Creating ambience sounds

Ambient sounds... Steve Vai's "Erotic Nightmares" and "The Mysterious Murder Of Christian Tiera's Lover" comes to mind. Now THAT'S ambient. And the guitarist (Vai) has a lot of work to do. Creating soundscapes, images, scenes and even in some cases, dialogue with the guitar. Have not come across another guitarists with this kind of control over the instrument.

Ambient sounds relying on overdone flanges, reverbs, delays and phasers aren't really difficult, and honestly, are just noise to me.

I usually get a big sound from what I have right now, don't know what you mean by "big" but it's pretty big from what I hear.

I use Chorus > Wah > Delay. The wah is in the middle of the pedal chain cause I want the strong digital swell. Tone suck or whatever, I don't care, if tone suck is my sound, then I love it.

this, is Robert fripp, he is frippertronic, he, is guitar ambient, the beginning. He, rocksss, much earlier than what many of us guitarers wanting to do soundscape on guitar can be.

Eh TS, you can check out this local duo, one ta boh and one char bor. Their name is Aspidistra Fly. Quite ambient... Their CD price is even more ambient!

yeah im gonna consider stereo too, but one thing about that is where you are seated/ positioned.. it can get really tricky especially in a live setting.

Nah, what I meant was the digitalised swell sound, it just sounds like a controlled flanger at times.

You can poke my eye now, if I don't make any sense, just that after you poke there's no reversing the spiral.

Heres a friend from ourshore, doing noise/electronic stuff! I is heart him and have lotsa fun/inspirations talking to him bout music, ambient sound and space around us. Away from the context of the proper guitar playing, structured notes and pitches.

His use of guitar effect for noise/harsh noise stuff is actually quite impressive. The amount of gain are so intense, it will make high gain amp distortion sound like overdrive instead, especially when seeing the waveform of the sound...

Just get the Line6 Modulation module. It's good enough unless you have a good budget to get something better. Just make a trip down to some good places where they have live band and check it out yourself.

An ebow is also handy for ambient sounds. Another one to try is a volume pedal.

I wouldn't put Steve Vai in the ambient category. I'd be thinking Keith Fullerton Whitman, terry riley or seefeel type stuff.
