Yo guys, please share your experience about getting cheated, or nearly getting cheated, and how to avoid them here!

Together we can put these low-integrity people out of business!

I nearly bought a certain zildjian cymbal (endorsed and developed by vinnie colaiuta) which was cracked. the guy told me it's about 1 inch long, and "doesn't affect the tone at all", and it "never gave (him) problems". It was about 60% of the original price so i was really quite keen on it.

But after checking with my drum teacher, he told me cracks can PROPAGATE and one day it'll be just left with the dome, and maybe your very own zildjian ozone cymbal(how do you mount it?). To solve it you'll have to drill two holes at 2 ends of the crack.

SO here's the story. When I met the guy, I put on my blur-cock face(which wasn't too difficult), he showed me the cracked cymbal, and told me it doesn't affect the tone yada yada yada... THEN, I told him i heard that the crack propagates. SO he said "errrmm.. ya.. to a certain extent.." and took out another identical cymbal just without the crack, and sold it to me for another $40 more.

All thanks to my teacher, if not i would have been conned.

NB: i saw this guy selling the cymbal still so do think for yourself!

hey yo dude. cheers for sharing ur experience...

for cymbals, it's really easy to check for any faults to it....

1) check the center mounting hole is in perfect con, ie; no cracks around, no keyholes, dents.

2) check for any cymbal dents by placing it at a flat surface - ground of flat char and tap the edge... any uneveness is detected here.. (doesn't work with non true flat surface so sometimes a naked eye check will do.

3) run your finger on the edge slowly and see if there's any deep/minor chips. minor ones are ok but those major ones needs to be reconciled.

4) finally, hearing the tone. hold the cymbal with ur index on the middle, slightly tap it and let it ring and put it to ur ear.. it should have a clear low tone and no buzzing or whatever funny noises.

so bro, which zildjian did u get and how come he got an extra piece which's in perfect cond????

regards

If ther Seller, stipulate it very clearly " That the Cymbal is Cracked" - that's not being misleading or any misconception given to Buyer.

Of course as a Seller they will try to sell their product (at the Best Highest Prices) and they will say(No Problem All This Is Small Matters).

However, as a Buyer - we must be careful, know the product well - or else of course we will regret at end of the day.

I can understand the situation here - and the Thread-Starter has brought up a good point here - BUT I strongly believed that as Consumer/Buyer becomes so much more discerning nowadays and with all the Info available here at Soft's Forum Drum Section and especially so if you are a Member of Soft's Drum Xchange Singapore - Who can or dare to snook you - wait kenna chailat chailat - Reputation down the drain straight-away... Just call up any Brother/Sis (if you know them personally I am sure they will give you the best advice).

Here within Soft - Fraudulent Practices are negligible - but true - like the Slogan says "Low Crime Doesn't Means No Crime" - Hehehehehe..

yo guys I got the 16inch a custom fast crash in the end. I dunno why he's got an extra piece though.

anyway then i exchanged for a 17" a custom crash with my friend. sweet man. I can just sit there for minutes watching how it moves and vibrates and listen to the warm overtones. hahaha

thanks for the tips!
