Fretless Guitar

It's a musical instrument for sure, but a fretless guitar is IMHO a misnomer. A fretless guitar is not a guitar!

It's a totally different instrument, requiring a similarly designed mindset.

It's a different instrument from a guitar - closer to the violin than it is to a guitar. The last thing you want to do is to hear a half-assed guitarist playing a fretless guitar, thinking that it's a guitar. PAINFUL!

heh, actually the geetar is still a geetar. Only thing to change prolly need better fretting technique(for the notes to ring out better) and pressing over the fretlines itself instead of in between

action is super low without the frets, sustain is shorter, much shorter then regular geetar(with normal geetar, the string be sitting on the fretwire, wheres fretless, our finger area pressing against the string be much bigger, so sorta dampen the ringing out for the string) , sounds more mellow(half wound strings on mine) when clean

sliding all around will get the mid easten vibe, got some mwah characteristic like frettless bass. Sound is smooth.

and for some goot fretless geetar playing, check out bumblefoot. Mad dude with great sense of humour in his music without doing all the shredding acrobatic action.

Check out "malfada" by bumblefoot, track done with fretless geetar and the guitar tab available below. I tried to learn it, but gave up half way thru and went back to playing with effect instead

I would believe the material for the neck would then be doubly important here as compared to a regular guitar.

Pathein Bro, what's the specs for your tele's neck?

*Disclaimer* this is just my opinion. no offence to anyone. sorry if i did not phrase it better.

a Fretless guitar is STILL a guitar, just that its FRETLESS, why? so that we can achieve the other 12 notes that usually occurs in music that comes out from all our ancestors, such as the arabs, chinese and indians. the reason why there is frets on the guitar, is to seperate the notes into semi tone.

the fretless guitar is tuned the same way as the the fretted guitar, just that there are more choices in notes. if a fretless guitar is not a guitar. den a 7 sting will not be a guitar too, or the 8 string. cuz it "defies" the law of a 6 string ah?

and the person who happens to play the fretless here in spore seems to be a very good representation of our local talents. :) i believe a few would disagree but i wont argue with your opinions. cuz the music will speak for itself. people can hear and listen and judge for themselves!

peace out!

heh, am not sure bout the neck material or profile, fretboard is rosewood, not exactly for fretless thou. Its a cij tele 62custom reissue model btw.

Actually, I'd agree that a fretless guitar is closer to a violin.

Other than using markers/lines to guide where to fret - the guitarist's ear is very crucial. If you're out of tune, you are out of tune - its not jazz. I think fretless-ness is unforgiving.

Call it what you want lah. The fact remains is that it's a different beast to tackle.

And bro Path..., please insert warning in the future for such excursions into MP3 land. For a short while, which did matter, I thought I was in Nintendo land. :D

Seriously though, it's a good thing but to get the most out of it, one really has to understand it well. As bro Path..., has mentioned, there is quite a bit of adjustment to be made on the left-hand. And that's just one aspect - one other thought should be what the heck are you going to do with it??? I have a few ideas but I'd rather keep them to myself for now.

But then i gotta agree with rr bro rr, shania twain be more interesting to talk here then the instrument itself. Instrument all tool if without context. If can talk about context of usage, it be more interesting, if not, we are like having word sex, all words, no fun, read too much, cant wank

locally other then Rosli mansor, Clinton carnegie also has recording of him with fretless geetar in his album. Can check it out as well

Hehe, as for using it in innovative way, i actually found one and i will share with everyone here for the first time....

stop playing the geetar... be it fretted or fretless. Give up on geetar once and for all, it will be the most innovative thing ever, to make music!

just give up!

come bro rork bro, we play nine holes in seletar country club, half price. i didn't see u at our gig too. :( bro pathein was cool cos he was there, i didn't say hi, but i felt this presence. i only played at 66.666% cos i couldn't feel your mullet.

i dedicate this in return to you! no guitar, no keyboards, but two flows of swords and one motion to put everything in context.
