Steve Vai for me..

People can copy his playing but hell, the amount of emotion that goes into his playing, is on a whole different level! I've yet to come across anyone with that much feel while playing something that is not only technical, but instantly recognisable as Vai.

i second Becker too and also Steve Morse with his incredible alternate picking technique which can even handle 1 note per string at 192bpm

He did have 9 strings at one point of time before he auctioned it off on ebay though. Some guy on the www.sevenstring.org forum bought it.
