolish that respect of the geetar, abused it, distort it in our approach towards it and make it works, whatever we want it. Even if the geetar ended up as a sex toy(literally) so be it.

it is this "respect" that i feel, holding us back.

threading between being sober and state of unconsciousness. I pardon myself

yes, depending on the pickups, humbuckers i'll end up playing led zep, ac/dc and maybe even metal. on single coils, mostly blues, blackmore and hendrix.

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you?
i feel different when i play a les paul. they feel more solid and i really feel like i'm playing something. as for strat, tele or any other guitar, they just dont have necks quite fat enough for my liking. especially the ibanez wizard necks. but when i play the strat, somehow i do tend to feel like i'm ritchie blackmore. HAHAH

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals?
i play what i think is nice, i concentrate more on playing then what gear goes with what gear

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person?
HAHHA i dont know what "Da Tian Xia" means cos i failed my chi B. but no, i can play songs played on single coils with humbuckers, vice versa. but i do feel wierd like, when playing metal on an acoustic.

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?
Les paul. i'm a jimmy page fan. my style of playing is greatly influenced by him.

1. When you play your guitars, do you consciously play them in a certain way? Do you play a strat like a bluesman, an LP like a rocker and a shred machine like a shredder? or do you play all these guitars the same way?
I only have one electric, it's a fatstrat, so it has a tremolo (which I hardtailed), one humbucker and two singlecoils, and 22 frets because I don't really need 24 frets. I use it to play everything from rock to metal to blues and shredding. As for my acoustics, one sounds more vintage-oriented, and the other more contemporary, but I play the same stuff on both. Just that for acoustic blues, or pure acoustic songs, I'd choose my vintage-sounding one.

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you?
For acoustics, since I have two, they're really quite different. My Ibanez Sage is a higher-end guitar as compared to the Samick, so as expected it has a clearer, better tone, sustain and volume. So I tend to play slightly softer on it as compared to the Samick. I almost never play the Samick now, though. Its 8 years old and has done its duty.

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals?
I like to try a lot of stuff, especially when it comes to amplifiers and pedals, but I generally stick to solid-state amplifiers, hardtail bridges and humbuckers because I can't seem to click with singlecoils. I also prefer analog pedals because they simply sound better and are more reliable.

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person?
I like to play different stuff on the same guitar, so since I play rock, metal, blues, instrumental, shred, etc, I'd choose a guitar that doesn't look out of place doing the stuff.

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?
I like all three, but perhaps of the three the LP suits me best. But the best fit would be the SG!

1. When you play your guitars, do you consciously play them in a certain way? Do you play a strat like a bluesman, an LP like a rocker and a shred machine like a shredder? or do you play all these guitars the same way?
All guitars the same way. I never play LPs though. :D Hate them. STRATS! (though I don't own one because I don't like their look) are the ultimate shred machine

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you?
Jacksons just give me the ass-kicking feel. Will never get that with a guitar that looks like a sushi(LP)

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals?
I play what I think is nice of course, heck care what everyone else says.

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person?
I have 2 guitars, but I don't really care whether my guitar suits the song or not, I MAKE the songs suit my guitar, whether the original artist likes it or not, that's his problem

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?
none of these really, hate the LP, in every way, love the strat/superstrat's playability, hate their looks. Love the Jackson warrior in every way, personifies my approach to dealing with everything.

*refering to before hydrofly reply and earlier*

heh, this thread can be more in depth and we are already funny people, playing geetar. Dont let me, poke more fun at geetarers, being geetares, in typical geetar forums..

Right. My turn:

1. When you play your guitars, do you consciously play them in a certain way? Do you play a strat like a bluesman, an LP like a rocker and a shred machine like a shredder? or do you play all these guitars the same way?
- I play all these guitars differently. Regardless of songs. A strat seems to sound more fluid if played in a loose jangly manner (think SRV) utilising chords. An LP seems to sound better played tight (think Slash, Peter Green). A shredder machine seems to require more precision than others (think John Petrucci, Michael Romeo).

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you? - Yes. The thought process is different. Raking a strat is not the same as raking the others. Raking seems to sound best on single coils, at low gain. To me, a strat needs to be played big. More abuse. I don't know how to explain it. I would tend to think of the strat more like a chordal approach. The LP requires a lot more sustain and legato, and more focus on making each note count, taking advantage of the excellent sustain of each note. Less abuse, and more care in making sure each note is clear, and long. A Shredding machine needs to be abused differently from a strat, but abused nevertheless. More like the whammy bar, the tapping, and playing with the effects of high gain.

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals? - Yes. All the gear I buy has a specific purpose. One type of setup is meant for one type of guitar only. And yes, a Fender Twin REverb sounds best with a Fender Stratocaster.

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person? - Yes, I choose guitars for certain songs. November Rain played with a Strat is just wrong. Little Wing played with a Les Paul is even more sacriledge. For The Love Of God played with anything else other than a 24 fret, floyd equipped shredder is plain silly. Thank God for GAS.

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP? - Strat. For sure. Basically, bolt-on, 22 frets, SSS or SSH configuration. I'm not a shredder, though an LP is a nice difference. But no, the strat is me. Thank you, Leo Fender and Eddie Travares.

1. When you play your guitars, do you consciously play them in a certain way? Do you play a strat like a bluesman, an LP like a rocker and a shred machine like a shredder? or do you play all these guitars the same way?
No - i use whatever guitar for whatever gig

2. How do you feel when playing these guitars? Do you think differently? react differently? What are examples that show that these guitars are different or the same to you?
Nope - as above

3. Are you focusing your gear around a certain type of guitar? For example, a Fender Twin Reverb would ONLY sound good with a single coil to you? Or do you just play what you think is nice, and heck care the amp and pedals?
I gig with any amp and or guitar (including axes that dont belong to me) but my effects must be my ME 30

4. Do you play certain songs mainly because you have the right guitar for those songs? or are you a one guitar "Da Tian Xia" kind of person?
No - one axe fits all songs

5. Which of these 3 kinds of guitars describes you as a player? In the sense, which of these 3 types of guitars personifies you as a player? Superstrat, Strat, LP?
Strats & superstrats

1. lespaul man i am, my first bought and only electric guitar i own so far. i try every new thing i learn on it. plus most of fav guitarists are using les pauls, so there. i used a strat type during jamming before though.

1. Nope. I play the way they're supposed to be played, musically.

2. I used to have 2 RGs (recently sold one, the other's my cousin's), would say I prefer my own RG more. Firstly cos its my own, secondly cos of the neck width (feeling), I would say mine fits into my hand perfectly. I would say anything that beckons to you... PICK ME UP AND FREAKING PLAY!!! is good enough.

3. Matching amp to guitar is like an art. You can say that Mesa Boogies are meant for shredders or metal heads, but I think that as long as they sound good, who cares?

4. I am broke, so yeah, one guitar DA TIAN XIA!!!

5. SuperStrat >> Turning to >> LP
