I cannot believe the hogwash...

Janie Hendrix said:
“When I was a kid I remember Jimi had all these different guitars, and I said, How many different guitars do you have, and he said, 100! He asked me which one was my favourite and I said, The one that looks like an arrow, the Flying V. And he kinda’ whispers and winks at me and says, Yeah that’s one of my favourites too.

*puke*

There are articles and quotes by other family members to say that Janie Hendrix, the step-sister of Jimi, didn't even know Jimi at all. Sure, this could be bitter family bickering, but I cannot help but believe that the above quote is nothing except marketing bullshit on her part.

I think theres no big deal here, its just like Roger Mayer and his fuzz pedals that he custom built for Hendrix while he was alive. After his death, every Tom Dick and Harry proclaimed that their version of that stompbox is the accurate tonal replica of the Hendrix sound.

True, but Roger Mayer is still alive, and he's still making it, but he's got every right to do so, since he WAS the original. The rest are a matter of licensing fees and royalties. No real ties.

This one, is claiming to be "Authentic" Hendrix! It comes from the foundation! Not Jimi himself.

Erm yes, its just his estate milking his name for all its glory, I remember a while back, the JH estate came up with Jimi Hendrix Vodka too. JH is a brand name, and that's what companies do when you have a popular brand name in your portfolio. No Big deal there. Dead Celebrities rake in lots of Moolah, I don't see it as a crime. At least for this case its a guitar, not some sneakers or something.

And judging from the divided replies so far, it seems like its all a matter of personal opinion.

First, no disrespect to loving fans of musical entities, but we should use our common sense and financial micro-planning to discern what is crap coming out of brilliant marketing/product position, and decent products with 'milking' marketing.

The Hendrix estate has been torn by in-laws wanting a piece of a multi-million dollar legacy. Who rightly has control of the Jimi Hendrix name? So by selling it to Gibson, it just means money for the family members, and not in a way that promotes any good vibes of Hendrix.

You want Dimebag Darrell's cousin's sons and uncle's daughters to start cranking Peavey designed Razorbacks or Cort sunburst Vs with Estate of Dimebag endorsement? Maybe a Behringer Dimebag Wah.

No.

Things has to be done tastefully, in honour & decent respect of the entity that started it, and if all parties benefit monetarily as well as with branding, I say more power to it.

Fanboys should be able to enjoy their love without being waylaid into a product of inferior standing.

Here's some reading explaining why it can be done. http://www.entrepreneur.com/tradejournals/article/199864993.html

Actually, only the step-sister is getting anything out of it. Jimi's father left the foundation to her after he died, cutting off Jimi's brother...

Personally I have nothing against the Abbott family doing something like that in the future. You know how much Dimebag's estate was worth when he died? $700,000. That sort of dough doesn't go very far. People still have to eat and as great as Pantera were, I can't see their back catalogue royalties sustaining these folks' lives for even as long as the Hendrix estate may have.

And if I were rich and famous and my decendents did the same, what would I care? I'd be dead already. There's people spitting p*ss and vinegar over at TGP over the very same subject saying stuff like 'Oh Jimi is rolling in his grave'. Uh, no he isn't. He's also dead. He doesn't care.

Please don't take this post too seriously and get all worked up eh? :)

I have to agree with you completely here, and besides, to buy or not to buy, its entirely up to u.

Actually, this is where I have problems with this concept. I personally can't stand it when you see people acting like leeches after something someone built and amassed (in general, not just this case) like how some families show their ugly sides when it comes to inheritances. If one had any pride in himself, he's be working and supporting his own family without depending on a relative's left over fortune. If you're talking about children living off their family inheritances, I see little problem with it, unless you talk about those useless kids who don't work, and just sponge off their parents even when they're in their 40s. (yes, I know kids like that. I call them kids because they're still VERY immature).

I have a problem with this Hendrix thing mainly because it's not his family that's benefiting. Jimi never married and had no kids. His immediate family isn't benefitting from it. it's his step-sister who is benefitting. Someone who apparently didn't even know him when he was alive. how true, I don't know. But I really don't like leeches and freeloaders (having experienced some people like that myself).

To be fair to Gibson,

at least it dosen't say Gibson on the headstock. Rather its like a subsidiary company that produces Fender clones similar to what other companies had done. What remains to be seen is the quality of the resulting product.

If they can get decent qc and fretwork in, and the electronics are a close copy of his actual guitar, what we have is a winner. Im sure that there'll be many who'll be tempted and its cheap too. However at us$450 for a guitar and amp package my hopes aren't too high. Got to wait and see i guess. Mist likely MIC? at the epiphone factory?

A case of Janie Hendrix trying to make money out of Jimi's name.
Someone who she barely knew when he was still alive back then.
Oh Al ..... what have you done?

It's JUST A GUITAR AND GIBSON HELPED TO PRODUCE IT, IT DOESN'T SAY GIBSON ON THE HEADSTOCK.

CHILL LA, LIKE TO HELP FIGURE OUT WORLD PEACE OR SOMETHING INSTEAD OF GETTING SO EMOTIONAL OVER A TOY.

i was shocked at the 1st time... firebird headstock, stratstyle body&pickguard... a strat Clone
i dont see any gibson logo there... but its a shame on gibson...

hmmmh...
CMIIW .. when Ted McCarthy was still on Gibson... gibson is on its golden era new models like explorer, firebird/reversed firebird and flying V was born and many other improvements ... but no offend for gibson fans ...nowadays gibson is really slowdown... gibson needs another Ted McCarthy ... for further improvement
i like gibson but... its really has no big improvement that makes me amused, except the robotguitar :p.. reverse flying V hollow explorer.. etc i dont like 'em
when i read my guitar history book ... i like what ted's doing at that time .. many great ideas

aside from that ... i like ESP, Ibanez and PRS those 3 r full of ideas :)

you should focus on your english text book first don't you think? dude besides that. Think about it, this whole foshizzle doesn't matter. It's not gonna kill anyone and if you don't like it then don't buy it. It's not even a Gibson to begin with.
OH and FYI Gibson has much much much more innovations under their belt than the newer manufacturers though they may sound good, Gibson has still managed to prove it's name as a premier brand over the years.

@squirel .. ouch.. well its my personal opinion... well don't get so upset bro :) whats wrong with u?
well i said no offend to gibson fans ;)
ok case closed
peace softies... :-D
