I am wondering what is the answer to this question old people say when you tell them that you want to play music for a living in a pub or anything.

I have a friend who was offered 4k salary playing music in an overseas pub.

Can any pro musicians care to share their experience and point of view to those hoping to go through that path ...

I think I am not qualified to answer your qn... but I do think music as a passion, if you are very good and indulgent in it... It can definitely make you a living as well as a lifetime hobby....

He's a soloist who sings and plays a guitar in pubs and still do..

If there are budding musicians who wants to choose that path as their rice bowl, what positive advice would you give to them....
So far .... all i known of are basically negative advises ...

so which country did he went to and where does he perform? what's his name?

well, those that i can disclose are Sun Yan Zi, Tanya Chua, Dick Lee, Ah Do ... hmmm.. still got alot.

those are well known ... well, He is just an ordinary fulltime musician.
Yup, There are many like him thoug ... and we need their views on this question.

If he teaches lessons regularly, and plays in Pub, and perhaps shows at times, knows how to financial manage himself properly... I really see quite a good life... And needs to be a really PR person...

All the dynamism in SG... :p

are you planing to be a professional musician? i mean, are you asking the question so that you can have a gauge if you can make a living as a full time musician?

well... making a comfortable living is definitely possible in SG...

3-4k salary is also very realistic for a full time gigging musician --- 6 nights a week banging out top 40s in a pub.

on top of that if you give lessons... and actually have a sizable group of students..will add more $$$ to your monthly income.

Problem though is that you might not have CPF , which is useful for singaporeans... esp when we get older. can use the medisave... or cpf $$ to invest etc... buy flat..blah blah...

and you wont see much of daylight cus you play starting 10pm - 4am and your off day is most probably a monday or tuesday.

if you want to live like a "high income" individual....say a general manager of a medium to large company.. its not possible.. unless you strike gold and start as a world class performer/sessionist. or your band becomes the next Blink 182.

yeah i'm very interested in this topic too.....

but...usually parents always object as they see no future in this.

are we talking about soloist now?
how about making it thru as a band?

which i find it hard in singapore.
especially the public acceptance of genres of music.

let's say you are offered a musician job overseas, you go there and you failed.
you have to come back all the way here again and there's no insurance that everything is "real" across the borders

well i admire those who do music as a hobby, but have another job. cause with the money they earn from their job, they can invest in their music, and at the same time, earn money from gigging/pubs etc as a part timer. i think that would be ideal!

and u get enough money to form an EP and stuff!

just that with the other job, u have something to fall back on

hmm...i always wonder...artists that r mainly working overseas like sun yanzi all those who mainly work in taiwan...do they still need to pay for CPF and all those taxes??

Hello to all on this thread. I am sorry to say that I know almost nothing about the music scene in your country of Singapore (I only know that many things I buy here in the United States are made in your country). Some of you might know that I am a professional recording artist and touring musician. I have not been to your country (yet), but I do travel around North America and Europe often on tour or with clinics or other things related to music. I also sell my cds in more than 40 countries. So I do know something about this business on a global level.

in my opinion, the problem with this thread begins with the title of the first post."Can you be rich playing music for a living in sg?" The problem (again, in my opinion) is with the size and quality of the question. I do not mean to offend anyone, I am here to offer a peice of advice with sincerely positive intentions.

If the title question was changed by deleting this part "in sg?" I think the ANSWERS to the question can flow in amore positive way. So here is what I mean, Singapore is a growing economy, but is still far behind countries like USA, UK, Japan, Germany ect. in the music scene. So if one lives in Singapore and thinks only about making a living in Singapore his/her opportunities are vastly limited for many reasons. BUT if one lives in Singapore and thinks about making a living all over the world, the solutions to the problem of making money can come more easily. The world is a VERY big place, there are people in other countries around the world that have the desire, the will and the money to pay for products and services that a good guitar player living in your country could offer. You can make a VERY good living in your country beyond your dreams, IF YOU THINK BEYOND THE PEOPLE IN YOUR COUNTRY. So you may live in Singapore and never leave your country, but your money can come from anywhere in the world! You do not need to leave your country to earn large amounts of money from other countries. There are many many ways one can do this and i am sure most of you are now curious about it. So I will say only this for now. THE QUALITY OF YOUR QUESTIONS WILL DETERMINE THE QUALITY OF YOUR SOLUTIONS!!! THE SIZE OF YOUR QUESTIONS DETERMINE THE SIZE OF THE RESULT.

THINK! THINK!! THINK!!!!!!! Put your brain to work. Your mind is more powerful than the world's most powerful computer! If computers can find solutions to problems, your brain can also do the same but with even greater results! I want to give you all a lot of time to think about what I am saying here. Really think about it. Think Big, THink beyond borders. Remember you speak English and have internet! You have the power to reach a billion people.

I know what I am saying seems like something only in theory, but I know it is true. I have acheived my success and good money on my own. I did not wait for others to "give" me opportunity. I created my destiny and continue to do that. And in many ways I had a severe disadvantage compared to all of you. I am American, I live in the most wealthy country in the world and probably also the most expensive (maybe Japan is more expensive now to live?). So I must earn MASSIVE amounts of money to have a rich life now in America. In your country you can have the same lifestyle with money with only a smaller fraction of money. Also remember that everything I do I must sell to others in other countries that do not have as much money as most Americans. But you live in a not so wealthy country, so your "customers/clients, etc." maybe living in very wealthy countries and have a lot of money to spend. in their country it is not so big money, but in your country it is bigger. Example. If I sell something to you, it might be expensive for you because I need a lot of money to live here in Chicago. But if you sell something to me and need money for a good life in Singapore, that money is probably small for me, so I can afford to buy it without problems and I can buy it many many times. This is why so many products in your country are sold here. MUSIC INDUSTRY CAN BE THE SAME WAY!!!! But most people do not understand this yet. You have HUGE opportunities! In fact you have much more opportunity to earn a rich living in your country than I have in mine. I am very successful, but it is much harder to do it here I think. Some of you might think I am wrong, you might think that I have advantages because I live in the land of most opportunity (USA). It was true in the past, but not anymore. INTERNET AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR YOUR COUNTRY"S opportunities. You have much much much more power now than ever before.

I can tell so many ways to build a fortune there. But it is YOU that must use your mind's power and the resources of the global reality. Here is a small clue. What do you have that most American's do not? Here is another clue, what is the most valuable resource? Here is another clue, What is the one and only thing that the most wealthy person in the world and the most poor person in the world have the EXACT SAME AMOUNT OF? When you know that answer, how can you leverage that to your advantage? Think about this for 6 - 8 weeks and contact me, I'll be back (if you want me to come back to this thread).

in the meantime, understand that you have the same (or more) opportunitiy in your country as any American has in USA.

wow long post but meaningful!

but then again, dont u have to be the best of the best in order to succeed?
