BEST OF G3

AS you all know, last year's G3 consisted of the likes of joe sat, vai and petrucci, much debate has been around since that time and i wonder who you all think the best among the three? All of them, without doubt, are perfect in their instruments but what really sets them apart from one another?

i think tt's a really tough comparison....i hate to say this but technicality wise, i think jp tops it...but vai and satch got their unique points too.

Why do you hate to say it? :P

Anyway, don't see whats so technical about JP's set... picking and picking and lots of picking... the other 2 had different things going on, insane tapping and whammying from Vai, esp the harmonies amongst his guitarists... Satch was being minimalistic and all about groove + note choices... and killer legato playing. Nice JS7!

Satch & Vai have Petrucci's technicalities- AND more. it's how these players are plying their trade these days; they are moving away from conventions.

there's no best.

I would prefer Vai - a very expressive kinda player & very bold.

Satch & Petrucci are both technical & cre8ive in their own ways too.

I love all of them.

Conclusion : All of them are better than me!! *Argh*

Nah, its not that i'm comparing them, i don't mean it that way... Dunno how to put it, they each have one strength comared to the other.... Like yngwie, he's all about speed but i don't see him much in terms of expression... Vai is all about feel and such. Its juz such great guitarists that leave my mouth open... sigh...

Personally I prefer Petrucci and Vai in that order. Vai is extremely expressive, and Petrucci just plain rocks. I still remember the first Vai song I listened to, "the audience is listening" when it was released during my student days and I went "!@*(@*#(&$ is that really a guitar?!?". A large number of Satriani's songs have a robotic disco beat in the background with insane shredding. He is technically great, but I don't like his thin, sharp icepick-like tone.

i like steve vai best...especially when he play The Audience is Listening...he's more concern about stage performance rather than looking at notes that he play...more to feel....very grace performance..unlike pettruci....

woohoo, did any of you hear vai's building the church, its crazy how he double taps 2 strings... but frankly, i love satriani for his accuracy... Wonder how he pinch harmonics on the 24th fret... i tried but never had a real nice clear one...

haha. i tink over here, we're comparing their creativity & musical arrangements rather than their speed of playing

thats cuz its what defines skill, the way its arranged and played rather than speeding with no melody, isnt it?

did he? i tot most of the time he use open string 2 pitch a.harmonics? hmz..

sadly my favourite G3 line-up till now, was never released. the euro leg of G3 1998/9 in U.K. Headlined by Satch, Micheal 'V' Schenker and Uli Jon Roth [ Satch's big influence from the 70s, on his Sky Guitar, 7 stringer 30+ frets] and Queen axeman, Brian May joining them during the jam seg. did manage to 'get' 2 bootlegs on audio :)

i love petrucci. he has this playing technique that is so distinct and special.
joe and vai are more on the effects.

yeah... petrucci has crazy talent and his sense of rhythm is crazy. In suspended animation, his songs change meters like every minute of the song... but sadly, he has no stage presence... he just stands in front and plays :( ... steve vai on the other hand, runs around the stage like mad... he's hyperactive i think!
