Equaliser Choices.

So Shred, tell me about why at the end of the day, an EQ pedal is redundant to you?

I know Im not Shredcow but I agree with what Shred said so here is my 0.02c:

If ur amp/pickups/efx are producing the kind of tone you wan, you should not need a EQ pedal to shape ur tone too much unless you're like a sessionist and doing really extreme styles of music like from jazz to hip hop to funk to black metal...

Usually I find that adjusting the EQ setting on my amp is enough and ever since I got my Jim Wagner Pickups, I rarely boost or cut my EQ anymore, cuz the pickups gives me the kind of tone I wan...slightly rolled of highs good mids and a fairly tight bottom :)

Unlike previously when I was using Dimarzio's and EMGs I've to adjust my EQ alot to get the kind of tone I like and at times I find that it is like impossible for my EMG 81 to sound less brittle and my EMG 85 to sound less bassy....

beast, you NAILED it.

I'm getting the tones I want from my gear...

When I was in MDC, had to play pop/jazz/rock, my rig was geared for that, had a TRI AC, 3 channels, good enough. Compressor for jazz. That was enough for me.

Now, I'm just putting my own tone together and I got my guitar's tone with the HAS Sound Viper pickups. My current rig, its good enough, I got what I want to hear from it.

guys..i use the eq(stomp box) just for solos only...to boost the midrange..as for bass n treble depends on wat i hear on that particular day..

but i dun do that if im using my preamp...just need to switch the patch thats all...

diff strokes for diff folks..

the behringer may works for some for just a try out

but my friend got it and it spoilt nearly after like few months???? broke...

and one thing about behringer is that its cheaply made so the parts are not really good... it adds chuck of noise...

Hmm.

well yeah.. I guess it is cheaply made, but I've had it for a while (2-3 months?) and it seems fine... no noise whatsoever.

But that said.. noise depends on your EQ setting.. if you boost too much of the treble frequencies of course got hiss lah. Also depends on your guitar's pups... and how ur EQ setting affects your tone.

Crawldaddy brought up a valid point.

Boosting = adding more gain/volume = more noise / amplification of whatever noise is there

So do you need the MXR EQ's 18dB boost?!?

Ah! Interesting topic which often comes up among tone enthusiasts. Maybe I can learn and share some tips here...

There's a big difference in using an EQ pedal before or after the compressor, OD/ Dist and the input of the amp. Most beginner guitarists tend to use it to make their amps sound like stacks which may usually sound fine at home but the moment you bring this setup and setting to a performance stage you'll quickly find that things start to get out of control...not forgetting to mention the amount of hisss and wobbling lows ya :)

An interesting way to use the EQ pedal is to actually set it like a top boost but this works especially well in full tube amps because the the over saturated highs in tubes will start to smooth out like Brian May's and Edges's tone from using the built in top boost in the classic Vox AC30 amps. The funny thing about saturating pre and power tubes is that the intermodulation of the high frequencies start to smooth out instead of getting harsher.

The usage of Eqs discussed here seem intended and more to do with post miking ie at the sound board which is whole different volume of discussion altogether.

Dude, you opened my eyes to the world of pedal positioning with that phrase long long back. Its crazy, that tweakability!

hmm...well, i have the mxr 10 band eq...juz aquired it recently...lolz...had shit loads of fun tweaking and changing my tone...found a whole bunch of stuff tt worked and didn't...its amazing the amt of tones u can get by fine tuning ure eq...but its true tt ure sound is always diff frm when ure playing at home and when ure playing live...i was jamming recently with settings tt were pretty damn solid on my tb15...when i plugged in to my friends tube amp, my tone went to hell...took me awhile to find it again...completely f-uped my sound and my jam session...but at the end of the day, after a lil experimenting, i found a tone tt works, so i'm pretty damn happy abt tt :D

@Phil
Just tweaking or you want to base all of your tone on it? If you want to use the eq as your tone stack you got to set your amp to be as flat as possible, either by setting your bass and treble to 0 and mids to 10 or by hooking up to the power amp directly. You then do the same when you play elsewhere, so you will sound consistent.

do a search on david gilmour's pedal board and check out the GE7(S) hahahaha....

if its good enough for mr gilmour, its good enough for anyone here. its all in the application.
