Why do we need to pay to perform nowdays???

Hi all just wondering as of lately ive been noticing a trend where organizers make the band pay to perform or make them sell tickets for the event which is handed over eventually. And some organizers dont even bother to promote the event well...

Just been pondering in my thoughts and wanna hear comments from the masses thats all no harm intended. No hard feelings...

Some -- not all, but clearly some -- organizers are preying on wannabes that want to make it big quickly. When presented with the opportunity to play a supposedly big gig, all they need to do is "sell xx number of tickets", they jump on it. Nobody even paid them any notice before... now this organizer is inviting them to perform! Finally someone understands how great they are

Of course later they realise the venue was shit, the equipment was shit, the organiser made use of them to sell tickets and didn't care about the music. It's just like modelling agencies that charge a "finder's fee" for "discovering" your talent and good looks and promise you that you'll earn many times the fee because you are so talented blah blah blah...

On the other hand there are organizers who do care. Especially those who are closely connected with the music scene. If they can work out a system to cut cost by having the bands help to sell tickets, to promote the event through word of mouth and benefit both sides (i.e. decent compensation for the bands' work), then as a musician I'd be happy to take part in such a collective effort. No different from organising your own gigs.

it aint just nowadays, it has always been the case. Anyway, theres plenty of such "pay to play" topics here round 2 to 3 years or longer, back, do check those out and see what has been said. It can be interesting.

in music, whether is it music itself, technology of making music to ways of showcasing music, theres really nothing much new, except more(and newer) people getting to know about it

because after doing their promotions for your band, and getting gigs venue owner to agree, and print out tickets etc..the rest of the money doesn't go to any charity in Singapore,it goes to their pocket.

You can always CHOOSE not to go to those organizer who make you foot the bill.

Anyway, this topic has been discussed countless times already.

The verdict is that nobody is being forced to pay; it is all up to band's preference. Just be glad that this avenue for performance is open. If you are really desperate to perform, then by all means, go ahead and pay to perform! But if you don't want to pay, then don't go to such organisers! As simple as that.

it's weird at times when your friend tells you he has a gig and fellows next with hey rmb to pass me 8 dollar for the tix

it's not weird Keith, its' damn irritating. If you really want your friend to support u why not offer to pay for the tix? Several years ago,one female vox of a certain band demanded 20 dollars from me when she pushes her band's cd in front of me saying "buy la", i was like thinking "thats the way to promote your band's cd?" LoL

as in it's awkward to reject them, i mean not saying that suck but, why resort to paying to play ? is it really that important to play infront of crowds? worst still paying to play you'll usually get crowds that are your friend's while the other crowd would prolly head off for a smoke or elsewhat lol

Y cant it be like the old times where we perform for the sake of MUSIC not for the sake of MONEY.
Miss the weekend trips at Youthpark where we can sit down and enjoy local music. I dont mind paying to go c a gig its just dat y does the performer need to pay? When you call overseas artist to spore we are the one paying them.
Alamak like this how Singapore music to grow???

Wtf are you smoking and can I have some of it?

It's not old times or new times.

Many years back, there are such organisers. Now, there are still such organisers.

Many years back, there are free gigs. Now, there are still free gigs.

My age is 46 this year.

Many years back, there are no such pay to perform organisers. Now, there are such organisers.

Many years back, there are free gigs. Now, there are very very few free gigs.

I think maybe some of you guys are not aware of what's happening for the longest time not just here but overseas too. Let's not talk about the anywhere else. How about LA, Sunset Strip? Do you guys know that Guns N' Roses were made to sell tickets to secure gigs at Troubadour in the 80s before they are became a headliner? Slash, Duff and company had to peddle the streets to make ensure turnout for their gigs and most of the time they are not even paid decently or at all. Only went they began to sellout venues then they are paid. That's how they got famous and got signed. Why will any record label be interested in a band when they can't even secure an audience. If everything is free then you can forget about any music industry of any sort to happen. I'm not associate with any of the organisers whatsoever. I'm just saying it's just that realistic.

If you think you are of the calibre of being paid to play, why are you looking for gigs, not the other way round? All want instant recognition, cannot be bothered to work hard and slog for it.

Touché. So I guess it depends on how many years back we see as "many years back".

I got a bit confused when TS said "as of lately". I guess "as of lately" could also mean "in the last 10 years", where I thought it would mean "in recent months".

Hi all as of lately i've been noticing that I my Laserdiscs can't fit into the players. How come players the hole so small? Do I need to fold the disc to put inside?

in the last few years i reckon pay to play gigs getting more and more common. organisers dun wanna take risk and yet wnna show they contribute to the scene maybe to get laid or get famous so they can get laid or treat like rockstars?

during my time bands play for free, wait wrong phrase band was invited to play, sometimes even got paid, sometimes got free beer and hot groupies to sodomize.

at times if $$$ is an issue, there will be some bands pulling resources together to organise gigs and than inivite other bands.

hey even now the band still got invited, sometimes got paid, some free beer from friends and jailbaits as well locally and overseas as well.

u dun need to pay to play....its an choice and an options

Whether its predatory or opportunistic, think at the end of the day, the musicians decide.

It's business, it's demand & supply I guess.
