I can't believe this is really happening in Singapore..
Oh my goodness..
moreover authorities did not seemed to take any action against her yet. (pls update if any)
Even if she really have valid reason why she couldnt teach on a particular day.. still she needs to arrange some make up sessions with the students straigthaway.. And not postponing it.
And usually (as far as I know) the industry practice is that if teacher cannot come for lesson you dun have to pay for the lesson missed.
If the student cannot make it to the agreed timeslot, then it maybe a different case. (esp in music schl)
Not to mention that Mrs Koo asks for 10 lessons in advance.. usu private piano teachers can ask for 1 mth fee in advance, i.e. 4 lessons.
I do understand why most teachers ask payment in advance, but we are hired by these ppl pay for our service and thus we are obliged to teach as agreed.
Based on experience, if students pay in advance, they are more motivated to go for lessons, as compared to pay per visit / pay after teaching for 4 lessons, and less chance for last minute changes..
"I really can help u complete it in time still. We have a month to go. I am done with the topics, just need 2 sessions to guide u through your papers"
It's not only replacing lessons(i notice that you offer less than what you missed), but also about trust.
How do you feel if say you got an exam, say A level in two-three months time, but your teacher was absent till the very last weeks? Will you believe that your teacher will not commit the same mistake again?
How do you feel about her?
I am not here to add fuel to this-already-flaming thread. But to raise awareness
Because private teachers doesnot usually write up contract or give receipts for payments made.. then if something goes wrong like this very rare case, obviously we cannot charge her with breach of trust / contract. Even scamming is hard to prove.
So the key is to discuss how lessons are conducted, when to pay fees, see her certs (just for completeness sake), and of course if you agreed to, say pay every 10 lessons in advance, then indirectly you are putting yourselves in bigger risk.
It's true sometimes we need to be extra cautious on some simple things..
