How to properly store a guitar at home

i HAD A TRUSTY OLD srv NO 1 replica that I used as my main axe - I used to leave it on stage on in various clubs all the way - aircon / heat smoke, spilled beer -

surprisingly they sound (if not look) better after all that....

my 2 cents... 8)

my stringsrust easier when kept in gig bag.
so i leave it on the stand and use a towel to cover over to keep dust from building

i just leave my guitar in a gig bag laying flat on my spare bed and my strings dont turn rusty. is it considered rusty if my 1-3 strings turn black??

oh, and rust= iron oxide = iron+water+oxygen . so i flatten my gig bag till theres no air.

I personally use the same cloth for wiping the guitar body, and down the strings... The cloth use to wipe our weapon while in SAF.

Is it fine? Or do I need to have 1 cloth for the body, 1 cloth for the strings?

I read that some uses formulated cloth. Where do you get this formulated cloth?

TIA... 8)

If it's black then it's rusting already.

SRV's own no.1 is like trashed like shit, so I guess his you have to treat it bad and work it bad to get it going!

Use dehumidifiers!

Set the relative humidity to 45%

Use a hygrometer to check.

The alternative is aircon. It works like a dehumidifier too by reducing the moisture content in the room. But ur electrical bill will be damn high.

And about condensation. Its only an issue when u bring ur guit out of the aircon room. When ur gonna turn on ur aircon, wad makes u think water vapour is gonna condense on ur guit??? Ur guit is being cooled by the cool air produced by the aircon. Its not going to be cooler than the air produced by the aircon.

I hope u guys understand wad i'm trying to say. The humidity level is more important then the temperature. if ur talking bout temperature 20-30, its very safe already if ur humidity is at 45%.

Btw the relative humidity of singapore is around 90% and shoots up to almost 100% on a rainy day.. Good luck to your guits.

Wood acts like a sponge. They absorb moisture easily.

Lets look at a simple senario. U take ur cream cracker out of the tin. You forget to eat. Few hours later it turns soggy. WHY? cuz it has absorbed the moisture in the air... What less the guitar...

HUMIDITY the no.1 guitar killer.

it's best to buy a humidifier, to trap dust.
too much dust in the room will affect the guitar condition.

goddamn, the more of your posts i read the more i'm utterly convinced that you're a flaming idiot, or partially retarded. you have absolutely no clue of what you're talking about do you? humidifier trapping dust...hahahahahaha

Hmm, I think he probably made a mistake la.
I think I remember seeing his post on Luther or something for his guitar-repair company.

just take a moment to read his other posts and you'll see what i mean. i did it because i couldnt believe how someone claiming to repair and service guitars could make such a ridiculous statement on the guitar into bass amp thread.
it's pretty obvious he knows jack all, but some poor sod will probably end up sending his guitar to him only to have it ruined by this moron.

Hi guys,

Not sure whether anyone here tried this.

I keep my guitars in a closet and I place a mini dehumidifier from Home Fix inside to keep the air dry. The dry air makes a world of difference in preventing string rust (2 days outside on a stand vs a few weeks in the closet).

Its pretty expensive ($99 Zzz.. Homefix is a ripoff), but I guess until the cheaper mini dehumidifiers arrive in the market, this little box (2 x 1L milk carton size) is the best alternative. Those $500 monsters from Harvey & friends are too oversized for the job.

I figured that its worth it since I could (1) save on strings (2) preserve my painstakingly autosol polished chrome parts for a longer period of time (3) generally reduce corrosion and maintain resale value.

Btw, I keep my cables and effects inside there as well, keeps the metal from corroding as well. The next thing to do is to find a way to install a hygrometer to make sure the humidity doesn't get too low as it'll affect plastics.

uh i just keep mine in a multiple guitar rockstand in a room that has a/c on about half the time. no problems yet.

then again, all my guitars have taken multiple trips to the us, so their necks are pretty screwed up anyway.
