Barber dirty bomb!

The pedal's really nice sounding for a "boutique' pedal. But to me, it sounded kinda thin and not that bass heavy.

Then again, it might just be me.

I think it's just you :p

Jokes aside, have you tried tweaking the internal bass trim pot? Some amps just lack bass because of small speakers, which do not all the tonal qualities come through. Even my openhaus (which ordinarily sounds HUGE), sounded quite thin through my Epi VJ Combo, which had an 8" speaker.

If in doubt about the Dirty Bomb, just buy it. For a little more than a metalzone, you get handwired quality components, none of the PCB mounted Boss stuff. It also chugs like a monster if you manage to dial it in right. Now, if only there was a mid control instead of a mere toggle switch.

just take boutique as very very very expensive.

david barber hand makes his pedals thats why ppl consider them boutique but they arent priced like boutique pedals.

Boutique builders are usually small operations, without the backing of a corporation i.e. Boss. The reasons why I would go boutique are - handwired parts, the ability to communicate directly with the builder (Toneczar and Barber are good examples), and the fact that these builders tend to improve upon what is lacking in production pedals (Explains the multitude of TS clones). Think of it as paying someone to talk to you about your options, using quality parts such as Alpha pots, Switchcraft jacks etc, as opposed to something churned out of a machine, relying on the same circuits that have been used since time immemorial.

On the flip side, they are often ZOMG expensive (Toneczar), hard to procure (BJFE), or cost a bomb to ship to Singapore. Thank God for TYMC :)

To the OP, have you tried a Catalinbread Supercharged OD? I think it's more defined and bigger sounding than the dirty bomb and will still give you that heavy sound. And it has smaller size too. Am not sure about the price now though.

It's a superb pedal. I got it from TY a couple of months back. However it's different from Barber's other OD pedals, this one is right in the distortion territory, though it does very well even with the gain all the way down unlike some orange-coloured mass manufactured pedals (famous brand that shall not be named) that sound like tin cans on almost all settings :) Lots of harmonic content in the dirty bomb, cleans up if you turn down your volume, doesn't sound like shizzle. Does very nicely in a 2-stage OD/dist setup. I use a low gain OD before the DB, and toggle it on for a bit more kick.

I am looking to get this pedal but TYMC dont have stock...D: Anyone who has this pedal care to share about this pedal? I like how it sounds on the youtube videos of this.

Yeah..i had that ''orange coloured mass manufactured pedal'' before. Even though it was modded, still dont like the thin sound. Thanks for the replies, i think i shall go get it NOW!!! (but no stock)

Speaking of reasonably-priced boutique pedals, Catalinbread is, IMHO, king. Not that you should ever buy a pedal because it's boutique, but TYMC is the dealer for Catalinbread too, and man those are some amazing pedals. Check them out, unless you have your mind set on a Barber already.

Actually even if we don't consider the price, both makers have pedals that can hold their own against much-more expensive pedals. One example is the Barber Small Fry. I'm not really into the robben ford dumble tone but dialed properly, that pedal can churn out some convincing dumble tones and then some. I even liked it better than the zendrive that some people before waited for more than a year. I also got to try an Ethos OD before that even utnil now costs a bomb. It's got so many knobs that it's basically an amp interface in a huge pedal. I prefer the simpler approach of the Small Fry over it.

To jeffrey, good luck on your search and hopefully you don't have to spend so much trying stuff around before you get your ideal tone. Cheers!

I don't know how this became a Barber fanboy thread, but its cool haha.

I've got the Small Fry, Dirty Bomb, Burn Unit EQ (Dual channel Small Fry) at the moment, and have the B-Custom Cool and Barb EQ coming in the mail. Can't wait :)

Once I procure the Tone Press and the new B-Custom Super Sport, the collection will be (almost) complete!

^ I use a Tone Press, much preferred it to the "industry standard" Keeley 4-knob. The Barber fanboy thread continues.

haha. But seriously guys, after having tried lots of OD pedals thru the years, the best ones for me didnt go over 350sgd. The ones that went over disappointed me. They have all this extra tweakability that actually were disadvantages coz it's so hard to get tone from the pedal equivalent for what they're priced for. I think a lot of ppl realized that now especially with the current economy that more dollars doesnt mean more tone. You can only do so much to modify a tubescreamer or a ds-1's tone.

Lol ive been a fan of barber products since :

Ive heard the barber ltd, the barber DD SS.

Finally, the one that prompted me to buy it and till today i dont have a single regret : The barber direct drive.

Now the barber dirty bomb has impressed me i really have to say barber stuff are really bang for buck. Barber products have never failed to amaze me not only with their versatility, but pricing and designs too got me waiting for my direct drive for almost 3 months before i got it and the wait paid off really really well.

Yeap. Holy Grails can't get holier eh?

Hey Daniel, i agree it seems to be that way. And yeah, you're always one of the first guys here in soft to try new and original circuit designs whenever such things comes out like the skreddy screwdriver and share it to us. And I don't know if we should thank you for that. You're one bad GAS-inducer. haha.: )
