Internet Radio on SOFT

i like the positive vibe here...shoutcast is not hard to pick up...i picked up the basics in 2 hrs reading user forums....rite now i can handle abt 10-12 listeners at one ago wif the server on my pc, which is not a prob rite now coz i dun do much publicity....i play a mix of brit, north american and singaporean "indie" wif at least a third of my playlist being local music.

i wouldn't advice streaming at a high bitrate...i currently stream at 48kbps 44.100khz which is pretty decent....i am not sure abt local server providers for internet radio streaming but basically it all goes back to singnet and their customer service is CRAP. American and British server providers cost about S$1.50/S$2 per user slots for 48kbps. So to serve 100 listeners, u do the math...so yea, its a good idea to start small and see how that goes from there....

but hey, its all a good idea and i'm willing to lend any help...

Hmm James I think we should come up with a list of possible providers and weigh the pros and cons with cost before making a decision. Audiorealm is a good consideration, but the server is in US if I am not mistaken. The data has to be streamed to US and back to our local listeners, which is redundant. Our individual connections to overseas is not as fast as our connections to local servers. Since our target is the local community I think we should take a look at local possibilities first. Can your web server take it, James?

my webserver cannot afford more bandwidth. ha.ha... else i will 'die until very ugly' coz every month i already over the limit. haiz..

the connection to US should be ok.

also, we should target 'international' audience. hee..he...

you got suggestions for streaming providers?

Ouch. Oh dear. :? Actually internet radio can be a good source of revenue at it's mature stages you know.

Anyway, it would be nice to form an alliance with all the local independant sites and bodies and pool resources. We should treat this as a community project, rather than a business opportunity.

If US servers are cheaper, then I guess it is ok. If they are more expensive, not worth it. International audiences can come at a later stage la. That's not the priority right?

As for providers, I have actually lost touch with these things for some time, I gave up geeking to play guitar  I just talked to and old friend of mine and he gave me this site http://www.sgwebhostingtalk.com/ , see what info you can sift from it?

Stream solutions costs $27 a month for a 20 listener 64kbps icecast server. That's cheaper than my handphone bill

you have my full suport as long as it does not involve advertising for profit making organisations

if these profit making organisations can help to fund our radio?

baby-steps dear...what we need to do is to set up a small scale broadcast and slowly promote it, expanding the number of slots as listenership increases....only then will advertisers listen to us. i suggest we start small. we can talk of being 'big' and 'advertising' for profit-makers when we are up and running.

Yes that is the idea, I believe James was worried that you are against advertising for profit making organisations in all forms, even in the future, and he was just interested to know why. :)

okies..so with this, shall we start something?

anyone interested in working on this please email james and we shall meet and thrash out the preliminaries...we're looking for committed people who have a good knowledge of radio production and internet streaming..

ok, let's meet this friday evening? have a bite while we talk about Internet Radio.

James , i got an idea , how about

phase 1 :

small scale , 2 - 3 hours daily like from 8-11pm (peak internet usage time)
- softies rotate on monthly/ weekly of streaming of music ?

if phase 1 proves popular , you could extend phase one to phase 2 with full 12 hr broadcasts on weekends ?

is there any such plan that allows for flexible usage such as this ? 24/7 seems outta the question.

perhaps if this idea take off can ask one of those bands taking part in school of rock and other established local bands e.g electrico , observatry , ugly in the morning , straydogs to play their music online ? then tip off the media to cover it to raise profile ?

maybe can tie up with school of rock finalists / they get airtime , the plan gets publicity ?

pop up = bad idea man!! ppl these day have set up pop up blocker no point having a pop up thingy where eveything will be block..
