HIP-HOP???

In da Bronx, the use of blings is to signify your status and wealth. Sorta like those rich tai-tais who prowl the Cartier shop at Takashimaya...

I understand how some metal peeps look at da hip-hop kids with a sense of bewiderment at what the hell are these fu ckers thinking of. But just imagine from the other point of view, what the hell are these peeps below thinking of too?

Being a metalhead, you might have to follow these rules to death...

gahahahahaha

i had a good time laffin at that article.

dude, the picture got one rocker guy. but some of the hand signs signify "I Love You" leh... :?

i know a thing or two bout hiphop.

there are some who produce songs with meaningful moral or story to it.

for 50 cent, he's just looking down on the poor and act as tho he;s the richest guy on earth.

but hiphop in singapore, seems pathetic.

hmm...sghiphop has a VERY LARGE following tho. i was at their Beats Society gigs for many a time when i did Poetick Syndrome. nobody rapped about ghettos or the bronx. kinda like the same with local bands when they write songs..topics bout love,angst,society..

and none of em had bling blings! its jst sometimes you see the odd fellas wearin all that, most of em jst frequent clubs and mostly..none of em knew how to rap at all or had no idea there was an sghiphop. groups like Public Eyez,FNDMNTLS..they make their own beats,rhythms,melodies..i'd call em musicians too. There was a band that did hiphop songs. yeah..a band with a guitarist.bassist, drummer, female vox...they kicked ass.

50 cent is nuthin compared to Tupac. but then again, my meat might be your poison

Issit Parkin' Lot Pimps? They are pretty interesting and the female vocalist Vannessa *something* is pretty kick-ass. Some collectives are decent while some crews just suck ass...

Yo, hit 'em up, muthafucka! Uh!

underground hip hop today could be like jazz in the past. nobody liked the way the african americans did jazz in the back in the pre-war to war era, even though it was a translation of the blues. jazz was considered noisy and slave music as well.

today, many people identify with hip hop because of its DIY ethics, and honest lyrics or political messages look past the MTV generation and hopefully the starter of this thread will see music in a bigger picture.

an amount of talent goes to mixing and production of mix tapes, as well as live dj turntablism. an acute ear and good taste are what brings a hip hop artiste up the plate, what loops to select, what samples you want people to hear.

just imagine you have your friends over in your room and you want them to check out some of your favourite music. well, perhaps DJs can be given that sorta credit when they "splice and dice" their samples. pay attention to your detail, and you will see another artiste honing their craft.

to lump everything as 50cent is pretty myopic

i always wonder why the songs is about pimp, boops, asses, sex?

wonder wat happen about expressing your inner thougts, life and feelings?

are all hip hoppers aiming to become like usher n 50 cent?

where hv the rap go? From police brutality to gangsters?

must all hip hops drive a mercedes humvey wif moified sound system inside?

Obviously those young hip hops hv forgotten bout da roots of hip hops... it actually comes from the raggae scene n then evolves to hip hop.. u noe hw raggae songs hv rap in the middle of the songs... thats hw it started...

it is always bout life and the hardship of it not some rich assholes rapping...

i think after years and years of oppression and discrimination and all of that, when they finally have a chance to rap out their thoughts along with tellin everyone how rich they gonna be, they just wanna shout it out loud.
with regards to the soft porn content, ah well...birds and the bees.

lauryn hill's songs gave new meaning to "thinkin out loud" :)

not all hiphoppers drive modified humvees. blame it on MTV's Pimp My Ride. lol. jst kiddin.

Not really, no. hip hop was influenced from other types of american black music such as funk. and it can be about any topic, not just bout life and hardship. Don't like gangster rap? Don't listen to it. That's what i do with pop punk and indie, so i don't see why people can't do the same for gangster rap. I feel that rap in singapore is not as overplayed as compared to stuff like hoobastank or crazy frog or numanuma ... maybe we should start a thread bout techno too..

There's a reason why lots of girls listen to BSB and the like--they're just differently wired from guys. Similarly, there'll be people who dig The Killers and those who think they should die. However, I think you'll find no shortage of people who think that the song "My Humps" is absolutely ridiculous. I mean, come on!

My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump,
My hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump.
My lovely lady lumps (x3)

What??

Hey, The Roots? Nice! That's pretty good stuff! :D

My Humps eh? You gotta admit... those are nice ones.

Hip-hop can be just entertainment like most other music. It can be treated like an artform as well. What I'd like to see in S'pore is more turntablist acts like Ko Lab (which is performing this Friday 20 Jan at The Esplanade Outdoor Theatre yo! Yesssh, pimpin' my gig here.) rather than more collectives and crews rapping and singing along to backing tracks. Can't really be spontaneous if everything is a -1 track.

It'd be cool if there was a gig where the turntablists and vocalists could 'jam' in a sense... get the best of both worlds; improv and mad DJ skillz. 8)
