Vern's take:
Irregardless of whether "Diamond/Dimebag/Five and Dime" Darrell was a racist or not (true, he had a Dean guitar with a Confederate flag emblazoned on it) is largely irrelevant here. Wagner was a devout Nazi - does that make his 'Ride of the Valkyries' any less valid as a standalone piece of inspiring music?
Diamond Darrell was a musician. It is/was his music that mattered and touched us. Moreover, he was a guitarist. Did he ever play any 'racist' riffs that incited violence against 'niggers'? Did he ever rip out some screaming anti-'Chink/Jew/Frog/Kraut/Wog' lead guitar solo? No. He played the guitar and he played it well. What he did in his private life was up to him. If he was a KKK member, or if he imported dozens of Congolese slave eunuch children to mill flour in his cellar in Dallas using tiny hammers, I don't really care. If you start adding in the personas of the various artists in the worldwide listening roster and objecting to their musical output based on their prejucides, it won't be long until you have nothing to listen to at all. It is human nature to have bias, and none of you reading this can claim that you are without sin and ready to cast the first stone.
What I do care about is that 'Vulgar Display Of Power' or 'Cowboys From Hell' or 'Far Beyond Driven' are absolutely spectacular albums, featuring his razor-sharp riffing, killer (non-denonimational-oppressing) solos, backed up by a tight and brutal rhythm section and fronted by an awesome frontman. Dime's guitar tone set a very high benchmark for crunch that was both fat *and* scooped - few people to this day have been able to duplicate it.
This forum is for musicians. It is not a political forum. Juvenile slagging of personas is just that - juvenile; "Dave Mustaine is a wanker" (or whatever); constructive criticism - well done whoever that was - I bet you spent ages thinking of that retort. True - he has an ego problem, but despite the fact that Dave is one of Metal's greatest rhythm guitarists (BTW - he sings over those riffs that are more complex than most people's solos) did you know, that he offered one Darrell Lance Abbott a place as the lead guitarist of Megadeth at one point in history? Probably not.
Yes, I am sad today. I have found out two days after the event. I'm tired and crabby, so sue me.
