bought an MXR carbon copy. powered it with a one spot adaptor with its 8 looping daisy chains. after less than a week the pedal died. a local tech concluded that the one spot power supply burnt the mechanism in the carbon copy.

any of u have the same issue b4? is the one spot that crappy considering that it stated in http://visualsound.net/PDF/1SPOTCompatibilityChart.pdf that it is compatible with MXR.

Why no switching type adapters?

These days there are plenty of switching type supplies out there (1spot/Godlyke/Diago/Rocktron etc, and of course the Maplin/Radio Shack variants). They can deliver more current than a standard adapter of similar size, and are also said to be quieter with less hum. And still I do not recommend any adapter of that type. I'll even go so far as to strongly advise against using them. They can cause a high frequency whining noise in certain pedals (mostly clock-driven circuits like delay/reverb/chorus etc), which is not nice. Also, a problem in one of your pedals can cause them to severely damage your pedals.

Wow, I'm on a 1-spot and this got me worried - so what's recommended? How would you power 4-5 pedals? Use a standard transformer type adapter? Something else?

its not normal for adaptor to destroy the pedal usually unless using wrong adaptor with wrong voltage rating, mixed up dc/ac etc

did the tech mention how one spot can burn the mechanism in the pedal? To conclude its one spot causing the problem, there shud be some details which resulted in that. Just curious bout it.

If u can't find the Boss transfomer-type power supply, do try out Biyang power supply. It's similar to Boss and it's quite cheap/hum-less.
About $25 at Standardvalue.
