fender humbucker help

hey guys. im looking to change the bridge humbuckers on
my fender highway1.
now i've got SD customs which are wayy too bright for em.
i'm thinking SD invaders or SD custom customs to bring out the crunch
and i'm totally not into active pickups coz it's just plain
inconvenient for me.

anyway what i'm looking for is a nice crunchy raunchy sound ...

any suggestions?

SD Custom bright? i have this in my Ibanez RG321- it has added bass...

the Custom is the bassiest among its other siblings: Custom Custom/ Custom5.

Inavder has bass overkill, some like it, some don't. Fender has default Pearly Gates Plus in selected models, you might wanna consider the Pearly Gates. for healthy blues crunch, the Custom5 will serve you well.

sd custon seems out of control on my highway1 man...
coz theres no tone knob to tame it... its just too much.

anyway mine's a highway1 so de humbuckers some
'atomic humbucking pickup' according to de fender site.
pearly gates?

i get a great blues sound off my single coils in my opinion
already. so i need something to rock... i u know wad i mean...

thanks a lot subversion.

wah if u think the custom is bright i tink the pearly gates will kill you leh... but the pearly gates and JB are my fave duncan pups though.

minor mod to just wire one of you tone knobs to control your bridge pup.

can use one tone to control 2 pups also easy mod.

try a JB also, duncan recommends 250k pots for a JB so is good also since strats usually have 250ks.

All strats bridge pups are traditionally wide open meaning no tone knob.

wow. lp and fenders are wayy too diff.
coz the custom was from a epi lp and it souded great there.
and on my fender... yah...

actually rewiring sounds like a gd idea....
how much wud tt put me down?

Soldering iron - $30+
Soldering stand - $10
Solder - $6 (big roll)
Satisfaction from wiring up your guitar yourself - PRICELESS

Or send it to a techie. Should be quite cheap, I think.

im 1 of those balless guitarists who wouldn't mess around
with his fender if his life depended on it... maybe a tgm...

the controls on the highway1 are "greasebucket" controls
though... which means it reduces the highs without
increasing the bass. would that affect the rewiring?

Greasebucket note

the new Greasebucket tone circuitry features the less-highs-no-dded-bass circuit and it's wired to the bridge pickup (unlike it's predecessor).

I would REALLY advice you to try out the tone pot to control the bridge pup.

If its done, Custom Custom or 59.

Someone on the Seymour Duncan forums has a strat, a Marshall JCM 900and a Custom Custom bridge.. He gets real Marshally raunchy tones with more good mids. Musical sounding mids that are nice with a Marshall.. I shall see if I can dig those up for you.

the Custom Custom has a strong midrange response. some people think that it lacks bass. to me the Custom5 sounds more balanced.

strangely... my greasebucket circuitry seems to be wired tp
de neck and middle instead... *shrugs* highway1s are
strange machines i guess...

thanks jony. thats exactly the kind of raunchy i was talking
about. big help.

but to answer my last question... would the re-wiring affect the
greasebucket circuitry? cause it'd be a damn pity to loose that
feature... i love it.

hmm subversion is right the Greasebucket is connected to the humbucker also...

"Master Volume,
Tone 1. (Neck Pickup), Greasebucket™ Tone Circuit, (Rolls Off Highs without Adding Bass)
Tone 2. (Bridge Pickup), Greasebucket™ Tone Circuit, (Rolls Off Highs without Adding Bass)"

just a guess but ur wiring might have been messed up or reverted back to the usual fender specs (tone to middle) by the person who changed ur pickups. anyway just bring it over to a guitar tech to have a look. even with a fancy name like Greasebucket it sounds similar to a very common mod so i dun think it'll be messed up.

or... just change out ur pickups la. i'll buy the custom back from ye in case i change my mind about going the p90s route. i'm keeping my alnico IIs in the axe though.

i have a pair of P94s for sale if anyone is interested. They are P90s in humbucker sized pups. anyway the treble bleed mod is a very simple job. u just need to add another resistor in parallel or series to the caps. i dun remember which, need to google it.
