What if your originals sounds like MUSE etc? Will you lose the originality?

Hi my fellow softies

I am just curious what if your originals sounds like the band u influence with most in my case its muse... Will I lose the originality of my songs if it were to sound like muse? I tried to create my own style of playing and my own sounds of the melody but somehw i felt it still sounds like muse (like epic melody). some of my friends said that I might lose the originality of the songs I create and some said even guitar players steal each others solo/rhythm so why not give it a shot. So confusing. Need your feedback pls.. Thnk you. cheers!

Why do you care? Just keep writing.

because it would suck if you thought you were being original, hawked your songs as original, and faced a harsh backlash from your audience for being a copycat.

That's all part and parcel of being a musician. It's no easy road. The faster someone learns that, the less things there are to stop you from creating music, and the more time you have to write songs that will eventually be artistic work to be proud of, and to be appreciated by others. Don't waste time worrying on things like originality; don't even expect to hit the core of "originality"-- that will come in time and experience. And it won't come if you let ruminations like these hold you back.

exactly, sometimes I feel that we lose ourselves through ppl words and 4get the most important thing, to play music as it is, not caring its influenced by blues, rock pop or wadever, the key is to keep playing music. It is like being human, you lose yourself to money and stuff that you forget the most important thing's to be a human being and care for each other. If ure to to be scared of being influence by this and that, youre thinking too much and it is stopping your process like interruption, the thing is to let things be the way it is, just play music, anythine else forget, no stereotype, no this or that. They key's to just play music, but seriously how many ppl can do that. (me excluded)

theres a phrase (by johnny walker i think), keep walking, it is simple yet profound, think abt it.

Indeed. So it seems we are deviating from the main topic, which is fine. Yes, we shouldn't worry too much about these - as players. There is pure joy in simply playing for the love of playing. And it should be that way! However, for composers, it's a different matter. The joy is actually creating something different and original. All that for the love of composition!

So...the goals of a player and a composer/song writer are quite different.

heh, if the original poster doesnt care and kept on doing his way, then there wouldnt be this thread.

anyway, i really wonder what happen to the poster, if you are reading this, come in and settle what you have started and at the same time, lets hear some thoughts from you, after we have shared ours.

Hey there...

i am really thankful for all your comments. I am quite busy lately haha so sorry for the late reply. somehw i agreed totally on Pathinrain.... i love this sentence from him 'at some point, will emulate what we like from our idol. The different and most crucial thing which will/might make us stand out, can be'.... :-D i tried playing my so called original to some of my friends and they said "hey u sound like muse, u noe u might lose your originality there bla bla bla" and after reading some of my fellow softies feedbacks.... WHY DO I CARE!!! its my creation and doesnt matter where it comes frm as long as it comes straight from my heart... wah drama seh hahaha. Musician road is very humpy and it is not easy. I jus need to face the critics etc.

great post patinrain bro

How do you cheat the system, can you come up with an extra note, or an organ which never invented before, or a 'new music theory'

Its true we steal stuff, but if ure brave and honest enugh to put an "I" in ur interpretation, audience will know. Don jus listen to muse, listen to everything, a lot of ppl says they listen everything, but really they dont. Be diverse and versatile.

@bobby: haha u ass*** (me am one too), but really tts not needed, i think its a very very good thread.

Hey thanks for defending this thread haha... but its tru as wat you said be diverse and versatile. I just need to be brave and honest to myself.. something like i need a knock on my head to make me realise that doing something unique is based on the individual himself not the audience. Even weird songs are kinda famous nowadays so i see why shouldnt I try it.. who noes my luck is there... haha thanks again

hey i love your first reply..."why do u care. just keep writing"... I TOTALY AGREED ON THAT.... WHY MUST I CARE!! YEAH!!! Tats a boost up in my confidence hahaha

Yeah love for composition of your own creation is the most important thing that shld be inherited in musician life. All this are dependent on each individual who willings to give everything he have for the passion of music and i thank you for the comment. Cheers!

Thank you!

Thank you guys so much for your honest opinions/ thoughts regardless of whther the reply is rude, good or watever.. it still makes sense and u guys somehw boost up my confidence... well its self-passion that counts. Maybe i ll do some recordings of my original and let u guys listen and comments but not now la haha it will be soon haha:rolleyes: however, i will adhere all of your advice and turn it to a stepping stone (dnk whther the sentence is right). I will listen to more music from diff genre. I will keep upgrading and upgrading in music and falling back is a normal thing for musician therefore i wont give up. I really appreciate your time for this thread and who noes i might turn from 'caterpillar to a butterfly' hahaha Once again, thank you guys very very much. Feel free to post more opinions of urs and lets share it together. Cheers!

It's your influences that makes you stand out. The mixture of different music you listen to that makes your writing what's you.

i agree... everybody has to start somewhere... although i try to create my original lines, i tend to take most of my ideas from here and there and mix it together with my style... so to hell with what ppl thinks... if u like it, go with it=) ok... haha

heh, it can be quite strange to hear that if iam a musician(which iam not by the way) and i want people to listen to me, sell albums, people come to my gig etc and and so on,

to totally ignore what others are saying and just indulge in my own world and hope people will accept me for what i did.

hehe, anyway, to threadstarter, put yourself in the shoe of the audience, the listening ones. Would you settle for a 2nd rate ______ copy band(fill in the blank with favourite band) in your country which might sound as good as the real band(foreign band) or rather watch/listen to the original band which you like?

we make music as well as listen to others. Theres no way to totally ignore things. Hehe. Last thing we want to be, is to be holed up thinking that what we can come up with, rock our own sock off, only...

Are you really sure you're not a musician haha u r like an expert to me. Ha-ha...

Dear poster,

Hey there, I just wanted to ask you. If I create a bread spread that is brown, feels like peanut butter, tastes like peanut butter, smells like peanut butter, and OH, I also used peanuts to make it, does it mean I am copying peanut butter?

No, it means I am just an original imitator of peanut butter!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I ROX!!!!!

wrong. it means you made peanut butter. if it looks like shit, tastes like shit, smells like shit. it IS shit. no 2 ways about it.
