Best OD/Dist Pedal for Tube Amps

Boss OD-1?

I have a Thunder Tomate (i hope i spelt it right) Taxi Driver pedal... its supposed to be a faithful reproduction of the Boss OD-1 - but with true bypass and LED.

Its not mine. Its Mrmisse's. Just in my possesion coz he was kind enough to let me take it home to try.

If you really want the OD-1, this would do lah. Call Mrmisse and ask him for the pricing. It isn't too expensive... in fact, its damn cheap compared to what the real OD-1 goes for now.

Oh, u want my opinion on it? Not good as booster. Not good at all... when on, it cuts bass and accentuates the upper mids to the point your tone becomes extremely compressed and overly treble-ed.
Perhaps you would dig that? I dunno....

i was pretty surprised when i plugged my GT2 into my 5150, the results werent that good. Actually, its pretty bad.

First in front of the amp, and then in the efx loop and lastly straight to the poweramp. All pretty bad sounding :(

i was thinking of using that tweed gt2 setting for the mediocre cleans of the 5150, but nope, not working for me :(

not sure if u read my post properly, but I'm using a menatone king of the britains. There're many other menatone pedals, of course. I'm just one of the users. read my earlier post for some info.=)

oops....i think i missed that....lol...i have heard great reviews on menatone..how much did you pay for yours? the top boost in a can is one interesting pedal but i wonder how close to the sound that it is supposed to be.....

Actually, it's not surprising. Not surprising at all. The 5150 has very little headroom left to offer, and the GT2 is fairly high gain.

well my fulltone ocd sounds great on my amp stocked with el84s. clean channel. cuts thru the mix nicely. sorry never tried it with the stated amps tho...

i was using the tweed setting on my gt2 though, with very little gain

It's really hard to assess how much is much really - that same GT2 tweed setting can sound really good/just nice amount of gain hypothetically on say, a Fender Bassman or Twin Reverb, and be way too much on another amp. End of the day, you have to realize that gain pedals tend to sound different on different amps. A general rule of thumb I conclude, is to try and assess how much headroom each amp has - as long as you don't oversaturate the amp with gain, it should sound better than if you did.

Yea actually reread your post. Problem occurs when you try to move from high headroom to low headroom - you can't. Nice clean tones are -usually- - but not always - at low headroom.

Your best bet to get better cleans is probably to mod the amp for less gain or to bias the tubes cold. I'm no expert on 5150s though; probably you would want to do your research on 5150 mods.

loads of bias & clarity mods offered for the 6505/5150, i dont know about local ones tho.

i would get a dedicated clean amp tho, no point modding the 5150 into something it isnt.

damn I'm late in this as well...

capt oreo... hur hur hur... you've got my number. call me lah if you wanna give my Sahasrara OD a go at yer amps.

having been skeptical about keeley pedals before... i bought a keeley ts808 from a fellow forummer few days back. i must say.. it is one of the best OD's ive ever put infront of my amp. its less gain then my barber direct drive. but has a much better useable range from cleanish to overdriven tube amp.
my barber only does light saturated OD to full on marshall. couldnt get that light slight breakup thingy going. now i can.

now im gasing for a keeley ds-1 .. muahahah

I have the Zvex box of rock, I think its quite a nice OD/Distortion , as compared to my other shitloads of OD pedals.I a/B ed it extensively and feel that it really sounds diff from my other OD pedals.

you can basically get a more dynamic OD sound, with just the right level of mids and basically your tone does not thin out due to the substancial low freq response too.

Also, the boost section is worth trying out too.

Im using a Fender Am deluxe HSS btw, thru my pedalboard, thru to a Roland JC 60.But I read somewhere that it sounds great thru a toob amp

Other ODs that I own are , Mi audio CB, BBD, BP, vintage Rat, BB preamp, Zim, OCD v3, tech 21 DD, erm etc etc, can't remember lah.

Oh ya, the B.O.R does not have that much gain on tap, and it is supposed to mimic vintage marshall amps on 10.

you could check out the video demo on zvex website.

hope this helps :D
