Fretless Guitar

Out of pure curiosity, has anyone ever played a fretless guitar before? (no, not bass guitar)

Mind telling us about your experience and thoughts?

Pathin has. Though... not in the same way we think a guitar should sound. What he plays looks like a fretless guitar, I believe it is, but the sound that come out of it are just... strange.

Hehehe.

Google around a little, there's a forum for fretless guitar geeks. Also, on tgp, several threads on fretless guitars too.

I REALLY want to try one and even considered making a fretless USACG.

You shouldn't have suggested about the googling. Youtube makes me wanna try one too :p It sounds remarkably middle eastern, very full sound, definitely different from a fretted one.

Saw the forum on fretless but it's just more mojo to know that there are Softies who tried it before, heh.

And why am I not surprise if Pathin has tried it before?

I just got PM:

Hi THOA,

I saw your thread asking about the fretless guitar.

Locally, Rosli Mansor plays the fretless guitar. He also has a double-neck guitar of which one of the necks is fretless. His MySpace website is MySpace.com - Rosli Mansor - Ego or Truth - SG - Rock - www.myspace.com/roslimansor.

You can see his fretless guitar on SOFT gallery:
Fretboard Frenzy: Rise of the Stringers 1 (1 March 2008)
Fretboard Frenzy: Rise of the Stringers 2 (3 May 2008)

You can also hear his fretless in action:

Hope the info is of help to you. If you like to find out more from him, you can msg him on MySpace or email him.

Cheers!

yupp!! he does.. haven u heard?... check out his myspace... there's a song tht he has compsed using the fretless! and jus asking.. its interesting.. why did u copy and paste the whole thing? hahaha!

check out Godin's Glissentar... I'd buy one if I really have tons of cash bleeding from my wallet.

I tried one the other day, a custom ibanez 7 string version with killer DNA inlays.

I made it sound terrible, like senior citizen cats in heat.

Just goes to show how bad my orientation is.

It's not all that easy to play, but I believe if you give it time, you'll definitely achieve great results.

Notable players include folks like Bumblefoot aka. Ron Thal and our very own Rosli Mansor.

Vigier makes a killer fretless called the Surfretter, solid metal fretboard in a killer highly polished mirror finish.

and jus asking.. its interesting.. why did u copy and paste the whole thing? hahaha!

In my excitement, I kinda thought that I shouldn't miss out any details that might be relevant to this thread, heh.

Edder: Wah! 11... the number a bit odd for me because too used to seeing 6, 7 and 12 liao. You tried it before?

I saw the double deck guitar at guitar day. So interesting! But I'm wondering about the construction of the double deck. Looks quite heavy...

Is there a way to slice up the neck of the guitar...then like ummmm...gameboy cards like that...slot in the frets or fretless surface as and when required...Then it would be just one body with umm....expansion parts? ;)

Pardon me if this is beyond your imagination. Keyboardist here. lol...

There's this... convertible guitar. You can switch from fretless to fretted with a flick of a switch.

Its ridiculously expensive though.

my defretted tele. After so long, i still cant play it like a geetar. But for making processed sound with it, its a convenient tool, without the limit of the fretwires

The visible fret lines are pretty useful.

Wah! Can imagine how a defretted Tele sounds like. The possibilities... *drools*
