What is a good HSS Combi?

Well, we've seen many recommendations for SSS or HSH combis. What is your favourite HSS combi??

And how do you deal with the volume drop between double coil position to single coil?

Thanks!!

You can have even volume when switching from the humbucker to the singles. Its dependent on the output of the pickups. Match them well, no volume issues.

But even if even volume is achieved, there will be a difference - the humbucker usually sounds fatter, thicker, and the singles will be thinner sounding.

So far, my favourite setup is a low output 8.4k Alnico 2 bridge humbucker (HighOrder Pickups) and 2 Bill Lawrence L200 single coils. All hum-canceling. This setup is excellent for bluesy playing all the way to hard rock. Little compression so excellent dynamics and the cleans shine very nicely. Not the best choice if one likes to do metal or needs a certain amount of compression.

Yo Shawn, I like those that come stock on the Tylers. :) TylerJTS2500/Tyler2500/Tyler-Duncan Trembucker for mine. (yes, I'm telling you to just go for the Tyler you've been thinking about...) Took some pickup height adjustment to get the stratty vibe I was looking for on the neck and mid pups, but well worth the journey. Agree w shreddy's recomm to try to do some matching of the pup outputs, though that isn't a 100% guarantee that they'll sound good together. Don't underestimate the effect of playing with those pup heights!

8.4k you call low ah? I was thinking of sub-7ks... Heheh... Then again it's for the bridge, so ya. 8.4k about right... Haven't had the pleasure of trying A2s in depth. Played briefly with them before. my current set of A4s are the new love.;)

Eh, the winding doesn't mean the pup is necessarily low output. I can have a high powered ceremic humbucker wound to 8k and it will be awfully bright.

I've tried 7.8k A5 for the bridge... its... bright.

but but but... bright = nice!!!! Actually, isn't it the case, the lower the winds, the lower the DC resistance, the brighter the tone?

Well, too bright = not nice?

Yeah, I think that's how the DC Resistance works... but... DC resistance also plays a part in parallel wiring stuff right?

Of course. If I remember my electrinics correctly, the total DC resistance of 2 parallel coils is less than the sum of both individual coils. ASSUMING both individual coils have the same DC resistance. Then again, that's more than 10 years ago liao...

P.S. Can a humbucker get too bright?

Like his ^

Btw in other words..."A series is when two coils are connected in series end to end. The total sum of their DC resistance is added together. " ;)

I have a set of suhr SSV/ FL / FL waitting to be install in my strat..
just waitting for the blardy HSS pickguard to arrive... taking forever...
hope they sound good!!

The single Suhr's are nice ...phat and not too bright...my fav and lots me friends have em loaded too.
As for the hums .... i donno ChanMin ...acquired taste lah!

yeap... Suhr combi mentioned above is nice...

for me I prefer, LindyFralin VH (neck, middle) and LindyFralin PAF (bridge).
or Suhr V60LP (neck, mid) and Suhr SSV (bridge)... :)

yea the V60LPs are my favourite ... i have them on my main strat..

but the FLs arent as phat ... more chimey.. would sit in better with a bridge humbucker i feel.
Especially because i hate the FL bridge single coil...

A thinner, brighter single coil sits better with a humbucker? That's an interesting notion... I thought that would result in more contrast.

for me yeap, a bit contrast. especially the Fralin Vh mixed with Fralin PAF, but the contrasty will not that far, coz the Fralin Paf still has a vintage feel (low output for Humb size). Same way works with SUHR config. :)
