Why should we promote local music?

Hey guys, I'm currently doing a project on the ways to promtote local music. It would be great if u can share your thoughts on these questions:

- Why should we promote local music?

- What are some ways to promote local music

(Idol contests, music festivals eg. mosaic, 987 Home, etc)

i feel that the two most important factors in promoting local music is the support of the media (local music has to be seen and heard enough for the general public to take notice- radio, newspaper, events), and genuine interest of individuals who are willing to share with their peers and raise awareness of our local talents.

If you a singaporean don't understand why you should support your own talents, then i realise the reasons for the being of foreign talents. Not that we don't need foreign talents but just imagine your parents loves the foreign student paying rents in your house more than you yourself! Tragic..

There are endless ways to promote but who really puts them into action? All small time gig will never bring singapore music to anywhere! America and China have history of street arts long before our time! And those performing street arts are purely for self entertainment and culture! Taiwan's pop scene throw free concerts of big time celebrities instead of our autography sessions.

Though i myself is seeing the improvement of local music scene in singapore but i feel we still got a long way to go before it really takes off! And when it takes off, how long would it last? In fact we did took off before! Back when we were still kids, our chinese music scene already made their way with "Xing Yao" (a group of local chinese singers). They compose their own hits and made it to big markets all over asia. But it is only a legend now.

Singaporeans in my point of view are just narrow minded. Even if you ever did realise a cd and you approach your friends, they will smile and ask you back "how much". Price comes 1st in our mind. This cant be blamed as we live in such high expense country. Next they might ask what kinda music (knowing the price is affordable). To me if i were approach by my friend for some support i'll definately buy and say to him/her (it better be something nice!)

hmz.. shall not tok cock further on.. otherwise i might even get sued by our mm! 8O

dysFUNKtional, are you doing this for your school project or work? which institute are you from and what course are you in?

the "Why" question is a very good one.

i agree man
haha! Nahz.. i'm just expressing my point of view, but filled with info they might need here n there! :D

i think we need support from:
1) media
2) music labels
3) distributors of CDs
4) most of all ppl who listen to music

if ppl from yr own country don;t even support their locals how do expect other country to support?????

Michael learns to rock are not too hot in their homeland but here in Asia, they are frikkin million-dollar selling loh.
I'm sure there are other examples too.

I think it boils down to quality of music la, and not so much abt how many of your fellow countrymen are supporting.

so michael learns to rock and now can dance is considered a good quality export? or does it reflect the taste of the asian market? or at least our asean region?

to millions of asians, they are quality.
so....i think it's kinda hard to argue with tt. it doesnt matter whether it's considered low-grade music to critics...so long as the people like it. It's quality to them.

I would say taste of asians.

Take Baybeats for example! Why should they let only good bands expose to such experience while the not so good ones never gets to improve. Not mentioning the numbers of non-local bands gonna play.

We need someone who can actually willing to help promote your band, media coverageand stuffs...Are you gonna play hundreds of gigs before even someone even regonise ur band? Seriously ask yourself, whenever a unknown band to you plays, end of the day do you actually able to regonise the songs they play...I bet you only can remember 2 things, the people in the band or the skills.

Asia market is like that...First piroty is the revenues and wheather the community love it anot. Example your band doesnt have any X-Factor, people wont buy also. Dont forget people who buys the album are mostly those teenagers. Take those chinee boy band for example, if handsome sure get famous one.

If your band sound good, looks good have the market value, they will want to promote u.

But also, asians are still not open as the west.
