Oh wait. You guys referring to guitar connection ah? The 2nd hand guitar shop opp Guitar77? I thought Guitar Center. Paiseh.

Malcolm has done some excellent work on my guitars and so has GC. But the thing that irritates me is that on more than one occasion I have brought my guitar in to get a job done and the shop takes the liberty of doing more - like filing down the nut or changing pots etc etc.

There really is no excuse these days for not being able to diy. The info to do basic setup is freely available and its not that difficult. It just requires some common tools and a little confidence. Of course bigger things should be left to the pros.

Yea, but you gotta remember, not many people is gonna take that risk!
BTW, how much for a proper set up and fret job at Malcom's?
And pickup installation and pot changing at beez?

Forget Dan Enterprise,

Heard so much about the guy.Heck, even experienced some stuff. The old Indian man(no racism intended though),glued the pot of my Tri-Metal pedal.I asked for a nut to be replaced, not glue it.
Had to pay $25 for him glueing the pot, ridiculous.

I know this has nothing to do with setting up the guitar, just a point to consider.

ALiP_BoB: Send an email to Malcolm to enquire about the prices. He normally replies the next day. However he is at camp til 8th December and should be available next week. At least that's whay I know =)

Hmm, maybe to shed more light on his prices, they are higher than most local techs but are more of the value for money if you get what I mean

Can you give a rough estimation of the costs??

For a proper set up and fretjob at malcolms
and a pot change and pickup installation at beez.

Go email Malcolm.

We aren't his sales personel and he will have to look at the guitar to give a quote.

No way will I quote, only to have my name used against me when a haggler arrives at Malcolm's doorstep.

I hope you understand.

That said, Malcolm is the best. His complain-free record is a prime example.

Okay then. I never done this. I just want a rough estimation. Will it cost below $50? above $100? More then a Sadowsky?

I normally do my own setups and and electronics. Like someone else has mentioned, infomation on setting up a guitar is readily available and the tools needed are basically screwdrivers and ellen keys. Masking tape and autosol if you want to polish the frets.

Setup is a run of the mill kinda job and something that you might want to do everyone now and then so its cheaper to learn to do it yourself. Its easy but take patience. Just dont go and force turn the truss road if it wont go anymore. Give a man a fish and he has food for a day. Teach a man to fish and he has food for life.

I'll send to a tech if it needs a refret or a new nut or cracked neck or bad fret buzz no matter how you try to setup and those kind that need specialised skills or tools.

Wiring is pretty easy if you can solder and read a schematic. Soldering can be pretty easy if you use the right iron and technique (which again can be read on the internet). For example, you'll use a 60 or 80 watt iron instead of 25watt iron to solder to the back of the pot.

it all depends
what kind of frets you want ?
brass, stainless steel , nickel ?
how many frets your neck needs refretted ?
what kind of neck ?

To many variables ....

I think i prefer pure gold frets ...
their warmer sounding ...
esp the soft 24k ones

dun get the cheap 18k gold "lee hwa" ones : )

worldwithoutlines

hahaha...next time if you want work done at Dan Enterprise BE SURE to ask for FGL's service   - I hang out there many evenings to talk kok sing song & smoke .... (i dont work for or even assist him unless special assignment).

Dan (the elderly Indian dude) does good accoutic set up only ... and isnt all that great with refinishing either - BUT he's probably alot cheaper than the other techs around the area. So yr call ... especially bearing in mind if U got a cheapo axe or custom shop model U think abt having work done on...?

Glued in effect pot? What the hell???? hahahaha :P

I meant just i dunnoe... Nothing to do with refretting la... Just set up the neck, make sure it's smooth etc2...
