Well... erm... hahaha... yeah man... its application is getting smaller... kind of specifically for clean...
I use my Milkbox when playing clean jazz... it helps bring out my thinner strings since i'm using .9s to .42s. When you use that guage, going higher up the neck with your tone down makes your notes disappear.
I would use it for clean parts but not too much compression... otherwise i find it really stifles expressive picking.

On a distorted setting, I never use it... because I have a TS9DX running in to a Tri AC and with that setting and with the amount of gain I use, the tone is already compressed, I don't need extra compression unless I want a flat super smooth tone devoid of expression.
But I guess, on a lighter gain tone, using the Milkbox would help with tapping. ;)

Oh ya, the milkbox can be used as a clean boost... since its just boosting a clean tone, there's little noise... but not as a boost to an overdriven channel, it just milks all the noise and amplifies it...

yeah i never use it on overdrive as well...sorry to sidetrack more, but i've been wanting to get a tubescreamer for awhile...either turbo, vintage ts9 or reissue ts9 or ts808..which is better or what's the difference and what prices to expect both new and used? thanks dan!

gt2 into ge-7 works well enough for me. funny too that my ge-7 doesn't have any noise. my feeling is that it merely boosts any noise already present in your signal. or you might have tweaked the treble frequencies too high.

Erm... regarding TS9s... ok.. here goes...

The main difference would be the amount of drive and the op amp chip used. The classical TS808 and TS9s use the JRC4558D chip and most of the TS9DX and TS7 use the same chip.

For me... I'll just say that the TS808, TS9 and TS7 all pale before the TS9DX. Why? Because in terms of versatility, the TS9DX wins, hands down.
Of course, there will be arguements on basis of sweet tone but after a mod by Randolf, there shouldn't be much difference. Besides, you can ask Randolf to tweak it to your specs. Unless you really really have super ears and you find the holy grail original TS808 THE thing, then by all means, get that.

The TS9DX is what I'm using... its got your standard ts9 look and layout with the inclusion of a mode selector knob. So 4 knobs. The modes are:
1) TS9 mode - Standard TS9 tone
2) + mode - Less gain, more bass/volume boost, fatter and smoother tone
3) HOT mode - Even less gain and MORE bass/volume boost, fatter and smoother tone.
4) TURBO mode - Its got the least gain and max out on the above.

Personally, I find the HOT and TURBO modes unbearably bassy and fat. The normal TS9 modes is your standard TS9, great for a gain booster. The + mode IMO mimicks a DS-1 in that it fattens your tone for lead.

Note that all TS9 have this mid hump, which isn't actually a mid hump. The pedal reduces your bass and low mids, so there is an illusion of a mid boost. Thanks to Randolf for this info... ;) His mod removes this.

In anycase, I find the TS9DX a great pedal. If you want better, like I did, I sent my TS9DX to Randolf for the Keeley mod... adds a toggle switch for more gain or thicker tone, and my personal mod to have the modes increase in thickness and bass more evenly, so the HOT and TURBO modes are usable.

Yup... I use the Ge7 that way too... guitar --> ge7 --> distortion pedal --> amp.

The other way round, there's noticable noise, even when all sliders are at 0 boost.

Hey ShredCow! I got it! Kinda the chugga I wanted. Somehow what you said about increasing the gain and decreasing the level of the booster pedal caught my attention and I tried just that, and the result was stunning. It isn't too noisy/compressed, it's just nice, surprisingly. Now my fx100 and ds1 combi sounds higher gain than my amp! I don't know why but I just didn't try that before. Thanks a lot! I'll try the SD-1 as a volume boost for solos next

P.S.: Am I very naggy? Paisei ah. Even my mom calls me a nag

if ur planning to get a new pedal with more gain i suggest

Metal Zone
Uber Metal
Grunge
Death Metal Distortion
Marshall Jackhammer

metal zone cna buy for 80 at guitar connection
ubermetal 160 at luther
grunge and death emtal for around 120or so in sweelee
marshall jackhammer for 100 at luther and 90 at davis

Outstanding man! Glad you got something you like! ;)

Now for this SD-1 as a volume boost... I assume you are going guitar to dist pedals to clean amp?

If you plan on using the SD-1 as a volume boost, it should be after your main distortion pedal.. so guitar to sd-1 to ds-1 to clean amp. But in that way, your nice ULTRA tone will go thru the SD-1 and get coloured... you might not like that.
Try getting a MXR Microamp for purely volume boosting... Subversion did a review on that and he has that thing... I've tried it and its a great volume booster. Its pretty transparent (it thickens your tone just a tiny bit) and the boost is SUPER loud!
And yeah, get the SD-1 to replace your DOD lah. ;)

haha. just be like me lar. haha. use a plain ds-1 and a bass amp. though its nonsensical. i find the rhythm tone nice. haha. i used some peavey bass borrowed from my friend. put the treble to full and scoop the mids and bring out a lil bass. and ooh lala. haha. the reason i had to full the treble was cuz it was a BASS amp. haha.

Haha thanks ShredCow! Wouldn't sound so nice without your help

Eh vespa, my 1st amp was a bass amp, I kinda upgraded to this guitar amp, so yea. Sounds better than my bass amp haha.. The voicing is just different. Much more mids, I like :D

Hey audio, I think it's the mic. Karaoke mic
