Drum Xchange: Singapore Drummer Circle (ALL are welcome!!)

biz2020 bro, maybe not sticking pattern, but this site has the taogehs (as well as some very useful MIDIs!) of popular afrocuban rhythms: Bembe, Songo, Mozambique, Samba

http://www.formedia.ca/rhythms/5drumset.html

also i just realised from perusing the site, the beat that ahpek often teach us is songo... i been playing what i dunno sial...

again, this is not substitute material for a full-time drum teacher, very introductory stuff, realy need a good teacher to help us understand the history, culture, feeling, context, playing approach of afro-cuban better... just passing on the huge amount of cyberspace drum material available to fellow drummer/softies... cheers bro

cant wait for the next one to come.. plainsman quickly organise lol...

Not sure if this helps, but I found this on the web on the bembe.

"You have probably heard this ride pattern before. As has been pointed out to me by several readers, notably Brian M. and Jeremy A., it’s an African rhythm called bembe or hoeblade. I know I’ve heard Mike Portnoy play it, and I’d be interested to know other sources — send me an email if you can name a song or solo that incorporates it.

The basic kick/snare groove is a heavily ghosted shuffle, using a bounced ghost approach that I learned from Atma Anur. This is just one example of what can be played under the ride pattern, of course.

/3\/3\/3\/3\ (shuffle feel)
1 2 3 4
RC o o oo o o
SD oo o O o oo
KD o o o
"

Hope that helps. I don't have any software to render it in taugeh form, sorry about that.

EDIT: it looks kinda weird when copied over so i'll post the url. http://www.debris.com/journal/382

Yes, the bembe is an afro cuban rhythm. As for the sticking it's really hard to type it out here. I'm available for lessons if anyone wants more of what I've shown at the exchange. Thanks lots. :)

Thanks for sharing those stuff during the x'change Chewy.
Yeap with all those bouncy notes goin up and down can be quite demanding to put it into text.
Thanks bro

Cheers' Keep on rawking.

biz2020 bro,

Thanks for the URL bro.
Those patterns are real fun to play and mezz around with.
The beauty of it all - It still in 4/4 time sig "But" 6/8 in "Feels" to get the groove swinging.
Know what i mean? damn wicked ma'an, but real tasteful musikly, be it Songo, Mozambique or Bembes.

Rawk on bro.

hmm....got bastard by a guy who sae wanted to sell me pearl rhythm traveller...haiz...anyone can help ? im looking for a rhythm traveller set. AHpek daniel jerry or any pros here can help ? any lo bang? heh! quite desprate for it....if second hand i oso dun mind.... :D

Hi bro, Swee Lee still has the Pearl Rythym Traveller in stock(if you need brand new) or the alternative is to get DW-Pacific Chameleon kit, same as rythym Traveller but the toms have mesh head on one side and normal head on the other which is about the same price as the Pearl.

If iam not wrong,

All music store should have it.

All music is located in parklane shopping cte lvl 2.

Last ive seen, its going for $540 somewhere ard there.

540? that's quite cheap...swee lee selling at 720...i do check their webby regularly to look out for discount....haha!! DW-Pacific Chameleon kit....hmmm...is the two side both mesh headed ? i cant find a full pic of it...hmm....look quite nice too....

Hmmm, not a gd time to buy frm Swee Lee now.... I bought my RT frm them around 4-5 yrs ago for $800, and back then it did not even come with real cymbals. Haha, all the plastic pads have since broke. Anyway, during the Great Sg sale this year, the make do kit was retailing around around $500+-$650 (can't exactly rem). So why not wait for awhile? Can save some money for other stuff...

Btw Is Luther still selling the chameleon, or is it already sold out?

The get together session looked gd! Hope to be at the next meeting!

hmm...the great singapore sale u mean next yr or the upcoming yr end sale? i do intrested in the RT coz im living in the HDB. an acoustic will be nice but need to gamble for good neighbour...hmm...or mayb mute pad but that i rather go for RT... or is there any other recommandation ?

Actorial: I know wad u mean! I've been at loggerheads with the neighbour living below me for the past 8 yrs! Haha.... Relations have improved, but it's kinda like how Korea+China regard Japan! Hahaha... She used to always come up and make noise, but yea, the bass drum was indeed making her lose her afternoon nap.

Maybe there'll be some christmas special? Heh, who knows, maybe Swee Lee might have a massive 50% off sale again? (I Wish!)

But seriously, nth beats practising to a proper kit. For instance, based on my experience with the traveller, I can strongly say tt your learning curve will be impaired if you're gng to stick with the mesh heads (personal opinion). Not tt it isn't condusive enuff, but I initially faced challenges in practising the press/buzz roll, I couldn't get used to playing the snare+rimshot combi, couldn't explore diff accents, or tones available to the snaredrum, or the toms for tt matter. So compared to guys like Daniel (not chewy) who have pure acoustic sets at home (his set+hardware is SICK!), I found myself really stunted in terms of 'feel'.

However, the RT allows u to maintain ur setup, and it goes a long way for practicing strokes/rudiments around the kit. For me, between muffling pads and mesh heads, the latter gives a better feel to actual playing.

Sorry for being so 'Lor Sor'... 8)

doublestrokesg: wad u sae do make sense huh...hmm...but heard that the traveller can oso change to the normal drum skin right? and the sound of it not that bad oso( what i read and heard lah ) tama stagestar is quite high ned for me i guess...wad is the price recently huh? the last seen price at swee lee i think is 800 + ? hmm....staying in HDB cause headache to drummer huh....hahah!!!

HDB- Headache for Drummers Basically... Pardon the corn...

Of course can put on the real heads... But it'll be back at square one. It'll always be loud for tt neighbour. I used the real heads initially, neighbour complained, changed to mesh heads, she still complain! (surprisingly, the neighbours living on the same floor have always been cool abt it) I figured that whenever I step on the bassdrum, it causes a thumping sound to the unit below despite having a thick carpet. Machiam pounding chilli according to her... Haha...

Anyways, all the best, and may you have more gracious neighbours compared to mine!
