Gear in doubt

10 questions to ask yourself bout your attitude towards gear and music, in general

1) Do you mentally go through what a piece of gear(before buying that is) can help in your music composing/production etc? (Note, its help in music general and not just looking for a nice sound but yet not capturing it down by recording)

2) Are you easily lead around by all the good words which others are saying bout the gear you are interested in buying, even though you have no idea/are ignorant bout what the gear can do for you in term of music production or writing?

3) Are you a demanding person when come to gear and music? If yes, why is it so, if no, what make you think you are not

4) Do you think you can learn anything by reading extensively, yet not hearing or trying out the gear over a long period of time(through buying and using the gear)

5) When was the last time that you actually believe what someone said, over a piece of gear thats popular and yet when after buying(note, after buying and testing extensively thru your different instrument, amps etc), decided that its not for you. If theres such occurance, what was that piece of gear and who was that fella who told you/heard from

6) Do you rather learn what goes behind the technology of the gear(bits of amps, effect, guitars etc) or buy into the words of what the advertisment/forum is meant to do

7) Are you willing to spend time, to find out, what goes behind the working of your instrument, effects, amps or just wanna concentrate on playing the geetar only coz thats the only thing you wanna. If you just wanna play geetar, do you think you want to learn the how to/what is/whats not, behind those gear you are using? If not, why

8 ) When was the last time that you experience joy, over music making, with a piece of gear? What gear was it and can you express the joy in words, how it might have shape your attitude in music making. (Note, please dont talk about tone, sound, warm, articulate etc. Take it as you are telling a non musiician bout the power of music)

9) Do you think that its weird when so many of us here can talk about gear in general but yet not hearing much of the music? If so, what do you think, is the problem

10) Do you think the space in between music should be silence or more music? If you choose silence, when was the last time you "talk" to yourself? If you choose more music, do you think you can do yourself and others a favour by learning how to be quiet?

I'll answer 8....

Was doing a recording and couldn't quite get the tone I wanted. Needed something sorta low gain but jangly.

Found it in an old Japanese clone of the MXR Distortion.

The end result wasn't only about the sound but it affected the way I played... that part of the song needed a certain biting, rhythm grind to it and with all the other stuff I had, I couldn't quite get that feel across. My stuff is more towards shred-till-yo-fingers-bleed-ARRGGG!!!-blah sounds.

So now I thought that gear helped to put across the playing better and I had non-guitarists giving good comments about that section (it was sorta an instrumental break).

heh, business bad this time round. Only you wanna reply.

Thanks though. So what was that japanese mxr clone brand?

In the mean time, lets go back to more recommendation, staring at pretty pics thread, tone talk thread

It was... Charon.
I know I found it in the old WMUM store and there was a vintage MXR Distortion+ there too. A/B-ed the clone and the real deal - the clone sounded better.

By the way - your question 9... well... this is a gear section leh. If this was the open mic and we're all yakking about the gear, then okay, might be the issue.

heh, interesting, was thinking whether was it coron, the brand. But turn out to be charon.

Oh well, guess my idea of a gear forum should have at least clips of music thats done with the gear and not just focus on the music itself. Afterall, for a forum like open mic, most would be focusing on the music itself and not the gear.

too much talking of tone and not hearing the process of getting the sound, idea behind the production, how a certain sound is achieved often give rise to the "mojo" talk that can be seen elsewhere.

Since theres more people playing guitar here and having some wonderful gear, i just wonder why arent there more more interesting things to talk, discussed, share or having some "out there" thoughts, other then "what to buy"/"what i gassed"/i share my picture, you share yours kinda thingy.

There were such deeper discussions before. Then it died off. The only tone discussions I have are on MSN with friends... on SOFT nowadays, I frankly have no interest to start any in-depth discussions, I rather give gear recommendations. Heh. I would love to talk about technique and composition but look at the Guitar How-To section? Tried to start some stuff a few times, never worked. So until I figure out a way to do stuff, I'm just tired of it. I'll stick to people who I know are genuinely into the music & tone, not just the next SOFTie looking for the cheapest pedal that will make them sound like supastarssss.

