So which is more important havin an okay guitar superb amp, or superb guitar ok amp????

It really depends on your needs.

If you jam/gig, do you bring guitar or amp to your jam/gig place?
If only play strictly at home, I personally will go for superb amp rather than superb guitar.

The amp is the final tone bender in the chain. It will affect whatever you put into it. It should be obvious enough by now.

It's extremely hard to make a good tube amp sound bad. You can put any pedal into it, but crank up the volume, let the tubes work and it will sweeten anything.

I would say it's like painting. Your pedals are the base coats, they help bring out the final coat that is the amp, into different shades.

I suppose you were addressing my post to Ian's and I don't disagree with you on the tone.

Hmm using the tube amp with totally clean headroom and letting the pedals do all the work is really an underusage of the amp.

IMO we usually set our amps to almost saturate. Any dirt pedal would push it slightly or very much over into saturation zone.

Randolf teaches the trick where, if i remember correctly, if you have to use a solid state amp, you use the amp's onboard overdrive to try and set it similarily, to almost saturate, then use pedals to colour.

Wow that was a long sentence.

.....at gigs all you see is the sound guy pushing the guitar player of the stage !!

When are they gonna learn :?

Thats correct... supposed to be "the way" so to speak, to get a "tube-like" feel. Even on solid state, and that SS that Randolf spoke abt in question was the Jazz Chorus, with the built in Boss OD1 circuitry.

But somehow, I can't do that... i find tube amps grainy, and i dislike their overdriven tones a lot... i'm just weird lah.

My Goblin is clean, dead clean, then i use my pedals. Wacked huh.

I particularly HATE regular(not those emulators kind) solid state amp overdrive/distortion/whatever you call it.

As long as the button is depressed, switch is flipped, I have bees flying out from my speaker cones.

Unless if its nicely designed solid state amp drive, I don't think I'll ever touch that "drive" button.

Oh did I mentioned that those solid state studded ice pick warriors are from a manufacturer who's name starts with P and ends with a Y??????

pedals as in, all distortion comes from the pedals, nothing pushing the amp.

As in using the amp's non-OD mode and using a distortion pedal to get the distortion?

PEAVEYYYYYYY.... Well.. I find the peavey XXL really a good solid-state amp. Solid onboard drive. Tubey sounding also. Some of the solid state Randalls kicks major ass also. Their onboard gain sounds way better than some of the pedals out there..

I like Tech21's Trademark 10 amp... does it count as an emulator type? :P

anyway.... solid state need ventilation holes like this meh?

Play loud ...through your dads PA !! :D

Oh yes i was fooled twice by those Randalls...nice amps !!

So...We are talkin abt diff worlds colliding here ..
1.being the type that enjoys overdriven tube straight up and spices it with a boost type pedal and maybe a delay pedal the most...plays a lot ...loves anything vintage. Usually one amp type...the most two ....

2.Then we have pedal freak who is confused as he has too many knobs to tweak! But enjoys an amp that is friendly with his arsenal of pedals !! Too occupied for choice of amp types usually...so just plugs and play as long as he is heard loud and clear !!

3. And we got the type called "Hi Fi Buff"... fascinated by the way a cd player loads :D ...this type talks too much abt all kinda mojo that he reads on the net and usually doesn't really play much guitar...buys alot of gear ...good to be friend with too...easy to con as long your hit the right buttons !! His amp will have silver and gold in the circuitry and alien power supply!!

Which one are you ??

I'll invent a new mod for all XXL users.

I'll install some custom modified tubes with orange leds shining from the bottom!!

it all depends on ur standards man...
how it sounds to u...
if u want to find those thumpy sounds.. it depends rather on ur amp.
for distortion wise... concentrate on pick-ups. it depends on pick-ups if u want an awesome distorted sound.to me ah.but sumtimes once ur guitar is modified, u might need to chnge ur amp.
for example.u chnged ur pickup.sounds more heavy.ur amp is 10 watts. u might get feedback. solution.get a bigger amp. 20 watts best.

but i am juz abit worried coz i dunno if upgradin 2 a bigger watt amp is rite decision.. as i am a neighbour 2 a stroke patient and i tink playin loud is out of da question..... so wat do u guys tink... (wat i use now is Vox AD15VT wif Epi LP)......

well, regarding the 1st post...

basically, here in SG, buy the guitar 1st... guitar comes 1st, effects 2nd and amp 3rd...

reason being, when u perform here or do gigs, basically, u're gonna use those amps provided there... when u're jamming in a jamming studio with ur band mates, u're gonna be using those amps there...

so unless u're doing home recording, or u've got transport or means to lug ur >20kg amp+cab around for performances, guitar and efx comes 1st...

this however, is not saying that u totally neglect the type of amp u buy for home practise... not-so-good amps make elite guitars sound, well, not-so-good... if u're going to bear with that crap sound everyday at home when u practise.. chances are, u'll get frustrated and won't be able to have inspiration/ideas/motivation to practise... which will make u a not-so-good guitarist...

so, get a decent amp, and get a good guitar, and save up for essential effects... u'll only be bringing ur efx and guitars with u when performing. but if u're rich, u should just get everything... help people running guitar business in sg survive...
