what my friend, who is quite good, taught me was to learn as many licks as possible. learn and memorise them by heart, play until you r so sian of them, that u start to play them on other keys, or in different position of the neck. in time to come, u will have a beltful of licks to pull off when u wanna solo. haha, this is easier said than done. but it does works for me.