Like I said before, on SOFT, sharing lots of good things isn't necessarily the best way to go about sharing good stuff.

Since you miss the coron ...do you want it back? :)

I don't miss it Goose... back then, I didn't have the appropriate overdrive tone to get that sound, now I have the blackstone and the nuplex.

Both can do it!

If I find a need for that sound/vibe, I'll hunt ya down.

I'll bite...

1) Do you mentally go through what a piece of gear(before buying that is) can help in your music composing/production etc? (Note, its help in music general and not just looking for a nice sound but yet not capturing it down by recording) - Yes. Everytime I sit down and record, I think about the kind of tone I want to capture. Different tones will mean different kinds of playing, and different end results. I usually end up going thru a few of my guitars until I find the right one. So, having different guitars helps. If I want to buy a guitar now, I'll think of how it'll add to my current arsenal.

2) Are you easily lead around by all the good words which others are saying bout the gear you are interested in buying, even though you have no idea/are ignorant bout what the gear can do for you in term of music production or writing? - No, not really. I buy what I like, and I like what I don't already have. If I buy something I don't need, then it's most likely for the sake of buying noe that I don't have. And if I do something like that, then I'll probably never play it. Then I'll realise I won't play it, then I'll end up not buying it.

3) Are you a demanding person when come to gear and music? If yes, why is it so, if no, what make you think you are not - Not really. As long as it's a BALL. Because BALLS are BEST.

4) Do you think you can learn anything by reading extensively, yet not hearing or trying out the gear over a long period of time(through buying and using the gear) - Yes and no. Reading will give you a vague idea of whether it should be under consideration or not. If yes, then I'll go try it. If no, then I won't even think about it.

5) When was the last time that you actually believe what someone said, over a piece of gear thats popular and yet when after buying(note, after buying and testing extensively thru your different instrument, amps etc), decided that its not for you. If theres such occurance, what was that piece of gear and who was that fella who told you/heard from. - I've made mistakes in the past, but it's not from being nose-led. It's from THINKING that it's the right thing for me, then discovering that I'm not that kind of guitarist AFTER buying it. Most of my gear choices are the kind that people tell me NOT to buy...

6) Do you rather learn what goes behind the technology of the gear(bits of amps, effect, guitars etc) or buy into the words of what the advertisment/forum is meant to do - A bit, though not too much. If it sounds good, it sounds good.

If not, why - I think a little of both is important. Because they way you play affects the kind of gear you use, and vice-versa.

8 ) When was the last time that you experience joy, over music making, with a piece of gear? What gear was it and can you express the joy in words, how it might have shape your attitude in music making. (Note, please dont talk about tone, sound, warm, articulate etc. Take it as you are telling a non musiician bout the power of music) - Do condoms count? Ok ok... serious... It's basically when someone comes and tells me that what I played INSPIRED them to relook at their own composition. This happened with one backing track someone posted on another forum. I laid something down very different from what others did, and the original composer loved it so much that he sent me a thank you note, saying I've given him a new direction to explore by simply playing what I did. Now THAT'S gratification.

9) Do you think that its weird when so many of us here can talk about gear in general but yet not hearing much of the music? If so, what do you think, is the problem - We live in an acquisitional society. What you have seems to be more meaningful than what you can do. I don't know why it's like this, but somehow we've grown into this machine that just wants to own, and not produce. Perhaps we're afraid of critiques, perhaps we don't want to share what we do... I don't know why. Why don't YOU post something for us to hear?;)

10) Do you think the space in between music should be silence or more music? If you choose silence, when was the last time you "talk" to yourself? If you choose more music, do you think you can do yourself and others a favour by learning how to be quiet? - Wah lao!!! You reading too much Neil Gaiman ah??? I REFUSE to answer such a question that can and will make me look stupid regardless of what I say!

So there!!!
