world war I took place only in europe, not the world..

I guess but it wasnt only europe that was affected. It also changed history greatly. it was one of the major events of the 19th?20th? century.

Anyway singapore is a very multicultural place and this day has meaning to some people (such as myself)

lets be harmonious and respectful!

Indeed it altered history to large extent and its effects are still felt today. The fall of the ottoman empire prolly gave rise to Muslim extremism, and from there you get terrorism.

But anyway. every single day will bound to have meaning to some people, just flip the to the straits times back page, F.Y.I there is column "This day in history".... and 2 days later it will be the most meaningful day in every year for me, because its my birthday. :D

so what happened to the ottoman empire? all i know is they harassed veniced and venice died... then what? europe gang up on ottoman?

Its like posting a topic about remembering the the hock lee bus riots in an american forum.

hahahaa... now thats what I've been trying to say... you're just more articulate.
Maybe you missed it..WORLD war 1? Its no little thing. If you don't agree, shut your mouth - don't go shitting on peoples threads. I have Family who died in that war, and because I live in Singapore, I post on my local forum that I want to remember those that died fighting for what they believed in. If you want to make a thread about something you want to remember that holds significance to you, then go ahead, im not going to come along and say "haha lol   they are only chinese people i am not even chinese who cares". People made a thread remembering, say, Dimebag when he died - he is also "foreign".

IMHO, it doesn't matter that the people who died were European and it's not insensitive to post a remembrance thread at all. Don't tell me 9/11 didn't affect you simply because it happened in America? Those men--sons, husbands, brothers, fathers--went to war for their country and died. Those who want to remember that should be allowed to do so without getting slammed man. When the time comes for other remembrances, we would commemorate those too.

+1 to the-Warlord and ixora05
Some cool stuff for you to read:

"Britain emerged victorious against Germany from the Great War of 1914-1918, but it only revealed about her dependence on American support and intervention in Europe. East of Suez, she was totally dependent on Japan for naval security. It was the Japanese navy which chased the German squadron out of East Asian waters and patrolled the Indian Ocean at the request of the British. In terms of local security in Singapore, Britain was also vulnerable and dependent on the Japanese. When the Sepoy Mutiny broke out in Singapore on 15 February 1915, the town was at the mercy of the 800 rebellious Indian soldiers of the 5th Light Infantry Regiment as the British regiments were preoccupied with the war in Europe. In desperation, the British authorities sought the assistance of the Japanese. Half of the 400 constables employed to put down the rebellion were Japanese enrolled by the Japanese Consul, and two Japanese cruisers arrived to help put down the mutiny. British resources were obviously overstretched and were not equal to the requirements of imperial defence."

whoa be careful there, lol. everyone's entitled to their opinions.
*not that I agree with them, but me is scared of flame war starting again*

Singapore is a cosmopolitan country. The people here make up the different races, religions and even perhaps different nationalities. So don't start slamming others for the sake of it. In what ways did it even offend you when they posted about commemorating the end of WWI? What right have you to say "you're not supposed to post this in here"? It's nothing offensive in the first place. I don't get why the few of you should start being so insensitive and all. It's almost like someone posting "My grand dad passed away this mornin" and you guys(hifi, edder, brundisium etc) going "haha. you're not supposed to post it in here cuz he's not related to us". Geez.

Well hifi, try posting the story on something like the Racial Riots in Singapore, in an American Forum. I dare say, it would be more likely that the majority would offer words of empathy and so on, rather than slamming your story.

haha, hey kids, when most keep quiet, it's also time to do so. We have lay it to rest and you ppl dig it out to talk some more

yes, i shut up!
