How to sound like GNR for Sweet Child of mine?

Started out with my recently bought first guitar, a LTD EC-50 and 100plus Fender amp. wanted to start with something simple before i know what to upgrade. Chose Sweet Child of Mine by GNR as my first piece because there is plenty of resources on it and I know I can easily seek advise from many people here.

I dont expect much from my current setup. I did tune the amp setting to recommended setting found on the internet. But it is pretty far off from the original.

But with my current setup, what should i do to sound like (tone wise) the lead guitar of this song. Appreciate your suggestion.and any comments!!

just get your own tone lah..den will sound cool..but heres what i do when i play that song..roll off the tone knob on the neck pickup,this is called women's tone..and use a fat distortion..settings wise i anyhow one..usually i use something like high bass, at abt 3o clock mids slightly lower like abt 12 or 11..and highs would be at 12 to 1 depending on wad u want..

Get a boss metal zone, max out all the knobs and plug it into a small smarvo amp, make sure you're playing a TGM Les Paul, then pretend you're slash.

well if you want to sound like slash then you can pretty much get whatever equipment he is using... that would probably do the trick.

But IMO you should concentrate on the 'playing like slash' part first..

With your equipment, it's a bit hard to get the exact sound since he plays through Marshall amps (head and 4 x 12 cabinets). It's hard to make a fender amp sound like a marshall. Kind of the same as saying its hard to make a fender guitar sound like a Les Paul.

Though I'm not exactly sure your amp, I suggest setting the gain on max or 90%. Make sure your volume is first set at zero then adjust accordingly. Set your eq's:Hi's 50%,mids 50% and bass to 60%. You want to try to make your sound thick and "meaty" but not too distorted. Set your presence to 30-40%.

point taken, i reckon sounding like slash is easier than playing like slash. ha

Fender Amp and EC50. Not too shabby stuff.

You need to remember, that half of Slash's tone comes from the SD APH2 pickups he uses. So, that's one thing. The other is, you need a relatively "marshall" like pedal to get close to it. No, the crunchbox doesn't work. The more I use the crunchbox with my Slash LP, the less I sound like him. But the Valve Distortion from Digitech Hardwire coupled with the SD pickups is very close to the AFD tone. That's why I rarely use that pedal with my LP. Too close.

The EC50 is what? Basswood? Then remember that your mids and those from Mahogany are different. So a wee bit of EQ might be needed. But the pickups and the pedal would help quite a bit in my experience.

Remember, you asked for AFD and not Illusions.

But now i realise there is some problem with my newly bought amp. will need to sort it out first. Damn! The master volume of the amp doesn't seems to be working, cos if i set the gain to the max, irregardless how i adjust the master volume, it is still damn loud. so i cannot turn up the gain too much.
let me get this fix first.

IMO, learning to play it well is more important than the gear used. Concentrate on that and work on that tone along the way. with the gear aside, Your fingers need to help you get that "slash" tone.

Even if you use the exact slash rig might not necessary mean you will get his tone.

Bro, how is the hardwire valve dist? Is it any good? I have the tube overdrive and its way kickass. Would love to get another hardwire pedal. They are pretty good

When people ask they want “insert artist name here” tone, most of the times they mean “close” not exact same tone.

If you can afford, Gibson LP with Alnico II Pro and valve Marshall amp will give you very close Slash tone. Otherwise many multi effect units have slash patches on Internet, if you don’t mind going digital route.

By the way, recently I read in Total Guitar magazine that he is using MXR boost/overdrive pedal.

I like it... It's not as harsh as the crunchbox, and sounds very full. But it does need to be tweaked a lot to get a great tone.

I concluded that:
- Yes , why not make your own tone?, cos its difficult to come close because you are not slash.

- Focus on the playing first, which should be the priority

- I meddle with my amp (finally figure how to use it haha , its a Fender Frontman 15), Gain 9, Treble 7, Mid 5, Reverb 0, pick up at neck (u guys are right!) ... doesnt really sound like it, but I like it and it sure rocks!!
