What's happening to the world?

Well so, the story goes like this. I saw a fellow softie, I shall not name, happen to have a sale on boutique pedals and I was quite interested in the Barber Tone Press that he had for sale. The sale went well, didn't really get it for a really good price, but hey! always trust softies. In excellent physical condition, I plugged the Tone Press in to try. That's weird... it's not compressing anything or sustaining anything, it's just giving me a distorted sound. I ask the softie, hey did you do anything to it? "no" he says. So I brought it to a tech, TYMC. They troubleshooted directly through barber, but to no avail. I asked whether i could send it to Barber directly, they told me that he won't accept it, he only offers a one to one exchange if the pedal is under warranty. I go back and ask the softie, hey there is really something funky with the pedal, can you take it back because I can't do anything to it, it's just a very weak and expensive overdrive. He says "no. I don't need one. Can you sell it by yourself? thanks"

This really taught me a lesson in ever buying second handed goods.. never judge a book by it's cover. Thanks to TYMC to doing whatever they can anyway. Really nice place. To the mother loving son of a father who sold me this expensive paper weight, I hope you don't con anyone else. I'm freakin pissed now because I can't do anything with the pedal and there's nobody who can repair it. Thank you for making the world a better place.

If you don't tell who it is... then... how to avoid such things from happening if the bad man chooses to keep quiet about this?

oh anyway, if the tone press is using a ca3080 ota, i got spare and can give you 1. Those 3080 has long been discontinued and hard to find in the market. If not, maybe can try a lm 13700 and see if its interchangable(i can spare you 1 of this as well)

if you can find anyone to take a look at the pedal, i will give you this chip to pass to whoever is checking out the pedal.

that guy aint no gentleman. but what perplex me is nowadays when u sell or buy guitars or pedals or even portable amps in soft most will ask to meet at certain location to seal the deal. no testing done. thats fine if the goods are not faulty. what happens if the goods are intermittent faulty or on the verge of breakin down (though no fault of the seller - maybe during transportation, etc). this will definitely create misunderstanding. so what im saying is isnt it better to test and check it out before buying and for sellers to allow testing before goods changed hands

i think most of the time, testing is alittle hard to do. Esp when both stays at both end of the island, the best is meet in town right? But i do feel that it is right for all that is selling anything on forum to give a money back guarantee if it's faulty on the first day or something.. but again.. no matter what plan we can invent, it all base on honesty.

hope he will read your post and realize he is still a human being and believes on karma and eventually felt guilty and gives you a good call with nice solutions!

come on.. best John Mayer voice..

*thats why we're waitin' ((waitinnnnn)) waitin on the world to change....* :D

well, for sure, that guy's reply sure wasn't very nice. seems like he knew something would be wrong or is already wrong. and its only gonna be a matter of time till u contact him bout it.

anyways,
if u guys are users of 'brotherhood of the box' (BOB) forum, u will see a sticky thread called 'bad traders list'. if one forum user goes through a bad deal (seller/buyer no show, seller selling spoilt items then going m.i.a, and what not), they contact the administrator, and the bad seller's username and phone number gets posted up under the bad traders list. to remove it, the fella himself gotta explain the reason for the bad deal and how it has been concluded to get his name off the list. though a bit extreme, as soft is very friendly forum, but maybe it can implemented here, to keep the bad traders at bay?

all in all, there has to be an element of trust. i've bought things from bros here in soft, and glad to say all deals were smooth. there will however be one or two black sheep who will "spoil market" and break this element of trust.

to the threadstarter, i hope u can resolve your case quick. :D
to all softies, what u guys think bout the suggestion i made above? bout the 'bad traders list'? :D

what you can do before buying a pedal is to bring a patch cable and a 9v battery so that you can test whether the pedal could be powered up or not. well, thats the only thing you can. whether the pedal is spoilt or the pots are cracky no one can tell unless being fed thru an amp.

I guess we can try use the search function and guess who's been selling the barber tone press lately.

your thread title's a tad bit of an overreaction though. terrorism and widespread natural disasters are happening to the world, not spoilt barber tone presses. still, you should post the name of the trader, to prevent future buyers from being conned.
