would u expct 2 get paid if u were invited/asked to play a gig?

i find tt very stupid. Any genre can be played anywhere. But getting the good sound is the most important here.Well honestly i dont know where is a good place to gig nowadays. Best is to get a good ass sound man(who knows what equipments to get), an empty arena e.g warehouse etc. tts it. Abit pricey though to get your own equipments...but itll be worth it lah. Good sound, Good gig..Good night.

for me it depends on the gig

if its an invitation, then shall discuss.
my band wouldnt mind playing for free (charity gigs, frds)
we do have our fair share of good paying gigs too.

but it surely depends on ur band.
if u are a good, tight band who can entertain, then y not ask for a token.

my band is playing in malaysia but no pay.
but looking at the bright side we have:
exposure, the sun, beach, booze, hotel and chicks!

I would expect the organizers to be open about it, whether they will pay or not. Because my band, The Redemption Concept, requires much more than a rock band would since we do progressive rock. A lot more arrangement creativity required to create our originals, so we should at least get an idea of how we are to be paid if we are gonna be paid at all.

But, we're not an established band just yet, so no big payment for now. But, for performing and entertaining a crowd in a bar or something, I'd expect some payment at least. Charity shows are another thing: if they're going to give the proceeds to the SPCA or an orphanage or for a good cause, I'd expect them to pay, not to us, but to charity. I would take no payment for a charity show.

But, if we're entertaining people for the sake of entertainment, we should be paid, since we take the time to reserve the date, the transportation, etc. More so if we're using our own gear and the place only provides the sound system and the drums.

hehe, what if the people watching doesnt feel they are being entertained by the bands playing on stage and in fact greatly tormented by them. Shud the band still feel they ought to be paid for "entertaining" the audience in this way

no need audition lah, make more new friend, i help you, you help me, lets go torture the audience.

Heh, how many gigs locally each year, do you think having the budget to do proper audition?

Mostly still doing the "lets go studio record couple songs, do some decent mix, pump it up on internet and spam gig organisers, hopefully some people can take note and let them play gig"

hehe, its a friendly friend world out there, not just how much we cummed, inorder to do our music

home club is a good place for gigs! the soundman is helpful and friendly! plus the bands will be playing in a cosy and relaxing environment! oh but the place is so so cold! hahah

well correct me if im wrong but i once read Mr. Patrick Chng frm musicforgood mentioning in a newspaper article that the kids who gladly play for free wherever they are asked to are somewhat lowering the standards of payment for bands , especially for paid gigs. he mentioned something about musical and artistic integrity if i'm not wrong. that's why if u play gigs organized by musicforgood you'll find that he makes it a point for you to be paid at least a token sum, but he expects quality and polished results in return. saiful of greatspy also mentioned that aspect in one of the radiopulze nus interviews about some gig organizers wanting a quick buck out of you and even offering just packed rice as payment. if im not wrong he said something along the lines of pat as well in regards to having at least a token monetary sum unless its for charity. at the end of the day i think that if the standards are there its not a bad thing to ask for payment.

hmm.. for me no. Because even if i have a gig, it would have been my teaching paying to arranger for a gig to help his students gain experience. so i wont expect to be paid.duh.

i posted a lyric quote from Immortal Technique that hit the nail on the head but unfortunately the moderators only saw its expletives and were unable to grasp either its context or consciousness

fine.

i have never understood the logic of promoters and organizers who have bands play their shows and then expect them to walk away after that with a handshake and a pat on the back.

what amazes me even more is the fact that 'musicians' eat up with a grateful smile what comes out the organizer's arse...and then get on their knees and beg for seconds.

"its for the exposure"

"its for the love of the music"

are these promoters doing it for the "love of the music"? for the "exposure"? hell no. in fact, they are charging at the door and the fans who love the music and the bands wont get in unless they fork up cold hard cash before they can even peep at the bands

so not only do i have to buy the food, cook the food, and serve it to you, but you wont let me sit down and eat with you?

what would these promoters and organizers be without the bands?

its time for musicians to realize their worth and not whore themselves out for cheap applause and rock star wet dreams.

100% agreed.

I've only gigged twice before (school events, obviously unpaid but we got CCA points xD), but seeing what quite a number of bands here do, its quite a disgrace.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from like 60% of all gigs in here, the band themselves have to be walking advertisers, not only do they have to practice hard and perform well on the gig itself, they have to sell tickets. I didn't know bands were now considered the free alternative to SISTIC.

What's worse, for those bands who don't meet the quota of tix sold, they have to pay up for those unsold tix. WTF DUDES/DUDETTES, PAYING TO JOIN A GIG?! The only bands who should do that are those who have absolutely no playing skills at all, and always failed at auditions.

I would understand if you have to pay a "registration fee" if its some competition or something, but its just a gig...

I hope that there are less of these unscrupulous gig organisers nowadays. Disgusting.

well i can feel these organisers are gonna go on for years in the music trade in singapore.$$$ has always been the issue if you live in singapore.no $$ no life.the hidden singapore moto.how i wish i was born in US.

as a matter of principle, if the organiser is going to earn money by having you play, then definitely yes.

alot of you mention experience. but there is a difference when you play a charity/busking gig, and a profit making gig. in both cases you gain experience. but in both cases you also have a stake in the gig.

in the case of the charity gig, the money that was generated due to your participation in the event becomes your stake. that is your tangible contribution to charity. you're not gonna help orphans or old people by performing in public.

similarly, if you play a paying gig, it is only fair that whatever profit that has been generated due to your input during an event is yours. it doesnt go into some dude's pocket. people come to watch the band play, not to appreciate how nicely run the show is. so the spoils belong the people on stage as much as they do to the people behind the scenes.

yes, you get experience. but the organiser increases his rep at the same time. all these things are intangible.

there are alot of organisers out there who will compensate bands for their time and effort. but with so many people desperate to play for free, it is becoming a moral responsibility more than anything else. sooner or later, more organisers will start taking advantage of this.

even if your stake equates to just a few bucks, so be it. but free? never. don't compromise on your principles

At least get like free drinks on the house or something if they can't pay you in cash heh.

I remember last time got one Ben&Jerry's outlet allowing bands to perform, giving them free ice-cream on the house. I would gladly play for free there, free Ben&Jerry's is an act of God on its own xD.
