extended non smoking areas

Even if it is just $4 per pack, lets say every month, 10,000 packs (a very small estimation I think) are consumed. So that makes 120,000 per year.

That is $480,000 profit solely from tobacco tax. And this is considering that the tax revenue or $4 and the amount consumed are most likely very understated. I think the total tobacco tax revenue can easily hit $1m at least. And don't even get started on alcohol, that one easily millions upon millions of revenue

better la . Ya i know but no for smokers .

I'm againts smoking and smokers and smoke . Dun like , act cool only! hee.
Coz cannot take it . Those smoke from the cigars and mouths are smelly !
I myself have problem wif smoke, jus a little bit of smoke(from smokers la not me) breathe in suddenly in the air can make me cough badly . And i mean really very bad . I even vomit sometimes because of that! I don't even have asthma !

Dunno why so sensitive to smokes .The sensitiveness is not normal like other people, where the cough is only just a while . Mine can lasts for a few days . Imagine i try to smoke, more worst !
I'm happy that i don't smoke and I CAN'T SMOKE ! no health risk !

Distortedbassist although there are many especially young teens who smoke to look cool, there are many other reasons. Some is addiction, for me its more of a habit then an addiction. Something like biting your nails, it isnt an addiction, just a really bad habit.

But yea smoking does screw your health up

Distortedbassist: dun say till like tat la... lol smoking is not tat bad compared to drugs. maybe u nid to check up la,ask the doctor y u cant tahan the smell n the coughs too...
as for me...i'm just heavily addicted, can be at least 2-3 sticks in 5mins...

and yes... kids, its not cool to smoke...

do long as outside the club I play at still got the 5 smoking tables & the 24 hr restaurants I go to still have - I'm ok with it. in fact if they ever ban smoking at home - I'd be cool with it coz I dont smoke at home

I ever saw a kid who looked 14 years old smoking at Skate Park. OPENLY! I could easily report him,. HAHAHAH!

I dont like the sight of kids smoking openly.

And oh.. talking about taxes and stuffs... Ever wonder why theres Duty Free Goods for tourists?

No. The reason for not banning smoking country-wide has nothing to do with the taxes. The revenue lost due to tobacco-related illnesses (including hospital care, medications, days lost to work due to tobacco related illnesses etc - for smokers themselves and all people/children affected by 2nd-hand smoke) far exceed the taxes collected. The reason for the high tobacco taxes is to discourage smoking.

It's not easy to ban something like this country-wide. It's has societal complexities. However, banning smoking in open spaces is the best way. Reduction in environmental tobacco smoke reduces 2nd-hand exposure and hence illnesses, helps those who quit/intend to quit stays that way, and has significant public health implications.

I think its revenue. Govt knows ppl will still pay taxes & levies to buy cigges - no body bat an eyelid even when they first outlawed chewing gum .... myopic view I know but the reality is $$$$ talks here. Alcohol & tobacco are just too lucarative, alongside erp

Much as it's nice to think of conspiracy theories, but the amount of money tobacco taxes are collected do not cover the amount the govt has to pay for problems related to tobacco. A study done a few years ago showed that direct and indirect cost related to smoking cost Singapore up to $839 million a year (upper bound) - excluding lost of household production. That's a lot of money lost a year.

Oh, the study is not done by the govt, just in case you are thinking about biases.

Smokers have to pay such a high premium to smoke, and yet treated like 2nd class citizens here. Imagine if China subject the same kind of duty to it's citizens!

China will follow suit I believe. It's a matter of time. The only reason for them to move slower is because most men smokes in China. Report says 66%. My experience is more than 80% of the men smokes.

In 2000, smoking-related consequences (healthcare cost and lost of productivity) cost China US$5 billion. Don't have recent figures, but I'm not surprised the figure is much higher now.

The point here is not about "treating smokers as 2nd class citizens". The point is about reducing environment tobacco smoke (ETS) and the benefits in terms of public health. While smokers have the right to smoke, non-smokers have the right to smoke-free air. It's certainly not easy for either groups... Sometimes policies like these need to be made for the greater benefit of the population. And as with all policies, some people who always get into inconvenience. Perhaps the solution is to reduce ETS while, at the same time, providing more "smokers" areas (enclosed)?

oh wells. they'll never be and ending debate about smoking. well, at least now they'll be lesser smokers on the roads (i get headaches and dizziness from 2nd hand smoke)

well, although it seems like a big inconveniece on the aprt of the smokers, but hey. at least now maybe less people will tell them off for smoking in "morally/socially" wrong areas

Yeah, quit smoking (I was once one of you!!!) & spend the $ on guitars & gears, better...Hahaha...Anyway, its nothing to lose in the first place...Gd luck, smokers!
