Boutique Gear: When did you fall for them?

The blackstar sounds awefully heavy and screaming. There's loads of harmonics too.

Or how about the Boss MT-2? Muahahahaha!

For those keen in killer metal tones from pedals, here's wat i found from the net. I have the AMT Duhast, still fabulous.

Here's a list of "metal" pedals I've tried:

Zinky True Grit - gets the sound but has a "white noise" issue
Zoom Tri Metal - nice but got lost in the band
Zoom Hyperlead - a better Tri Metal, a little too ice-picky for me
DOD Grunge - yuck
Subdecay Blackstar - not compressed enough
Rocktron Rampage - used this one for a year gigging, just too big for my board
Rocktron Metal Planet - a better Rampage, still too big
H&K Warp Factor - great nu-metal sounds, way too big
AMT Fatal Tube - Ozzy in a box with a nice 3-band eq
AMT Du Hast - Rammstein chugs all the way, massive gain
Pro Tone Body Rot - more cranked Marshall than metal
MI Audio Tube Zone - this one's still on my board
EHX Metal Muff - I'm liking this one more each time I play it

So, Mrben, the Metalmuff is the pick of the bunch?

Tubezone sounds good, but with the backlog, ahhh.

mrben is right about the blackstar not being very compressed. for those who want very compressed chugging tones, this may not satisfy your tastes. for others who want hi-gain, tweakable low-end distortion and lotsa harmonics, give it a shot.

i think pedals that give you very tight, compressed tones wont get you gritty yet singing leads... thats what i've noticed from a/b-ing between my J&H (more compressed) and my Blackstar

Is the metal muff available locally yet?

i dont think it's here yet, but WMUM should be bringing it in, according to edder.

u can get it from Tonefactor, only $100 USD (add $15 for shipping). but this pedal is not true-bypass, if i recall... so that kinda sucks (pun intended)

Thanks for the info! i'll think about it!

Since we're on this high-gain topic, i've been considering the krank distortus maximus. Talk about super high compression, here are some soundclips i found (bottom of page)

If you still have one, you can try it with a Fender Strat & a Twin Reverb. So far the best combination I´ve tried with.

For a reference, what I used at studio yesterday:
Twin Reverb: Normal Channel 1, Vol:6 Bass,Mid,Treble:3
Hyper Lead: All EQ at 5, Adjust Volume and Gain to taste first, then Adjust EQ to taste.
Fender Strat, Maple fretboard, Alder body, shielded (cuts a bit treble): Full volume for solos, Vol:7 for distortion rhythm.

Cheers
Raymond

interesting suggestion... i would think that using a strat and a Fender twin would make the tone even more icepick-like? :?

I have not tried the blackstar personally. i gathered these info over the net..look at forums every day…just a way to relax and understand more about pedals and gear etc…It helps me to make a decision and sometimes indeed the cheaper stuff are the better ones. Now it seems I like to understand EHX metal muff..

BTW i have a Twin Reverb, however i dun think anyone can have the volume at 6. I played only at 2. As for ice picking tone, no worries, i have installed the weber beam blockers. U can hear the difference and disperse all the icy tones....i love the stock Jensen speakers...

Nice. I've been looking ard too. I'll jump the gun on the blackstar lah... trade my hellbilly for it.

Btw, brundy will have a field day when he reads what you wrote!

The trick here is to cut the EQ on the Twin. :)

Anyway I didn´t find my tone thin/trebly at all, although I was going for a more thinned-out sound without the loss of treble for the songs my band was playing.

mrben: I tried at Tiet Studios, so heh. Strat was on stock pickups too, so lower output I think. There´s a ¨6 is a magic number¨ article somewhere for that amp but I lost the link. :| No sane fella can probably turn the amp up 6 in a small home room.
