oh.....is jerry a teacher at yamaha?

jerry is the owner and resident producer/mixing engineer at myx studios =)

from what i know, he has been teaching drums for a long time, stopped for a number of years, started giving lessons again 3 years ago. i was fortunate to have learnt from him during his second phase, then he gave up drumming again - in order to focus on recording and mixing (lol)

i caught up with him a little yesterday and he says he has tried to pick up the sticks once again.

i think this happens to some, if not many of us. we play, and then we have to let it take a backseat, while we focus on other career and/or family commitments and other personal goals.

while i'm not sure if he still teaches, let me know if you're interested, PM me or something, i'll give you his contact or something ok? :D

cheers,
alfe

wah...jerry's groove clip has some clava in it man, someone was playing the bells?

ahpek...shuffle was good.

pity i couldn't make it.

thanks rui & ofunk bros for the tip, i'll try and 'rotate' them... i think some of the softies go and do it themselves already..

shavin, no worries... make time for the next one!! i'll try to pre-empt the guys earlier for next round, as well as improve on the logistics & planning, so that we'll have a more 'satisfying' exchange..

drummer-buah, next exchange we will make sure you go up and play .... hehe......

warm regards

right as usual! ahpek do u give drum lessons?

Hi 17wil, currently i stopped giving lesson for awhile due to my 6-nights a week gigs at devil's bar and my day job. Will definitely teach again very soon.
I can only recommend you to Daniel, who just got back from Drummers Collective, he was at the jam, the one playing the 6/8 groove adn also you can go to Music Clef at suntec, Jimmy Lee is teaching there. For lessons, i advice everyone to learn from experienced and proper drummers/instructors. There's alot of other proper and experienced instructors around but currently i can only think of these 2.

But no worries, i'll be around for the next jam! :D

*Those who can't dance, can't drums

Sorry that i couldn't make it guys, had some personal issues... let's just say that the people closest to you bring you the most problems haha.

I really really hope that I can make it for the next one. The paradiddle videos looked good, and it was pretty funny :D

"what do you call this?"
"paradiddle lor"
"OMGWTFBBQLOLZZZZ!!!"

I did go for the simon phillips clinic though. Man it was fantastic but also the loudest clinic I have ever been in... unless you count the akira jimbo one where i was sitting directly in front of the amps 8O

Hi guys,

thanks for coming down and making the event a success. Really glad to see so many drummers wanting to share and learn more. Esp Jerry and Ah Pek revealing the "secrets" to good drumming.

Btw, I just remembered the name for the 6/8 pattern I was playing...
it's called bembe.. LOL! How could I have forgotten it!!! Too much songo and bossa I guess... hahaha! Anyway, thanks for hearing me drone on about drum stuff during the exchange... just hope you guys benefitted as I have from all you guys. Keep up the drumming spirit!

Lastly, I have no ill feelings towards anyone in this forum or Singapore Drum Circle... All is forgotten guys!

May the groove be with you! LOL!

drum circle

Hey Y'all,
Good stuff that you guys are holding this sharing clinic.
Took a look at the videos. And a long hard look at the parradiddles. I am not a 100% sure if my vision and my hearing holds up, the first paradiddle clip didnt apprear like a RLRRLRLL. It looked more like a double stroke technique across the set.
The third instalment of the paradiddles had two different types of playing I think. The first half had his left hand on the snare while the second part it was mostly on the toms.

One question that I have been meaning to ask but always forgot to. If you substitute any part of the strokes with a kick, is it still considered as a paradiddle. For eg RLKKLKLL (K is kick of course).

AH Boon put in a clave in his studio??????? HEE didnt think it was a clave, or it didnt sound like one from the video. It sounded like a two cowbells and someone was joining in the groove.

Keepa drumming people.

Yeah, sometimes it is good for us all to have a meet up and put a face to the virtual nick online.

There are potentially less misunderstandings after everybody has a meet up and get to know one another better =)

cheers

ps. Darren, i think Ohfunk (was it you?? XD) was playing a clave-esque pattern on the agogo bells when Jerry was blasting away lol

Yup Darren,
Jerrys first clip, was a double stroke excercise around the kit.

Chewy are bembes one of afrocuban rhythm?
if you can post up the sticking pattern best la.
T.Q.

hey everyone, im thinking of getting a pearl rhythm traveller. do u guys think it's a good set ? im living in HDB so i guess that's one of the best choice. hmm....need help from u guys....any comment abt rhythm traveller?

pearl rhythm... shld be quite ok, as long as you're not too fussy. you should make a trip to a shop that has it to try it out though, maybe with a friend who is slightly more experienced drummer and can offer you a different perspective.

can also consider tama stagestar series, or manu katche hipgig jr if your budget allows. manu katche kit got a set at nigel's drum resources, do feel free to drop by and check it out =)

for those curious about headcount, i've also updated the first post of this thread. wah, so many softies didn't make it in the end, but it wld have been orgy boy..... 30 drummers in one room?! 8O

Yes, the bembe is an afro cuban rhythm. As for the sticking it's really hard to type it out here. Plus also if anyone wants more, then I guess I have to treat it a little differently. Hope you guys understand. I didn't get my material all too easy and if I did I wouldn't treasure them much. I'll end up not practising anything if that's the case. Thanks for understanding. I'm available for lessons if anyone wants more of what I've shown at the exchange. Thanks lots. :)
