your approach towards gear

do you just buy 1 guitar that you like and don't buy anymore? everyday play on it alot and polish it wipe it clean each time after playing. treat it like your wife (one and only). or you can't help but give in to gas and need to have a few guitars?

if the utopian reality of having one guitar which exclude others does really exist, i would have treaded that path.

In my opinion, most men would want more than one of anything, if they could afford it. Be it guitars/pedals/amps or cars/electronic gadgets/even women, there's an innate propensity to want better, more and/or different. It's usually just a matter of what the costs are.

I'm stating "men" in particular, cos I believe a lot of men project their carnal desires onto their guitar spending/trading habits heh. I guess females could also not be all that different - shoes, handbags, dresses, what have you.

Of course, you cant buy too many eh? Need to maintain it.
I'd like to keep my collection at two and stop there.
I'll upgrade in the future, but I'll have to sell off one of my axe's first.

stop at two, eh? reminds me of this campaign:

less is more when come to playing the instrument, but more is still more when looking at buying gear

if not, Internet gear forums

1) be boring without all the gear pics thread(in the name of sharing, not showoff some might say)

2) wont be so entertaining without the arguement over gear

3) will have less reviews for those depending on reviews to buy gear

4) cant bring about the infiltration of booteek pedals into lime light

5) with classified ads wont be such hot thing

Hmmm.. NEVER sell/give/loan/anything your first guitar... (Or anyguitar for that matter)

I'm still looking for my lost first guitar....heh...

Just a peavey predator which I bought for like 200 bucks from Swee Lee when it was still at Yaohan Plaza Singapura....

Thing is, I used to sell a guitar so that I could get a better one... I had a Fender Strat sold it to buy my Les Paul...(Immediately regretted it..) Grew to like the Les Paul... Stopped playing for 6 years... Sold the les Paul to buy a new Fender Strat... hahaha... regret again! tried to buy the les paul back but not so nice.. oh well... then that's it.. no more selling for me.. I'll just keep it all... Now I have the strat, the les paul, the tele, and my trusty acoustic.. heh heh..

Hmmm... I'm far from stopping the gear buying... but you're right there's a limit.. I've limited myself from next year onward to 1 guitar a year.. hahaha..let's hope we stick to that.. heh.. There's just something so nice to come home to your room and see a whole rack of lovely guitars there.. Even if I don't feel like playing.. Just looking makes me feel ROCK!.. haha..

I only have 1 electric guitar now. I used to have 2 or so. 3 I think. What a waste. I never played the others as much as my #1. Watched the rest have their frets oxidise... have to clean... have to restring... wasted time since I never played them as much. So off they went. Just kept 1 guitar which has the sounds I like.

I don't really baby my #1, I just played it... if I need to hit it, I'll hit it hard and not be bothered about damaging it (not in a major way lah) because the guitar is but a tool and tools are used.

That's my take on it.

Buy when (you) need. I have one guitar now and the frets are wearing out. It costs quite a bit to refret, so I'm getting a 2nd newer one with less fretwear.

There's a lot more to life than just owning guitars and gears. Money can be placed elsewhere. I'm sure though, some people will dispute to that. Your life, your choice.

actually i very very much admire people who have only 1 axe and are very happy with it. i tried to adopt this minimalist approach to gear too. but then i realised i just have this desire to have a few. so i just try to limit my number of guitars to several, which is more realistic for me, than limiting myself to have just 1. and like a poster above said, it's nice to come home into your room to see some guitars on the rack, makes you feel rock/nice/whatever haha.

For myself, if I were to have more than 1 guitar..one has got to be a normal 6 string n the other a unique guitar...in this case, I currently have a modded Squier Standard Strat n a Danelectro 12 String semi-hollow..my Strat`s incredibly versatile n when I want something very retro, out comes the Dano 12 string for jingle jangle..;)

Sometimes, less is more...simplicity is the key. I only get guitars when I know I`ll be playing them regularly.

my pm ftw!

well for me i'm still looking at 1 single coil (eg. alder, strat) and 1 humbucker (mahagony) guitar.
i classify my music into just HEAVY and LIGHT. that almost covers anything for me already...

for other things i'll look into the amps...

it actually depends WHY u buy gears?

is it for versatility so u can play many different types of song or genre?
is it for the best sound possible?
is it for collection?
is it to imitate ur idol?
is it for investment, waiting for appreaciation?
is it for showing off?
is it for just to waste money?

for me personally, i would buy gears(guitars) to match the songs i play. like if i play something by BB King, i wouldnt want to play it on a BC Rich, would u?
so personally i like playing Slash, therefore i play a Les Paul.

much said and i only have one guitar and no pedals at all.haha

Well gears don't really make the man. Man make the gears :D lol

I got 4 guitars. But 2 electric 2 acoustic. 3 of my guitars suck and i only have 1 worthy to be called a branded guitar =.=''. It depends. If you want to play hendrix/clapton get a strat. 1 would do. But if you want to play Slash/Zeppelin etc get a lespaul. Or better still still. Get 1 of each! Get a epiphone good enough.

Point is. Don't beat around the bush. Identify the favourite genre of music and pursue it! I have read of people trying to play metal with single coil strats =.='' Sounds horrible

Stereotype. :P

Line6 FTW no?

Seriously though, I think what you said is a key point to why own so many guitars... though, I'd play everything with my HSS mahogany guitar...

Or you can just coil tap your humbucker-equipped guitar and Voila!
Humbucker aggressiveness plus single coil mojo at the flick of a switch!

Cannot leh Godspeed64... humbucker split to single coil is like... bluffing one. I don't think it becomes an authentic, real deal single coil quack... somemore if you want a good emulation of quack, you need to get humbuckers with enough windings on a coil. So I wouldn't think there is mojo there in split humbuckers...

So ah.

Die die must have another guitar. ;)

Or check out a Dimarzio Multibucker.

Or just live with it!
