Can you be rich playing music for a living in sg?

To tany: Of course not! Can't you think about famous people making millions of dollars that aren't that good at all as players? Do you know someone that is a great guitarist that isn't famous already? Of course. Talent is only one aspect.

To bongman: There are of course "at least" 100 more ways to succedd in this business as musician besides playing live, recording and production. Keep thinking about it more, you can discover many more things and ways

There is a distinction between an entertainer and a musician where making a living and one's lifestyle is concern and I believe you know what I mean. Well of course the two are closely connected.

Since this thread arises and it is something very very close to my heart, I just wonder how many people here really really wants to make a career out of music, whether as an entertainer, musician, producer or manager?

As Tomhess mentioned...THINK. If you at bare minimum has the intention to do that, how much thought have you put into it? I hope I am wrong in believing that most actually put playing in a pub regularly as their ultimate. Can we not have bigger ambitions? Do we believe that our music can be sold globally?

+1 !!!!

well personally. me as a young drummer is alwasy bombarded by limitations.
there was once my dad was reprimanding me. drums will get u NO WHERE!!
he really did emphasize NO WHERE!!! it broke my heart and well. i don't give a shit about wat he says. i believe in my own talent in drumming and i'm gonna make sure i soar beyond wat they think i am or wat they think i should be.
i feel that u really need a great sum of determination and focus on what u really want to be. and you will achieve it.

you may want to seek local famed drummer Jimmy Lee for advice?

I once talk to an instructor from Music Clef, he has 40 students;
40 x $100 == $4000 ???

that's his salary ?

Jimmy Lee is a popular session drummer who has receording credits
for Taiwan/HK artistes such as A-Mei, Sun Yanzi, Jacky Cheung, etc...

Lee also does projects with Ricky Ho

Another local famed drummer is Tama Goh
oh... one more Lewis Pragasam ...

because they're an example of a band that has supposedly "made it" commercially in singapore. so they're an interesting case study of whether a band which is supposed to have commercial and marketing success actually has financial success as well.

How much can each gig pays?
How many gigs one can do in a year?
What's the cost of producing an album?
What's the cost of sale of each CD?
What's the nett revenue for a band?
Divide that perhaps equally with every member and you know whether there is financial success.

i think having a job and playing music striking a balance between both is a challenge.

like a lot of parents thinks that music gets you no where, well why dun you get a stable job and continue playing music as well? cause it's just your passion whether you made it or not, you are still gonna play.
then if you failed. you have something to fall back on like what tan_yl said.

you need money as well! (on the route to sucess)
no money how to get you gears? production cost? etc etc...

ultimately, this is singapore, it's practical. i think we have to play what others like instead of what we like, true?

let's say now lin jin jie becomes a metalhead.
he dun do anymore cool shit.
he does growling and kbkb-ing all the time

i guess his fans will drop by 50%
and the remaining 50% will be psychoed to be a metalhead =X

does that mean playing in singapore has to be commerical in order to be accepted by the public widely? rather than underground scenes...

just my thoughts :)
